Amused

Chapter 5: The Man Behind My Husband

Arthur Reed walked toward the group with the slow confidence of a man who believed the world still owed him something.

His polished cane tapped against the wooden dock.

Vanessa followed several steps behind him.

She no longer looked smug.

Her face was pale, and her hands were shaking.

Michael stared at Arthur.

"What are you doing here?""

Arthur ignored him.

He approached Danielle.

"William's daughter.""

Danielle held Olivia closer.

"Mr. Reed.""

Arthur smiled.

"You look like your father.""

"I've been told that.""

"He was a stubborn man.""

"So I've heard.""

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"He also made some enemies.""

Danielle glanced at Richard.

"Why are you here?""

Arthur looked at the three men in suits.

"Because I received an interesting phone call this morning.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"From whom?""

"Someone who told me that the Carter family was about to become very uncomfortable.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Arthur, this is a private corporate matter.""

Arthur finally looked at him.

"Private? Michael, you have spent years using my company's money to finance your lifestyle. I think I've earned the right to be interested.""

Vanessa froze.

"Your company?""

Arthur nodded.

"Did he not tell you?""

She looked at Michael.

He said nothing.

Arthur turned toward Danielle.

"Perhaps you should know that Reed Strategic Consulting was originally established by my family.""

Danielle's stomach tightened.

"Your son founded it?""

"My son, Daniel. He died seven years ago.""

"I'm sorry.""

Arthur waved away the sympathy.

"Vanessa inherited some of his business interests. Unfortunately, she also inherited his debts.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's not true.""

Arthur looked at her.

"Would you like me to explain the transfers?""

She lowered her eyes.

Michael intervened.

"Don't drag her into this.""

Arthur laughed.

"You're worried about Vanessa now?""

"She has nothing to do with my company.""

"Really?""

Arthur opened a leather folder.

He removed several photographs.

The first showed Michael and Vanessa entering a private apartment building.

The second showed them meeting a man outside a bank.

The third showed a warehouse in Ohio.

Danielle recognized the building.

It belonged to a subsidiary of Carter Maritime.

Arthur placed the photographs on the table.

"That warehouse was sold to a company called Northbridge Logistics for a fraction of its market value. Two weeks later, Northbridge sold it to another buyer for nearly three times the price.""

Richard examined the documents.

"Who was the buyer?""

Arthur smiled.

"A company registered in the Cayman Islands.""

Thomas Reed looked at the paperwork.

"Who owns it?""

Arthur tapped the final page.

"That's the interesting part.""

Danielle leaned forward.

The company was owned by a trust.

A private trust established under the name of a deceased man.

Her father's name.

William Hayes.

Danielle looked up sharply.

"That isn't possible.""

Arthur nodded.

"That's what I thought.""

Richard took the document from Thomas.

"This trust was never listed in the original investment structure.""

"No," Arthur replied.

"Because it wasn't created by William.""

He pointed at a signature.

"It was created using a forged authorization.""

Danielle felt the blood drain from her face.

"Whose authorization?""

Arthur looked directly at Michael.

"Your husband's.""

Michael laughed nervously.

"This is nonsense.""

Arthur turned to Vanessa.

"Would you like to explain the bank account?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

"Arthur, please.""

"Tell them.""

She shook her head.

Michael stepped toward her.

"Don't say anything.""

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

"Stop telling me what to do!""

Everyone went silent.

She looked at Danielle.

"I didn't know what he was doing at first.""

Michael stared at her.

"Vanessa.""

"I thought it was legitimate consulting work. He told me the company needed a separate financial vehicle to manage overseas contracts.""

Danielle listened carefully.

"Then what changed?""

Vanessa looked down.

"About eight months ago, Michael told me he needed to move money before the company underwent a restructuring.""

"How much?""

"I don't know exactly.""

"Try.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"More than two million dollars.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"That money came from Carter Maritime?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Michael stepped forward.

"She's lying.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You told me Danielle was going to sign the documents.""

"She was supposed to.""

"She never did!""

Michael grabbed her arm.

She pulled away.

"You said her father had already approved the arrangement!""

Arthur laughed bitterly.

"William Hayes had been dead for almost three years.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I know that now.""

Danielle stared at her.

"How long have you known Michael?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Four years.""

The answer landed heavily.

Four years.

Danielle's mind raced.

Four years meant the affair had started barely a year after her wedding.

"Did you know he was married when you met him?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know he wanted my inheritance?""

Vanessa looked toward Michael.

"I knew he wanted access to certain investments.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

Danielle felt a strange calm settle over her.

The affair had hurt.

The lies had hurt.

But knowing that Michael had chosen her not simply because he loved her, but because of what her father owned, changed something fundamental.

"Why?"" Danielle asked.

Vanessa looked confused.

"Why what?""

"Why would you help him?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she answered honestly.

"Because he promised me a future.""

Danielle almost smiled.

"So did he.""

Vanessa looked away.

Arthur tapped his cane.

"Enough sentimental conversation. We have a more immediate problem.""

Richard turned toward him.

"What problem?""

Arthur removed a final document.

"Northbridge Logistics has submitted a claim against the Carter Family Trust.""

Thomas took the document.

His eyes moved across the first page.

"On what grounds?""

"An alleged loan agreement.""

Danielle stared.

"What loan agreement?""

Arthur pointed to the signature.

"Your father's signature.""

Danielle felt her knees weaken.

"That's impossible.""

Richard examined it.

"This is a forgery.""

Arthur nodded.

"Probably. But it was submitted to a court in Delaware three weeks ago.""

Danielle looked at Michael.

He was staring at the document.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

She noticed.

"Michael?""

He didn't respond.

"Have you seen this before?""

"No.""

"Look at me.""

He raised his eyes.

For the first time, Danielle saw something in them that went beyond fear of losing money.

He was terrified of something else.

Something connected to that document.

Arthur noticed it too.

"Michael, perhaps you should tell them.""

Michael's voice was strained.

"There's nothing to tell.""

Arthur leaned on his cane.

"Then perhaps I should.""

He explained that Northbridge Logistics had been established to purchase distressed shipping assets.

The company had initially been funded by several private investors.

One of those investors had been Arthur's late son.

After his death, the company had been restructured.

Vanessa inherited part of the interest.

But someone had recently used a forged document to claim that the company was owed a substantial debt by the Hayes Family Trust.

If successful, the claim would give Northbridge a legal basis to seize certain assets.

"How much?"" Danielle asked.

Arthur looked at her.

"Twenty-eight million dollars.""

Danielle felt Olivia move in her arms.

Twenty-eight million.

Her father's money.

Her daughter's inheritance.

Michael had not simply been having an affair.

He had been attempting to construct an entire financial scheme around her family.

Richard looked at Michael.

"Did you authorize this filing?""

Michael shook his head.

"No.""

Thomas studied the document.

"Then why does it contain your electronic approval?""

Michael went completely still.

Danielle looked at him.

"Michael?""

He swallowed.

"I didn't know they were going to file it.""

Arthur smiled coldly.

"Interesting choice of words.""

Michael turned on him.

"You're the one who brought me into this!""

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Be careful.""

"You said it was legitimate!""

"Lower your voice.""

"You told me William had already agreed to the arrangement before he died!""

Danielle felt as though the floor had disappeared.

Michael had just admitted something.

Arthur looked toward Richard.

"I think we've heard enough.""

Thomas closed the folder.

"That statement will be recorded in our report.""

Michael realized what he had said.

He looked at Danielle.

"That's not what I meant.""

She didn't answer.

A security officer approached Richard and whispered something.

Richard's expression changed.

"What do you mean the documents have been served?""

The officer handed him a sealed envelope.

Richard opened it.

His eyes moved quickly across the pages.

Then he looked at Danielle.

"Mrs. Carter, there's an emergency hearing scheduled for tomorrow morning.""

"About what?""

"The disputed trust assets.""

"Who filed it?""

Richard turned the first page toward her.

The claimant's name was clearly printed.

Northbridge Logistics.

But beneath it was another name.

The authorized representative.

Michael Carter.

Danielle stared at the page.

Then she looked at her husband.

"You told me you hadn't seen this.""

Michael's face was pale.

"I didn't file it.""

Thomas pointed to the electronic certification.

"Your authorization was submitted through your company's legal account.""

Michael shook his head.

"Someone used my credentials.""

Arthur laughed.

"Now you understand how it feels.""

Danielle turned toward him.

"What do you mean?""

Arthur's expression became serious.

"Because someone used my credentials, too.""

He opened his folder again.

And produced a second document.

This one contained a signature from Danielle's father.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

The note was dated just four days before William Hayes died.

Danielle read it.

Her father's handwriting was unmistakable.

If Michael Carter ever attempts to claim these assets, contact my daughter immediately. She must never be allowed to sign the settlement agreement.

Danielle looked up.

"Settlement agreement?""

Richard's expression changed.

"There's a settlement agreement?""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

Arthur looked toward Michael.

"Ask your husband.""

May you like

Michael took a step backward.

And for the first time, he seemed ready to run.
