Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Left Behind
The message stayed on my screen.
*Because your father was the one who created the file.*
I read it once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
But my mind refused to accept it.
My father.
Not Daniel.
Not Rebecca.
Not some stranger from Daniel’s past.
My father.
The man who had taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who held my hand through every childhood fear.
The man whose old jacket I still kept in the back of my closet because it smelled like him.
My father.
Emily turned on her phone flashlight.
“Tara?””
I didn’t answer.
“Tara, look at me.””
I finally looked up.
“My father?””
She saw my face.
And her expression changed.
Not because she believed the message.
Because she understood what it meant.
Someone had found the one thing they knew would break me.
“Maybe it’s a lie,” she said.
I looked at the screen.
“Everyone says that.””
“What?””
“Every time we find something, someone says we don’t know the whole story.””
I swallowed.
“But somehow, every story leads to another secret.””
Emily sat beside me.
“Then we find the truth.””
The simple certainty in her voice helped.
Because I was exhausted.
Exhausted from being confused.
Exhausted from wondering who was lying.
Exhausted from loving someone who had turned my life into a mystery.
I looked back at the video.
The screen had stopped when the power went out.
Daniel’s face was frozen.
For the first time, I noticed something.
He looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Not calm.
Afraid.
The power returned twenty minutes later.
The knocking never happened again.
Whoever had been outside was gone.
But the message remained.
We needed answers.
So we watched the video again.
This time, we paid attention to everything.
Daniel appeared on screen, sitting in the same dark room.
His voice was quieter.
“If you’re watching this, then you’ve probably already found the notebook.””
A pause.
“You’re probably angry.””
I almost laughed.
That was an understatement.
“I understand.””
The video continued.
“I would be angry too.””
He looked down.
“I spent years convincing myself that what I was doing was necessary.””
His eyes lifted.
“But necessary doesn’t mean right.””
I felt something twist inside me.
Because that sounded like the first honest thing he had ever said.
“My assignment was simple.””
A document appeared beside him.
A photograph.
My photograph.
“Find Tara Collins.””
I stared.
There it was.
My name.
Official.
Recorded.
Tracked.
“Learn what she knows.””
The words appeared on screen.
“Find the file.””
My hands became cold.
Daniel continued.
“They told me Tara was dangerous because her father had hidden something before he died.””
I froze.
Before he died.
My father had been gone for eight years.
A heart attack.
That was what everyone told me.
That was what I believed.
But suddenly, even that memory felt uncertain.
“They said her father stole information from them.””
The video showed another image.
A man.
Older.
Standing beside a group of people in an office.
My father.
I covered my mouth.
Emily whispered:
“Oh my God.””
I stared at the screen.
My father looked younger.
Healthy.
Alive.
And beside him stood Daniel.
But not the Daniel I knew.
The younger Daniel.
The one from years before.
The video continued.
“I found Tara because of her father.””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“But I stayed because of Tara.””
A painful silence filled the room.
“I was supposed to get close to her.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
“I was supposed to earn her trust.””
He looked away.
“I never expected to actually care about her.””
I closed my eyes.
I hated that part of me still wanted to believe him.
Still wanted those words to matter.
“I looked for the file for months.””
Daniel continued.
“But I never found it.””
The screen changed.
A map appeared.
Locations.
The same locations from the notebook.
“Because Tara’s father was smarter than all of us.””
My heart stopped.
“He never hid the file.””
Emily leaned closer.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“He hid the reason everyone wanted it.””
The video flickered.
Then:
“And he hid it somewhere nobody would ever think to look.””
The screen went black.
A loading symbol appeared.
Then another video began.
But this one wasn’t Daniel.
It was my father.
I couldn’t breathe.
My father sat in front of the camera.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably him.
My hands covered my mouth.
“Dad…”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
He looked into the camera.
“If you’re seeing this, then something happened to me.””
My eyes filled instantly.
His voice.
After all these years.
His actual voice.
“I wish I could have told you everything.””
He paused.
“But I made a promise to protect you.””
I wiped my face.
“Protect me from what?””
The video continued.
“When I discovered what they were doing, I thought exposing them would be enough.””
A document appeared.
Names.
Companies.
Financial records.
“I was wrong.””
My father looked exhausted.
“They don’t fear people knowing their secrets.””
He leaned closer.
“They fear people knowing why they keep secrets.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily whispered:
“Keep watching.””
My father continued.
“The file was never about one person.””
The screen showed hundreds of names.
“This was a system.””
I stared.
A system.
“People with power created new identities for themselves. They erased histories. Changed records. Manipulated people.””
My heart sank.
Like Daniel.
“Daniel was one of them.””
I froze.
The words hurt.
Even though I knew.
But hearing my father say his name made it real.
“He was young when they found him.””
The video showed Daniel again.
“He was taught how to become whoever people needed him to be.””
A pause.
“But he wasn’t beyond saving.””
I looked at the screen.
My father believed that.
Even after everything.
“Then Tara entered his life.””
The video showed a picture.
Me.
A photo from years ago.
Before I met Daniel.
I didn’t recognize it.
“I knew they would eventually find her.””
My father looked directly at the camera.
“So I made the hardest decision of my life.””
The screen went dark.
Then one sentence appeared.
*I erased Tara’s memory of the file.*
I stared.
“What?””
Emily looked confused.
“Her memory?””
The video continued.
My father’s voice returned.
“Not her actual memories.””
I exhaled.
“Then what?””
“The connection.””
A photograph appeared.
My father and me.
Standing in front of a house.
“I knew Tara had seen something as a child.””
I froze.
A child?
“What?””
My father continued.
“The file was hidden in a place only Tara would ever return to.””
My heart began racing.
“What place?””
The answer appeared.
A location.
An address.
My childhood home.
The house my father sold after he died.
The house I hadn’t visited in years.
“The file was never hidden from Tara.””
My father’s voice became softer.
“It was hidden for Tara.””
The video ended.
Neither of us spoke.
The silence afterward felt heavier than anything before.
Finally, Emily said:
“You have to go there.””
I looked at the address.
My old home.
The place where my childhood ended.
The place where my father’s secrets began.
“I don’t know if I can.””
Emily looked at me.
“Tara.””
“What if everything changes?””
She held my hand.
“Everything already changed.””
She was right.
There was no going back.
Not to Chris.
Not to Daniel.
Not to the life I thought I had.
I grabbed my jacket.
Before we left, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
This time, only one sentence.
*I know where you’re going.*
My blood ran cold.
Another message followed.
*Please don’t go there without me.*
I stared.
After everything.
After every lie.
After every secret.
I should have ignored him.
But then the final message appeared.
*Because the person who killed your father is waiting there.*
I looked at Emily.
May you like
And for the first time in days, I didn’t know whether Daniel was threatening me…
or trying to save me.
