Chapter 5: The Woman Who Vanished
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
I stood in my apartment hallway with my keys in my hand, staring at the message.
The photo.
The words.
The impossible reality that someone had been outside Monica’s home while she was talking to me.
My first instinct was to call the police.
My second was to call Monica again.
I chose Monica.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nothing.
I tried again.
Still nothing.
“Pick up,” I whispered.
The ringing continued until it stopped.
Then my screen went dark.
I looked at the message again.
*You should have stopped digging.*
The person who sent it knew exactly what we were doing.
They knew about the storage account.
They knew about Monica.
They knew about me.
My apartment suddenly felt unsafe.
Every shadow looked different.
Every sound in the hallway made me freeze.
Then my phone rang.
I nearly dropped it.
It was Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Daniel.
Not Chris.
Not the man I thought I knew.
The man behind everything.
I answered.
“What did you do?””
There was silence.
Then his voice.
“Tara.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where is Monica?””
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
“You knew she was looking through your files.””
“Yes.””
The calmness in his voice made my anger rise.
“And?””
“And I told her to stop.””
“You threatened her.””
“No.””
“You scared her.””
“Tara—”
“Someone sent me a picture of her door.””
The line went quiet.
For the first time, I heard something different in his voice.
Concern.
“What?””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t get to act worried now.””
“I’m serious.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
A pause.
Then:
“Send me the number.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The number that sent you the message.””
“Why?””
“Because I need to know who it is.””
The way he said it bothered me.
Not because he sounded guilty.
Because he sounded afraid.
“Why would you be afraid of someone else knowing your secrets?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel?””
Finally, he said:
“Because not everyone who knows my secrets wants the truth.””
The sentence made my skin crawl.
“Who are they?””
Silence.
Then:
“Someone from my past.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another door I didn’t know existed.
“You need to listen to me,” he said.
“No.””
“Tara.””
“I don’t trust you.””
“I know.””
That surprised me.
He didn’t argue.
He didn’t deny it.
“I know I destroyed that.””
My grip tightened on the phone.
“Then why should I listen?””
“Because whoever sent that message is not protecting you.””
A chill ran through me.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean they don’t care about you.””
“Neither did you.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Silence.
Real silence.
Then he said quietly:
“You’re right.””
That was the first time he admitted anything.
And somehow, it made me angrier.
Because part of me wanted him to fight.
To defend himself.
To prove he was still the person I loved.
But he didn’t.
He just accepted the damage.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if someone is watching me, they’re watching you too.””
I looked around my apartment.
My heart started beating faster.
“Are you saying I’m in danger?””
“I’m saying you need to be careful.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Funny. The person who lied to me for three years is telling me to be careful.””
“I deserve that.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“Tara, please.””
The word felt strange.
Daniel never begged.
Chris never begged.
“Please what?””
“Don’t go to Monica’s house.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
“Because if that person is there, they may be waiting for you too.””
The call ended.
I spent the next hour sitting on my couch.
I hated that some part of me believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because fear recognized fear.
His warning sounded real.
And that scared me more.
I called Emily.
She answered immediately.
“Are you okay?””
“No.””
I told her about Monica.
About the message.
About Daniel’s call.
When I finished, she was quiet.
Then she said:
“Tara, don’t go anywhere alone.””
“I know.””
“I mean it.””
“I know.””
“No, listen to me. You’re trying to understand someone who has spent years manipulating people. That means you’re looking for logic where there might not be any.””
I looked at the floor.
“What if Monica is hurt?””
“Then we call the police.””
“I feel responsible.””
“You are not responsible for what he did.””
“I brought her into this.””
“No.””
Emily’s voice became firm.
“He brought both of you into this.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
The police arrived at Monica’s apartment twenty minutes later.
I had called after Emily convinced me not to go alone.
Two officers entered the building while I waited outside.
The rain had started again.
I stood beneath an umbrella, watching strangers walk past.
Every person looked suspicious.
Every car seemed like it might be following me.
Finally, one of the officers came outside.
“Are you Tara Collins?””
“Yes.””
“I’m Officer Bennett.””
“Is she okay?””
His expression changed slightly.
Not enough to answer.
Enough to scare me.
“What happened?””
“Her apartment was empty.””
My heart dropped.
“Empty?””
“Yes.””
“Was she there?””
“No.””
“Did she leave?””
“We don’t know.””
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
He held up a hand.
“Ms. Collins, we’re still investigating.””
I felt panic rising.
“She called me. She said someone was outside.””
“Did she mention who?””
I hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
I swallowed.
“She thought it was Daniel.””
The officer looked at his partner.
A small glance.
But I noticed.
“You know him?””
“No,” he said quickly.
Too quickly.
“Officer.””
He sighed.
“We’re aware of Daniel Whitmore.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“You’re not the first person to report concerns involving him.””
The rain felt louder.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying you need to be careful.””
Again.
That word.
Careful.
Everyone kept saying the same thing.
But nobody was telling me the truth.
“What happened to Monica?””
“We’re trying to find out.””
“Is she missing?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.””
The next day, I received a package.
No return address.
No name.
Just my apartment number.
I almost threw it away.
Almost.
But curiosity had already ruined my life once.
So I opened it.
Inside was a small black notebook.
Old.
Worn.
The kind of notebook someone carried for years.
I flipped it open.
The first page had one word.
*Rebecca.*
My hands went cold.
I turned the page.
Names.
Dates.
Addresses.
Notes.
Daniel’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
Because I had seen it on birthday cards.
On grocery lists.
On little notes he left on my fridge.
The same handwriting.
The same man.
But the words were different.
*Rebecca knows too much.*
I turned the page.
*Monica is becoming suspicious.*
Another page.
My name.
*Tara.*
My heart stopped.
Underneath:
*She believes everything.*
I dropped the notebook.
The apartment went silent.
I picked it up again with shaking hands.
There were pages about me.
About our relationship.
About my habits.
About my routines.
He had been documenting me.
Like I was part of a plan.
Then I reached the final page.
Only one sentence.
Written in darker ink.
*If Tara finds this, it means I failed to control the situation.*
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Daniel.
*Don’t open the notebook.*
I stared.
How did he know?
Another message appeared.
*Tara, listen to me. That notebook is not what you think.*
Then a third.
*The person who sent it wants you to believe I’m the monster.*
My fingers froze.
Because below his message was another notification.
A voicemail.
From Monica.
Timestamp:
Five minutes ago.
I pressed play.
For three seconds, there was only breathing.
Then Monica whispered:
“Tara…”
A pause.
A shaky breath.
Then:
“Daniel isn’t the only one who’s been lying.””
The voicemail cut off.
And beneath it, a second message appeared.
May you like
From the same unknown number.
*Now you know why Rebecca disappeared.*
