Amused

Chapter 8: The File That Started Everything

I read the final sentence until the words stopped looking like words.

*And they know Tara was never supposed to survive the day Daniel found her.*

The paper slipped from my hand.

Emily caught it before it reached the floor.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The room felt frozen.

Not because we were shocked anymore.

Shock had become something familiar.

This was something different.

This was the realization that my entire understanding of my own life might be wrong.

“What day?”” Emily finally asked.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The day he found you.””

My mind searched through memories.

The coffee shop.

The first conversation.

The first date.

The first time he told me he loved me.

But before all of that?

Nothing.

I had no idea.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

Emily looked at the letter again.

“Then we find out.””

I shook my head.

“How?””

She pointed at the notebook.

“The same way we found everything else.””

I looked at Daniel’s notes.

His secrets.

His hidden locations.

His carefully organized lies.

Then I noticed something.

A symbol.

It appeared beside the first location.

A small mark I had ignored before.

A circle with a line through it.

I grabbed the notebook.

“Wait.””

Emily leaned closer.

“What?””

“This symbol.””

She looked.

“It’s everywhere.””

I flipped through the pages.

She was right.

The symbol appeared next to certain names.

Certain dates.

Certain locations.

“What does it mean?”” I asked.

Before Emily could answer, my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“Tara, listen carefully.””

“No. You need to explain.””

“I will.””

“You knew.””

A pause.

“You knew Daniel was watching me before I met him.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“I knew he was assigned to find you.””

My chest tightened.

“Assigned by who?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

“Rebecca.””

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She sighed.

“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

“Who was he working with?””

“I don’t know their names.””

“But you know something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Her voice lowered.

“They were looking for a file.””

I closed my eyes.

“The file.””

“Yes.””

“What file?””

“That’s what Daniel was supposed to find.””

I looked at Emily.

She was listening.

“Rebecca, what was in it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why is everyone so afraid of it?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Because Daniel told me one thing.””

“What?””

“He said the file didn’t contain information about a crime.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

“He said it contained information about a person.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rebecca’s voice became barely audible.

“You.””

The next morning, Emily and I returned to the old Westbridge building.

The security guard wasn’t surprised to see us.

Almost like he expected us.

“You found the letter,” he said.

I stopped.

“You knew about it?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I knew Daniel left something.””

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because he told me if you ever came here, it meant he failed.””

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Failed.

Like protecting me had been part of a plan.

“Where is the file?”” I asked.

The man looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Someone does.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Daniel.””

My anger rose.

“Of course.””

But the man shook his head.

“No.””

“What?””

“He doesn’t have it.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“He never found it.””

I looked at Emily.

“But he spent years looking.””

The man nodded.

“That was the point.””

“What was?””

“Keeping him searching.””

I felt confused.

“Who was keeping him searching?””

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to a locked cabinet behind the desk.

He opened it.

Inside was an old box.

He placed it on the counter.

“Daniel left this too.””

My heart started racing.

“For me?””

He nodded.

I opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a small USB drive.

The first photograph made me stop breathing.

It was me.

Not recently.

Years earlier.

I was standing outside a building.

A building I recognized.

My old workplace.

I looked at the date.

Seven years ago.

“What is this?””

Emily looked over my shoulder.

“Tara…”

I picked up another photo.

Me again.

Different place.

Different year.

Someone had been watching me long before Daniel entered my life.

I felt sick.

“How long?””

The security guard looked at me.

“What?””

“How long has someone been following me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

I grabbed the USB drive.

“Can we open this?””

The guard shook his head.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told me something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He said if Tara ever finds the file, she should never open it alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

The man looked at the USB drive.

“Because whoever wanted it hidden will know when it’s opened.””

We took the drive to Emily’s apartment.

No internet connection.

No smart devices.

No phones nearby.

We followed every paranoid instruction we could think of.

Because after everything, paranoia felt reasonable.

Emily plugged it in.

A single folder appeared.

No password.

No protection.

Just one file.

*TARA.*

I stared at it.

“Open it.””

Emily looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

No.

I wasn’t.

But I nodded.

The video started.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man sitting in a chair.

Daniel.

But not the Daniel I knew.

Younger.

Tired.

Angry.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””

My chest tightened.

His voice continued.

“Tara, I don’t know when you’ll see this. I don’t know what you’ve been told. But I need you to understand something.””

He paused.

“I did lie to you.””

I looked away.

“I know.””

The video continued.

“But the biggest lie wasn’t my name.””

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“The biggest lie was that I found you by accident.””

My heart stopped.

Emily reached for my hand.

“I was sent to you.””

The words echoed.

“I was told you were dangerous.””

I stared at the screen.

“Dangerous?””

Daniel continued.

“They said you knew something that could expose them.””

A folder appeared on screen.

Documents.

Names.

Photos.

“The truth is, Tara, I wasn’t the first person looking for you.””

The video froze briefly.

Then resumed.

“Someone else found you first.””

A sound came from the hallway outside Emily’s apartment.

A knock.

Three slow knocks.

We both froze.

Another knock.

Emily whispered:

“Did you tell anyone we were here?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The screen kept playing.

Daniel’s voice continued:

“And if someone is watching this with you…”

The knocking came again.

Louder.

“…then they already know the truth.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Emily grabbed my arm.

The apartment went completely dark.

Then my phone lit up.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Now you finally know why Daniel chose you.*

May you like

And beneath it was a second message.

*Because your father was the one who created the file.*
