Amused

Chapter 7: The Life He Built Around Me

I couldn’t stop staring at the first location in the notebook.

A set of numbers.

A date.

A place.

A place connected to me.

Not Monica.

Not Rebecca.

Not another woman whose name I had never heard.

Me.

That was the part I couldn’t understand.

For days, I had believed I was simply another victim of Daniel’s lies.

Another person added to a list.

Another chapter in a story he had written over and over again.

But now Rebecca was telling me something different.

I wasn’t random.

I wasn’t an accident.

Something about me had mattered before I even met him.

And that terrified me.

“Call her back,” Emily said.

I looked at her.

“Who?””

“Rebecca.””

I shook my head.

“She’s not answering.””

“Try again.””

“I already did.””

“Then keep trying.””

I looked down at my phone.

Emily was right.

I needed answers.

But deep inside, I was afraid of what those answers would reveal.

Because every time I uncovered something about Daniel, I lost another piece of the person I thought he was.

I called again.

This time, someone answered.

But it wasn’t Rebecca.

A man’s voice said:

“Tara?””

My entire body froze.

I pulled the phone away and checked the screen.

Unknown number.

“Who is this?””

The man didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“You need to stop looking.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who are you?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

A quiet laugh.

“Everyone says that at first.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“Where is Rebecca?””

Silence.

Then:

“You really don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

“People keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then explain it.””

Another pause.

“You think Daniel is the problem.””

I gripped the phone.

“Isn’t he?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“Then who is?””

The man lowered his voice.

“You.””

The call ended.

I stood there, staring at the screen.

Emily immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Someone said I was the problem.””

Her expression hardened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you recognize the voice?””

“No.””

She took a breath.

“Okay.””

“Okay?””

“Yes.””

She grabbed the notebook.

“Then we stop reacting.””

“What?””

“We’ve been running from one disaster to another. Daniel calls, we panic. Monica disappears, we panic. Someone threatens you, we panic.””

She looked at me.

“We need to start thinking.””

I hated that she was right.

Because fear had been controlling me since the moment Monica said one name.

Daniel.

We went to the first location that afternoon.

I almost changed my mind three times before we arrived.

The address led us to an old office building on the edge of the city.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

The paint was peeling.

The windows were dusty.

A faded sign hung above the entrance.

*Westbridge Consulting Services.*

Emily looked at me.

“Does that mean anything?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But the second I stepped inside, something felt familiar.

Not the building.

The feeling.

Like I had been here before.

The lobby was empty except for a security desk.

An older man looked up.

“Can I help you?””

I hesitated.

“We’re looking for information about a company that used to be here.””

He looked at the sign behind him.

“Westbridge?””

“Yes.””

He frowned.

“Why?””

“Do you remember someone named Daniel Whitmore?””

The man’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You knew him?””

He looked away.

“Everyone knew him.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What was this place?””

The man leaned back.

“Depends who you ask.””

“What does that mean?””

He sighed.

“Some people said it was a consulting firm.””

“And others?””

“Others said it was where people went when they needed a new beginning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“A new beginning?””

The man looked at me carefully.

“Who are you?””

I swallowed.

“Tara.””

His face changed.

Like he recognized the name.

“You’re Tara?””

I froze.

“How do you know me?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached beneath the desk and pulled out a small envelope.

“This was left here.””

My fingers went cold.

“For me?””

He nodded.

“Months ago.””

“By who?””

The man looked at the envelope.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t open it until we were back in the car.

My hands shook as I tore it open.

Inside was a single letter.

No greeting.

No explanation.

Just words.

*Tara,*

*If you are reading this, then you have found the place where everything started.*

I stopped.

Everything started.

Emily leaned closer.

I did.

*I know you think I lied to you because I wanted something from you. That isn’t true.*

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what a liar would say.

But I kept reading.

*When I met you, I already knew who you were.*

My breathing stopped.

I looked at Emily.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

I continued.

*Three years before we met, I saw you for the first time. You don’t remember me. You shouldn’t. But I remembered you.*

My hands began shaking.

*You were involved in something you didn’t understand. Something that put you in danger.*

I stopped reading.

“What?””

Emily looked worried.

“Continue.””

I forced myself.

*I created the identity of Chris because Daniel Whitmore could not get close to you.*

The words blurred.

*I needed to become someone you would trust.*

I dropped the letter.

“No.””

Emily picked it up.

“Tara…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

But I knew.

I knew because somewhere deep inside, a terrible question had already appeared.

Why me?

Why did a man like Daniel choose me?

Why did he hide me from everyone?

Why did he keep records about me?

Why did he build an entire life around me?

Because it wasn’t random.

It never was.

We went back to the apartment and read the letter again.

Every sentence felt worse the second time.

Daniel wasn’t denying it.

He was admitting it.

He had chosen me.

He had studied me.

He had created Chris.

But why?

The next page of the letter answered.

*Before I met you, I was hired to find information about you.*

My heart dropped.

Hired.

Someone hired him.

*I was supposed to learn what you knew.*

I whispered:

“What I knew?””

Emily looked at me.

“Did you?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

The letter continued.

*The problem was that the more time I spent with you, the less I could complete the assignment.*

My eyes burned.

*Because you weren’t what they told me you were.*

I stared at the page.

“They?””

Who were they?

*The people who hired me believed you had something that belonged to them.*

Something.

Not someone.

Something.

*A file.*

I stopped.

A file.

*A file that could destroy everything they built.*

The room became silent.

Emily looked at me.

“Tara…”

I barely heard her.

Because suddenly, my entire relationship made sense in the worst possible way.

The secrets.

The surveillance.

The notebook.

The careful attention.

He wasn’t just dating me.

He was investigating me.

But then why did he stay?

Why did he keep pretending?

The final lines of the letter answered.

*I was supposed to leave after I found the file.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*But then I fell in love with you.*

I hated that those words still affected me.

I hated that my heart still reacted to his confession.

Then I reached the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

*Tara, the reason I lied about my name is because the people looking for that file already know Chris.*

I frowned.

What did that mean?

I turned the page.

There was one last line.

Written differently.

May you like

Like someone else had added it.

*And they know Tara was never supposed to survive the day Daniel found her.*
