Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Left Behind
I read my father's letter three times.
Still, the words didn't make sense.
*Ethan is not the person you should be afraid of.*
My father had written the letter years ago.
Before he died.
Before any of this happened.
But somehow, he knew.
He knew secrets would come out.
The next page explained everything.
My father had discovered Ethan after receiving a letter from Ethan's mother.
He hadn't known about the child.
But after learning the truth, he tried to help.
Not publicly.
Not officially.
Quietly.
He created a trust fund.
Money for Ethan's education.
Money for his future.
But there was one condition.
Ethan had to receive it only after proving he wanted reconciliation, not revenge.
My hands tightened.
My father wasn't perfect.
He had made mistakes.
But he wasn't the monster Ethan described.
I looked at Ethan.
"You knew about the trust.""
His face changed.
"Of course I did.""
"And you wanted access.""
Silence.
That was enough.
Ethan looked away.
"I deserved it.""
"You deserved the truth.""
I stood.
"But not by destroying innocent people.""
When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting.
She looked tired.
"I know what you found.""
I stared.
"You knew my father was helping Ethan.""
"Yes.""
"And you used that.""
She closed her eyes.
"I was desperate.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were afraid.""
She looked at me.
"What's the difference?""
"The difference is what you do with that fear.""
She sat down.
"I thought if Ethan exposed everything, our family would fall apart.""
"Our family fell apart because you lied.""
She started crying.
Quietly.
Not dramatically.
And for a moment, I saw the woman I used to know.
"I was wrong.""
I didn't answer.
"I know I hurt Nia.""
Her voice broke.
"I know I hurt Malik.""
The silence stretched.
"Can you ever forgive me?""
I looked at her.
"I don't know.""
And that was the honest answer.
The custody hearing continued the following week.
This time, Vanessa didn't fight.
She admitted what she had done.
The judge granted temporary custody to me.
But before leaving, the judge spoke directly to Vanessa.
"Your actions damaged the trust your children had in you.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I know.""
Outside the courthouse, Malik stood beside me.
Nia held my hand.
For the first time in weeks, they looked peaceful.
Then Nia asked:
"Is Mom going away forever?""
I looked at her.
"I don't know.""
She nodded.
Then whispered:
"I still love her.""
I squeezed her hand.
"I know.""
That night, I sat alone in the kitchen.
The same kitchen where everything started.
The same table.
The same chairs.
But everything had changed.
My phone rang.
Claire.
I answered.
"Daniel.""
"What happened?""
Her voice was nervous.
"There's something else.""
I closed my eyes.
"What now?""
"I found another document.""
"What document?""
"A document Vanessa hid.""
My stomach tightened.
"Where?""
"In your house.""
I stood.
"What does it say?""
A pause.
Then Claire whispered:
"Daniel, it's about Nia.""
My heart stopped.
"What about Nia?""
Claire's voice became quieter.
"It says Vanessa wasn't the only person who knew about the food.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who else knew?""
Silence.
Then:
"Your mother.""
I froze.
"My mother?""
"Yes.""
I couldn't speak.
My mother.
The woman who had comforted Nia.
The woman who had helped me.
The woman I trusted.
Claire continued:
"Daniel, there is something your mother never told you.""
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward my children's rooms.
And for the second time in my life, I wondered if the people closest to me were hiding things.
May you like
Then Claire said:
"Your mother knew Vanessa was hurting Nia months before you did.""
