Amused

Chapter 6: The Voice Recording

I stared at the message on Vanessa’s hidden phone until the words blurred.

*The children are the only witnesses. Make sure they stay quiet until court.*

For a few seconds, I couldn't move.

The house felt different.

Not like a home.

Like a place where someone had been carefully arranging lies behind closed doors.

Vanessa stood across from me, watching my face.

She knew.

She knew I had seen it.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

I looked up.

"How long?""

Her expression hardened.

"How long what?""

"How long have you been planning this?""

She crossed her arms.

"You’re twisting everything.""

I held up the phone.

"Then explain this.""

Her eyes moved toward the screen.

A flash of panic appeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"You went through my things?""

I almost laughed.

"That’s your defense?""

She stepped closer.

"You had no right.""

"No right?""

My voice shook.

"My daughter was found at a bus station because she was scared of what you were doing.""

Vanessa looked away.

"She overreacted.""

Those four words changed something inside me.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Something colder.

I realized I had spent years waiting for the woman I married to come back.

But maybe she was never coming back.

"Where were you planning to send them?""

She stayed silent.

"Vanessa.""

"I wasn't sending them anywhere.""

"Then why did Nia run?""

Her jaw tightened.

"Because she is dramatic.""

I walked away before I said something I couldn't take back.

The next morning, my attorney, Michael, met me at his office.

He placed the evidence on his desk.

Bank records.

Messages.

The fake statement.

The hidden phone.

Everything.

He read silently for several minutes.

Then he looked up.

"Daniel, this is serious.""

"I know.""

"No. I don't think you do.""

He tapped the phone.

"Someone coached your children into silence.""

My stomach tightened.

"What happens now?""

Michael leaned back.

"Now we stop reacting.""

He opened a folder.

"We build the truth.""

That afternoon, I picked up Nia from my mother’s house.

She had spent the night there after the police found her.

When she saw me, she ran.

Not walked.

Ran.

She crashed into my arms.

I held her tightly.

"I’m sorry.""

Her voice was muffled against my shirt.

"For what?""

"For causing problems.""

My heart broke.

"You didn't cause anything.""

"But Mom is angry.""

I pulled back.

"Nia, listen to me.""

She looked at me.

"Adults make choices. Children don't carry the blame for them.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered:

"Dad?""

"Yeah?""

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

She looked around.

Like she was afraid someone might hear.

"Mom made me practice what to say.""

My entire body went still.

"What?""

She grabbed my hand.

"She said if anyone asked, I had to say I was scared of you.""

I swallowed.

"Did you ever say that?""

She shook her head quickly.

"No.""

"Why did she make you say it?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because she said if I didn't, we'd lose everything.""

I looked away.

Trying to keep my emotions under control.

Then Nia said something I would never forget.

"She said Daddy was the enemy.""

That night, I sat with Malik.

I showed him the evidence.

Not everything.

Only enough.

He stared at the papers.

"I knew something was wrong.""

"I know.""

"But I didn't think she would do this.""

Neither did I.

He looked down.

"Does this mean Mom goes to jail?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I didn't know.

And because despite everything, she was still his mother.

"I don't know.""

He nodded.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

His face changed.

"What?""

He handed it to me.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*We need to talk before your father destroys this family. Meet me alone.*

I looked at Malik.

"Did she send you messages like this before?""

He hesitated.

"Sometimes.""

"What kind?""

He swallowed.

"She tells me I need to choose sides.""

The next morning, I met Vanessa at a park.

Public.

Open.

Safe.

She arrived ten minutes late.

She looked different.

Not angry.

Tired.

"You brought your lawyer?""

"No.""

"Good.""

She sat down.

For the first time in days, she looked like a person instead of an opponent.

"I know how this looks.""

I said nothing.

She continued.

"I made mistakes.""

"That's not what this is.""

She looked at me.

"Then what is it?""

"You didn't make mistakes, Vanessa.""

I leaned forward.

"You made decisions.""

Her eyes dropped.

For a moment, she looked ashamed.

Then she whispered:

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

I stared.

"You almost made our children lose everything.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I thought if I controlled the situation, I could fix it.""

"You forged documents.""

"I panicked.""

"You starved Nia.""

Her face collapsed.

"I never meant for it to go that far.""

I wanted to believe that.

I really did.

But then she said something that made my blood freeze.

"I didn't know Claire would give you the recording.""

I stared at her.

"What recording?""

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Too late.

"What recording, Vanessa?""

She stood.

"I have to go.""

I stood too.

"No.""

She looked at me.

"You don't get to walk away after saying that.""

Her face changed.

Fear returned.

And suddenly I understood.

Claire hadn't just given me documents.

She had something else.

Something Vanessa was terrified of.

I called Claire immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

"She told you about it, didn't she?""

My voice was low.

"What recording?""

A long silence.

May you like

Then Claire whispered:

"The recording that proves why Vanessa really wanted custody.""
