Amused

Chapter 4: The Truth Behind Vanessa’s Smile

Claire asked me to meet her the next morning.

A small coffee shop.

Away from my house.

Away from Vanessa.

When she walked in, I barely recognized her.

She looked tired.

Older.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret.

"Daniel.""

I stood.

"Claire.""

She sat down.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she pushed a folder across the table.

"I should have told you sooner.""

I opened it.

Inside were messages.

Emails.

Documents.

My hands went cold.

"What is this?""

Claire looked down.

"Vanessa has been planning this for months.""

I read the first message.

It was between Vanessa and someone named Rebecca.

A family lawyer.

The message was simple.

"Once Daniel is forced out, the children stay with me.""

I looked up.

"Forced out?""

Claire nodded.

"Vanessa wanted evidence against you.""

"Evidence of what?""

"Anything.""

She swallowed.

"She wanted to make it look like you were unstable. That you abandoned the family because of work.""

I stared at the papers.

"Why?""

Claire looked ashamed.

"Because she wanted control.""

"Control?""

"Money. The house. The children.""

I closed the folder.

"Why are you helping me?""

Claire looked away.

"Because I helped her.""

That surprised me.

"What?""

She took a deep breath.

"At first, I told her she was making a mistake. But she convinced me you were cold. That you didn't care.""

I thought about Nia's face at the dinner table.

How scared she was when she saw me.

"Then what changed?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I saw what she did to Nia.""

The room went quiet.

"Claire...""

"She told me it was discipline.""

Claire shook her head.

"It wasn't.""

I returned home with the folder.

Vanessa was there.

Waiting.

She looked at my face and knew.

"You talked to her.""

I didn't answer.

"You had no right.""

"No right?""

My voice rose.

"You starved our daughter while building a case against me.""

Her face hardened.

"Careful.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I'm done being careful.""

For a moment, I saw the woman I married disappear.

Not completely.

But enough.

"Daniel, you don't understand what motherhood requires.""

I stared at her.

"Motherhood doesn't require cruelty.""

She looked toward the stairs.

"Nia is too sensitive.""

"She's ten.""

"Exactly.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Children need discipline.""

"Children need love.""

She laughed.

"You think you're better than me?""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"I think I should have protected them sooner.""

That night, I sat with Nia.

She was drawing at the table.

A family picture.

I noticed something.

She had drawn herself standing far away.

"Why are you over here?""

She looked at the paper.

"Because that's where I stand.""

My heart broke.

I pulled her close.

"Not anymore.""

She leaned against me.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Is Mom mad because of me?""

I immediately shook my head.

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Completely.""

She was quiet.

Then asked:

"Will she hate me?""

I didn't have an answer.

Because I wasn't sure.

The next morning, I filed emergency custody paperwork.

But before I could tell Vanessa, she beat me to it.

She walked into the living room holding a document.

Her smile had returned.

A confident smile.

"You wanted to play legal games?""

She placed the paper on the table.

"I already started.""

I looked down.

My blood ran cold.

It was a custody request.

And attached was a statement claiming I was emotionally abusive.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"You should have checked what your children wrote before you trusted them.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She smiled.

Then she placed another paper beside it.

May you like

A handwritten note.

With Malik's signature.
