Amused

Chapter 8: The Secret Buried in Our Family

The courtroom emptied after Vanessa's confession.

But I couldn't leave.

Not after hearing that name.

My father.

A man who had been dead for six years.

A man Vanessa had barely mentioned since his funeral.

I looked at her.

"What does my father have to do with this?""

She looked exhausted.

"I didn't want this to come out.""

"Come out?""

My voice rose.

"You destroyed our family and now you're telling me this is about my father?""

The judge ordered a recess.

But Vanessa's words followed me.

Outside the courtroom, Michael pulled me aside.

"Don't make decisions based on emotion.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's easy for you to say.""

"I know.""

He softened.

"But whatever this is, we need facts.""

Two hours later, Vanessa agreed to meet.

With lawyers present.

No secrets.

No manipulation.

She sat across from me.

"I should have told you years ago.""

"About what?""

She looked down.

"Your father had another family.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Not another wife.""

She shook her head.

"Another child.""

The room went silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She placed a photograph on the table.

A young man.

Around my age.

Standing beside my father.

"This is Ethan.""

I stared at the picture.

My father had never mentioned him.

Not once.

"How do you know?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because he contacted me.""

"When?""

"Two years ago.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because he was asking for money.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He said your father left him nothing.""

I shook my head.

"My father wasn't like that.""

Vanessa looked away.

"Daniel...""

I hated that she sounded sympathetic.

Because I didn't want sympathy from her.

Not after everything.

"Why did you hide this?""

She whispered:

"Because I was scared Ethan would hurt the family.""

I stared.

"How?""

"He said if I didn't help him, he would tell you things about your father.""

"What things?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

That was the first time I realized something.

She wasn't just hiding information.

She was protecting herself.

The next morning, I found Ethan.

Michael helped.

A private investigator located him.

He agreed to meet.

A quiet restaurant.

The moment he saw me, he smiled.

Not warmly.

Like he had been waiting.

"You look exactly like him.""

I sat down.

"Who are you?""

He laughed softly.

"You really don't know.""

"No.""

His smile disappeared.

"Of course you don't.""

For two hours, Ethan told me a story I never expected.

My father had a secret relationship before marrying my mother.

Ethan was the result.

But according to Ethan, my father abandoned him.

Left him with nothing.

"He built a perfect family with you," Ethan said.

I stared.

"I never knew.""

"That's the point.""

He leaned forward.

"People like your father are good at hiding things.""

I felt sick.

"Why contact Vanessa?""

"Because she was easier to reach.""

"What did you want?""

He smiled.

"Justice.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"You wanted money.""

His smile faded.

Finally.

A crack.

"You have no idea what it feels like.""

Maybe he was hurt.

Maybe he had suffered.

But that didn't excuse what was happening.

"You used my wife.""

"I gave her information.""

"What information?""

He looked at me.

"About your father's estate.""

I froze.

"My father's estate?""

Ethan leaned back.

"Did you really think your father left everything to you by accident?""

I felt a chill.

"What are you saying?""

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out an old envelope.

"This was supposed to go to you.""

I stared.

"Why do you have it?""

His eyes narrowed.

"Because your father knew I existed.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

The first line made my hands shake.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then someone has already told you about Ethan.*

I kept reading.

May you like

And then I reached the sentence that changed everything.

*But Ethan is not the person you should be afraid of.*
