Chapter 3: The Child Who Stayed Silent
I didn't sleep that night.
Not because of Vanessa.
Because of Malik.
A father knows when his child is hiding pain.
I had seen it on his face at the dinner table.
Fear.
Guilt.
And something else.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for sixteen years old.
The next morning, I found him sitting outside on the porch.
He had headphones around his neck but no music playing.
"Can I sit?""
He shrugged.
I sat beside him.
For a while, we watched cars pass.
Then I asked:
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He looked down.
"Because you were happy.""
That answer hurt.
"What?""
"You always said our family was finally okay.""
I swallowed.
"Malik...""
He rubbed his hands together.
"Mom wasn't always like this.""
"I know.""
"No, Dad.""
He looked at me.
"You don't.""
The words landed hard.
He took a breath.
"After you started traveling more, things changed.""
"How?""
"Mom got angry all the time.""
I stayed quiet.
"At first it was little things. She'd complain about groceries. About bills. About Nia being messy.""
"And then?""
His eyes moved toward the house.
"Then she started controlling everything.""
I clenched my fists.
"What about the food?""
He nodded.
"That too.""
"How long?""
He looked away.
"A year.""
A year.
My daughter had been living with that for a year.
And I didn't know.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His voice cracked.
"Because Mom said if I made problems, she'd tell you I was disrespectful.""
I stared at him.
"She threatened you?""
He didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That afternoon, I took Malik and Nia out for lunch.
Nothing fancy.
Just burgers and fries.
But Nia looked at the menu like she was afraid to choose.
"What do you want?""
She looked nervous.
"Anything is okay.""
I smiled sadly.
"No. What do you want?""
She hesitated.
Then quietly said:
"The biggest milkshake.""
I laughed.
"That's my girl.""
For the first time in days, she smiled.
But when we got home, Vanessa was waiting.
"You took them out?""
"Yes.""
"You went behind my back.""
I stared.
"They're our children.""
She stepped closer.
"You are making me the villain.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Your choices are doing that.""
Her face changed.
"You really think you know everything.""
"Enough.""
She laughed.
"You don't even know why Claire needed money.""
I stopped.
"What?""
Vanessa went silent.
A little too late.
I noticed.
"Why did you send Claire money?""
She looked away.
"That's not your concern.""
"It came from our account.""
She grabbed her purse.
"I need space.""
"Vanessa.""
She stopped at the door.
"You should ask yourself why Claire disappeared from our lives.""
Then she left.
That night, I opened the documents again.
There was something I had missed.
A transfer from two years ago.
A payment labeled:
"Medical support.""
I stared at it.
Claire had been sick?
Why hadn't Vanessa told me?
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through.
"Daniel?""
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"It's Claire.""
I sat up.
"Why are you calling me?""
Her voice shook.
"Because Vanessa doesn't know I have proof.""
My heart started pounding.
"Proof of what?""
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
"Proof that Vanessa didn't just hide food from Nia.""
I gripped the phone.
"What did she do?""
May you like
And Claire said the one sentence that changed everything.
"She has been trying to take your children away from you.""
