Chapter 6: The Woman Who Watched My Wife Die
I didn't speak for several seconds.
The workshop seemed to shrink around me.
Daniel stood beside the workbench, his face drained of color.
The detective slowly reached for his recording device.
I forced myself to breathe.
"Margaret, say that again.""
She sobbed.
"I helped Richard.""
"Helped him do what?""
"Keep Claire quiet.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Did you know about the accident?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know someone was going to kill my wife?""
There was a long pause.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
The woman on the other end of the phone had held my hand at Claire's funeral.
She had told me I was like a son to her.
She had hugged me when I brought Emma home from the hospital.
And she had known.
"Why?"" I asked.
"Ryan, please. You don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
"Richard told me Claire was going to destroy the family. He said the company would collapse, that you would lose everything, and that Lily would be taken away by strangers.""
"So you helped him?""
"I thought I was saving my granddaughter.""
I laughed once.
It was an ugly, broken sound.
"By letting Claire die?""
Margaret began crying harder.
"I didn't know Grant would actually do it.""
I turned toward the detective.
He was writing everything down.
"Margaret, where are you?""
"At home.""
"Don't leave.""
"Ryan, please, I need to see Lily.""
"No.""
"She's my granddaughter.""
"She was your granddaughter when she was locked inside that wall, too.""
Margaret started sobbing.
"I know.""
"Did you ever visit her?""
Silence.
"Margaret?""
"I brought her food sometimes.""
My stomach turned.
"Sometimes?""
"Grant wouldn't let me take her outside. He said it was safer to keep her hidden.""
I felt my voice rising.
"You knew she was starving?""
"I didn't know it was that bad!""
"You saw her!""
"Ryan, please!""
I ended the call.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Then Detective Harris placed a hand on my shoulder.
"We need to speak with her immediately.""
I nodded.
"Get a warrant. Get everything.""
Daniel picked up the second cassette.
"There's another thing.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
He pointed to a small handwritten note tucked beneath the tape.
It contained a phone number and a name.
Margaret's attorney — Edward Collins.
Below it, Claire had written:
Ask him about the original birth certificate.
I stared at the note.
"What does a lawyer have to do with this?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Claire believed he helped them falsify the records.""
Margaret lived in a large white house on the edge of town.
I'd been there dozens of times.
The front garden was filled with roses, and a stone path led to the porch.
I used to bring her flowers on Mother's Day.
Now the sight of the house made me feel physically sick.
Detective Harris and two officers accompanied me.
Margaret opened the door before we knocked.
She was wearing a cream-colored cardigan and holding a handkerchief.
Her eyes were swollen.
"Ryan.""
I walked inside without greeting her.
"Where are the documents?""
She closed the door.
"Please sit down.""
"I didn't come here for tea.""
She flinched.
Detective Harris introduced himself and explained that he wanted to ask questions about Claire's death, the missing child, and the financial records.
Margaret nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"Can we speak alone?""
"No.""
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
For a moment, she looked like the elderly woman I remembered.
Then she began talking.
"Claire came to me five years ago. She was terrified. She said Richard and Grant were moving money through the company and using your name.""
I stood near the fireplace.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She wanted to. But Richard convinced her that you were already involved.""
"That was a lie.""
"I know that now.""
"How?""
Margaret looked down at her hands.
"Because I saw the records.""
She explained that Richard had approached her several weeks before Claire died.
He told her the company was facing a financial crisis.
He said Claire had discovered the transfers and was threatening to report them.
He claimed the investigation would destroy Mitchell Construction and leave the entire family bankrupt.
"I believed him," Margaret whispered.
I stared at her.
"You believed a man who wanted to take his granddaughter away?""
"He said Lily would be placed with a family that could protect her.""
"She had a family! She had me!""
Margaret began crying.
"Richard said you weren't capable of raising a baby alone.""
I stepped closer.
"Because I was working?""
"Because you were always at the construction sites. Because you trusted Grant. Because you didn't know what was happening.""
I shook my head.
"So you helped them steal my daughter.""
Margaret pressed the handkerchief against her mouth.
"Yes.""
"Tell me about the night Claire died.""
She stared at the floor.
"Richard called me around nine. He said Claire was driving to meet someone who could take the documents. He asked me to call her and convince her to come home.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
"What did you tell her?""
Margaret's voice cracked.
"I told her Lily was sick. I told her she needed to come back immediately.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was Lily sick?""
"No.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"You used her baby to lure her home.""
Margaret covered her face.
"I didn't know Grant was waiting for her.""
"What happened next?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Claire arrived at the old road near the warehouse. Richard was waiting there. Grant was already inside another vehicle.""
The detective leaned forward.
"Did you witness the collision?""
Margaret nodded.
"I was in the car behind them.""
I gripped the fireplace mantel.
"Tell me.""
"Richard blocked Claire's car. She got out and started shouting. I heard her say she would go to the police. Then Grant approached her.""
Margaret stopped.
"Keep going," I demanded.
"He tried to take her handbag. Claire fought him. She managed to get away and ran toward the road.""
My voice became barely audible.
"And then?""
Margaret began shaking.
"Grant followed her. Richard shouted for him to stop.""
"Did he?""
"No.""
She closed her eyes.
"I heard the impact.""
I stared at her.
"Was she alive?""
Margaret started crying.
"Yes.""
The detective looked up sharply.
"What?""
Margaret nodded.
"She was still breathing when we reached her.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Then why didn't you call an ambulance?""
She looked at me.
"I wanted to.""
"But?""
"Richard said if she survived, she would expose everything. He said we would all go to prison.""
I could barely hear her over the pounding in my ears.
"So you left her.""
Margaret covered her face.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to go silent.
I remembered Claire's last voicemail.
It had arrived two hours before the accident.
She'd sounded happy.
She'd said she wanted to tell me something important when I got home.
I had been on a construction site.
I'd promised to call her back.
I never did.
And now I knew she had spent her final moments waiting for someone to help her.
Someone who had been standing beside her.
I turned away.
Detective Harris began asking Margaret more questions.
She admitted that Richard had later arranged the false death certificate and paid someone to alter the hospital records.
She also revealed that Grant had been given control of the guardianship trust.
But there was one detail that made the detective stop writing.
"Mrs. Collins," he said, "who was the person who actually transported Lily away from the hospital?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Richard arranged that.""
"Who carried out the transfer?""
She looked at me.
Then she said:
"Melissa.""
I closed my eyes.
"She was Claire's sister. She was working at the hospital. She knew the staff and had access to the maternity records.""
"Did she know Claire had died?""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did she know Ryan was being told the baby had died too?""
"Yes.""
I felt something break inside me.
Detective Harris stood.
"Mrs. Collins, you're coming with us.""
Margaret didn't resist.
But as the officers helped her to her feet, she suddenly turned toward me.
"Ryan, there's something else.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Claire didn't die immediately.""
I felt sick.
"What are you talking about?""
Margaret began crying again.
"At the hospital, before they moved Lily, Claire was brought in. She was still alive.""
I grabbed the back of a chair.
"That isn't possible. The hospital records say she died at the scene.""
"Those records were changed.""
"How long?""
Margaret's lips trembled.
"Almost four hours.""
I couldn't breathe.
Four hours.
Four hours in which Claire might have spoken.
Four hours in which she might have asked for me.
Four hours in which someone could have saved her.
"Did she regain consciousness?""
Margaret nodded.
"Once.""
"What did she say?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"She asked for you.""
I turned away.
The room blurred.
Then Margaret whispered:
"She also asked about Lily. Richard told her the baby was safe.""
My hands began shaking.
"He lied to her?""
Margaret nodded.
"Claire believed him. She died thinking her daughter was alive and protected.""
I covered my face.
I couldn't stand it.
Not another lie.
Not another secret.
Not another person telling me my wife had died peacefully when she had actually spent her final hours begging for help.
Detective Harris escorted Margaret outside.
I remained in the living room.
On a small table stood a framed photograph of Claire and Lily.
Claire was holding the baby against her chest.
She looked radiant.
I picked it up.
On the back was a handwritten message.
For Mom. Please take care of my little girl if anything happens to me.
My eyes filled.
Margaret had kept that photograph.
She had kept the memory of the daughter she had helped betray.
Back at the hospital, I found Lily sitting beside Emma.
They were watching cartoons.
Lily had a bowl of soft food on her lap, and Emma was carefully arranging pieces of fruit into a smiley face.
"Daddy!"" Emma called.
I forced a smile.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
Lily looked up.
"Daddy, look.""
She held out a small drawing.
It showed three stick figures standing beneath a yellow sun.
One was tall.
One had long hair.
One was very small.
Above them, in uneven letters, she had written:
FAMILY.
I sat beside her.
"That's beautiful.""
She pointed at the tallest figure.
"That's you.""
Then she pointed at the smallest.
"That's me.""
"And who's this?""
"Emma.""
I smiled.
"Perfect.""
Lily hesitated.
Then she looked toward the door.
"Is Grandma coming?""
My smile disappeared.
"Why do you ask?""
"She said she would take me somewhere nice.""
I looked at her carefully.
"Did Grandma ever take you somewhere nice before?""
Lily shook her head.
"She brought me food sometimes. But she always cried.""
My chest tightened.
"What did she tell you?""
Lily lowered her voice.
"She said Mommy was watching me from heaven.""
I swallowed.
"Did she tell you anything else?""
Lily nodded.
"She said if I was a good girl, Daddy would come one day.""
I reached for her hand.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to be good to deserve love.""
She stared at me.
"Even if I cry?""
"Even if you cry.""
"Even if I break things?""
"Even then.""
"Even if I don't remember Mommy?""
I kissed her forehead.
"Especially then.""
She leaned against me.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Harris.
I answered.
"Ryan, we found something in Margaret's house.""
"What?""
"A locked cabinet containing medical records, photographs, and a second birth certificate.""
I sat upright.
"What does the birth certificate say?""
There was a pause.
"According to this document, Lily was born under a different name.""
I frowned.
"What name?""
Harris lowered his voice.
"Not Mitchell.""
I looked at Lily.
"Then whose name?""
The detective answered.
"Her biological father is listed as Ryan Mitchell, but the maternal information has been altered.""
My heart began pounding.
"Claire's name?""
"No.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then whose?""
Harris hesitated.
"Melissa's.""
I stared at the hospital wall.
"That's impossible. Melissa is Claire's sister.""
"I know.""
"She was Lily's aunt.""
"That's what we've always believed.""
I slowly turned toward Daniel, who had just entered the room.
He looked at my expression.
"What's happened?""
I couldn't answer.
The detective continued.
"Ryan, there's something else. The DNA records attached to the original hospital file suggest the baby wasn't born to Claire.""
My entire body went cold.
"Then who gave birth to my daughter?""
The detective's final words changed everything.
"Melissa did.""
I looked at the sleeping little girl beside me.
And suddenly, the woman who had hidden her in the wall wasn't just her aunt.
She was her biological mother.
But if Melissa had given birth to Lily, why had Claire been raising her?
And why had everyone spent five years insisting Claire was the mother?
I stared at Daniel.
He slowly sat down.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Ryan, there's a reason Claire never told you the truth about Lily's birth.""
