Chapter 2: The Secret Buried Beneath Five Years of Lies
I had faced angry subcontractors, lawsuits, financial disasters, and a crane collapse that nearly killed three workers.
Nothing had prepared me for the sound of my front door opening while my daughter hid behind me.
"Melissa?"" a familiar voice called.
"I'm home.""
Grant Parker.
My business partner.
My daughter's alleged tormentor.
The man I'd invited to Christmas dinners, birthday parties, and family vacations.
Melissa immediately wiped her cheeks.
"Ryan, listen to me.""
I raised one hand.
"Don't.""
Grant appeared in the bedroom doorway wearing a navy suit and carrying a black leather briefcase.
He stopped when he saw Daniel.
For a fraction of a second, his face revealed everything.
Then he smiled.
"Well, this is unexpected.""
I stood between him and the hidden passage.
"Get out.""
Grant looked at the open wall.
Then he glanced at Lily.
His smile disappeared.
"Ryan, you shouldn't have opened that.""
I almost laughed.
"You're right. I should have left my daughter to starve in there.""
Grant placed his briefcase on the dresser.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Then tell me what I'm missing.""
He glanced at Melissa.
She gave him a tiny shake of her head.
I noticed.
And suddenly, five years of little things began connecting.
The way Melissa always answered my phone when Grant called.
The way Grant insisted on handling every financial matter after Claire's death.
The way he discouraged me from looking through old company records.
The way Melissa became strangely nervous whenever I mentioned my first wife.
I stepped closer.
"How long have you known about Lily?""
Grant sighed.
"Long enough to know she's safer where she is.""
"Safer?""
I pointed toward the narrow cavity.
"Look at her!""
Lily was sitting on the floor, trying to hide behind Emma.
Her wrists were thin. Her cheeks were sunken. Her pink shirt hung from her shoulders like a blanket.
Grant barely glanced at her.
"She's a complicated situation.""
I hit him.
My fist connected with his jaw, sending him stumbling against the dresser.
Melissa screamed.
"RYAN!""
Grant touched his bleeding lip.
"Are you insane?""
"Say one more word about my daughter like she's a business problem.""
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
"Ryan. Not yet.""
I turned toward him.
"What do you mean, not yet?""
He reached inside his jacket and removed a small envelope.
"Claire gave me this before she died.""
My heart stopped.
"Why didn't you give it to me?""
"Because I couldn't find you.""
"You knew where I lived!""
"No, Ryan. I knew where you used to live. After Claire's funeral, Melissa and Grant changed your contact information, moved Lily, and told everyone I'd been arrested for fraud.""
I stared at him.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I spent three years trying to prove I wasn't involved. By the time I cleared my name, the people who had taken Lily had disappeared.""
He handed me the envelope.
My name was written across it in Claire's handwriting.
Ryan.
Just seeing those four letters made my knees weak.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a folded letter and a small silver key.
The letter began with a sentence I would never forget.
My darling Ryan, if you're reading this, someone has probably convinced you that I betrayed you.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
The room became painfully quiet.
I read.
I discovered financial transfers from Mitchell Construction to a company registered under Grant Parker's name. At first, I thought it was an accounting error. Then I found copies of forged contracts and payments to people who didn't exist.
I confronted Grant. He denied everything.
Two days later, someone broke into our house.
My fingers trembled.
I am frightened, Ryan. Not for myself. For our daughter.
The letter continued.
If anything happens to me, please don't trust the first person who offers to help you. The person closest to you may be the one who arranged everything.
I stopped reading.
Across the room, Grant was watching me.
His face had become unreadable.
I continued.
Daniel knows where I've hidden the original records. The key is for a safety deposit box at First National Bank. Everything you need is inside.
There is one more thing.
Lily has a small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear. If anyone claims she isn't ours, remember that.
I looked at Lily.
She slowly moved her hair away from her ear.
There it was.
A tiny crescent-shaped mark.
The same mark that appeared in the hospital photograph.
My daughter.
My little girl.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
"Claire," I whispered.
Then I looked at Grant.
"You knew.""
He didn't answer.
I stood.
"You knew she was alive.""
Grant rubbed his jaw.
"Ryan, you have no idea what you're involved in.""
"Then enlighten me.""
He glanced at Daniel.
"Your brother-in-law has been feeding you a story.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't try that again.""
Grant smiled coldly.
"Still pretending you're innocent, Daniel?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"At least I never locked a child in a wall.""
Melissa began sobbing.
"Please, both of you, stop.""
I turned toward her.
"Did you put her in there?""
Melissa shook her head.
"I didn't have a choice.""
"That's not an answer.""
She looked at Grant.
He gave her a warning stare.
I noticed.
"Melissa, look at me.""
She slowly raised her eyes.
"Who put my daughter behind that wall?""
Her lips trembled.
"I did.""
The room fell silent.
Emma gasped.
I felt as if someone had punched me in the chest.
"You?""
Melissa nodded, tears running down her face.
"I never wanted to hurt her.""
"How long?""
"Three years.""
Three years.
My daughter had spent three years inside a space barely large enough to crawl through.
I couldn't speak.
Melissa continued.
"At first, she stayed in the guest room. But she started asking questions. She wanted to know who her father was. She wanted to see you.""
I looked toward Lily.
"Why didn't you bring her to me?""
"Because Grant said you would take her away.""
I turned toward Grant.
He shrugged.
"She was a legal liability.""
I moved toward him again.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
"Let him talk.""
Grant sighed.
"Claire had evidence against us. She was planning to give it to the authorities. Melissa panicked. She believed if Claire disappeared, the investigation would end.""
Melissa shook her head.
"That's not what you promised me!""
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"Be quiet.""
I looked at Melissa.
"What did he promise you?""
She began crying harder.
"He said we could raise Lily. He said we could make her part of our family. He said you would never find out.""
I glanced at Emma.
My little girl was clinging to my trousers.
"Did you tell Emma to keep this secret?""
Melissa nodded.
"She saw Lily one day when I brought her food. I told her Lily was sick and needed to stay hidden.""
"She's four years old!""
"I know.""
"She's a child, Melissa!""
"I KNOW!""
Her scream echoed through the bedroom.
Then she covered her mouth.
Lily began trembling.
I immediately crouched.
"You're safe, sweetheart.""
She looked at me.
"Can I go outside?""
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"Yes.""
"Can I sleep in a bed?""
"Of course.""
"Can I eat dinner with Emma?""
I pulled her gently into my arms.
"You can eat whatever you want.""
For the first time, she didn't pull away.
She rested her tiny head against my chest.
Then she whispered something that made my heart shatter.
"Will you still love me if I broke your wall?""
I closed my eyes.
"No, baby. You could break every wall in this house, and I'd still love you.""
Daniel turned away, wiping his face.
But Grant wasn't crying.
He was watching the front door.
I noticed his right hand slipping inside his jacket.
"Don't move," I said.
He froze.
"What?""
I pointed toward his hand.
"Take it out.""
He slowly withdrew a black phone.
Then he smiled.
"You're too late, Ryan.""
He tapped the screen.
A message appeared.
And my phone immediately began vibrating.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Mr. Mitchell, this is Detective Harris. We need you to listen carefully. We've just received a report that your daughter has been found.""
I looked at Grant.
The detective continued.
"But there's something you need to know. Your wife reported you as the person responsible for her disappearance.""
I slowly turned toward Melissa.
She was staring at me.
Grant smiled.
May you like
Then the detective added:
"And Mr. Mitchell, we have a warrant for your arrest.""
