Amused

Chapter 5: The Grandfather Who Came to Silence Her

I arrived at the police station just after midnight.

Daniel was already there.

He sat in a small interview room with a paper cup of coffee between his hands. His jacket was folded over the chair beside him.

Detective Harris stood near a television mounted on the wall.

"Ryan," he said.

"Thanks for coming.""

I looked at the screen.

"Show me.""

Harris pressed a button.

The footage was grainy, black and white, and slightly distorted.

It showed my bedroom.

The timestamp indicated 11:43 p.m., eleven months earlier.

A man entered the room.

My father.

Richard Mitchell.

He was wearing the dark wool coat I had bought him for his sixty-fifth birthday.

He walked directly toward the closet.

Then he moved the storage boxes.

My breath caught.

He knew exactly where the panel was.

He pulled it open.

A tiny figure appeared in the darkness.

Lily.

She was younger-looking, thinner, and wearing a yellow sweater.

My father crouched.

Even without sound, I could see his mouth moving.

Harris paused the recording.

"There's audio.""

He pressed play.

My father's voice came through the speakers.

"Lily, sweetheart. It's Grandpa.""

The little girl moved backward.

"Where's Daddy?""

My father's face tightened.

"Your daddy is busy.""

"I want him.""

"You can't see him.""

"Why?""

"Because he doesn't want you.""

I felt my fingernails digging into my palms.

The recording continued.

Lily started crying.

"Please tell Daddy I miss him.""

My father leaned closer.

"Listen to me carefully. If you tell anyone you're here, you'll be sent somewhere far away. You'll never see Emma again.""

I covered my mouth.

The recording ended several seconds later.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the screen.

My father hadn't simply known about Lily.

He had personally threatened her.

He had stood in my bedroom and told my daughter that I didn't want her.

"How long did he stay?"" I asked.

"Forty-seven minutes," Harris replied.

"What did he do for forty-seven minutes?""

"We're still reviewing the complete footage.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"There's more.""

Harris nodded and changed the file.

Another video appeared.

This time, my father was sitting at my desk.

He opened a folder and removed several documents.

One of them looked exactly like the guardianship agreement I'd received.

He signed something.

Then he took out his phone.

The audio began.

"Grant, it's Richard. The girl is still there. Melissa is becoming unreliable. We need to finalize the transfer before Ryan starts asking questions.""

I looked at Daniel.

He looked equally horrified.

The recording continued.

"Yes. I understand the trust agreement. But I want the original records destroyed. Claire made copies, and we don't know how many.""

My father's voice became quieter.

"Don't worry about Daniel. He'll never find them.""

Harris paused the video.

I stood up.

"Where was this footage stored?""

"In an old local security server. Your house had been connected to it years ago. The recording was automatically backed up.""

"Can you give me a copy?""

"Eventually. First, we need to establish the chain of custody.""

I barely heard him.

My father had known.

My father had been involved.

And he had died two years ago without ever telling me the truth.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Ryan, there's something I should have told you earlier.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"After Claire died, I received a package.""

"What package?""

"A box containing several documents and a photograph of Lily. The letter said she was being cared for by a trusted family member.""

I stared at him.

"Who sent it?""

"I didn't know. But there was a return address connected to Richard's old office.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because the package also contained a threat.""

Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

He placed it on the table.

I opened it.

If you contact Ryan Mitchell or attempt to locate the child, the truth about Claire's death will become your responsibility.

At the bottom was a handwritten signature.

Richard Mitchell.

I dropped the paper.

Daniel looked at me.

"I thought he was protecting you.""

"You thought?""

"I was afraid, Ryan. I had already lost my sister. I didn't know who I could trust.""

I paced toward the window.

My father had manipulated Daniel.

He had manipulated Melissa.

He had manipulated me.

But there was one thing I couldn't understand.

Why had he done it?

He was already wealthy.

The company was successful.

What could he possibly have gained by hiding his own granddaughter?

Detective Harris answered before I asked.

"Money.""

He placed a financial report on the table.

"Your company transferred approximately $3.8 million into a series of private investment accounts over four years. Most of the transactions were authorized using your father's credentials.""

I shook my head.

"That money was supposed to fund our expansion projects.""

"Some of it did. Most disappeared.""

"Who benefited?""

Harris pointed to several names.

"Grant Parker. Richard Mitchell. And an offshore company registered under a name connected to your father's estate.""

I stared at the report.

"How was Lily involved?""

Harris folded his arms.

"Claire discovered the accounts. She also discovered that a trust had been established using your unborn daughter's identity. The trust was designed to control certain assets if you became legally incapacitated or disappeared.""

I frowned.

"Why would they need a baby for that?""

"Because the trust was connected to an insurance arrangement and several property holdings. The child was listed as a beneficiary. Whoever controlled her guardianship could influence those assets.""

I slowly sat down.

"So they used my daughter.""

"That's what it appears.""

Daniel opened the black notebook.

"There's something else. Claire suspected Richard was planning to transfer the company itself.""

Harris looked at him.

"Do you have proof?""

Daniel nodded.

"Not yet. But I know where Claire hid the originals.""

I remembered what he'd told me at the house.

The recording.

"Where?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father's old workshop.""

My father had owned a small property outside town.

It was a brick building behind an abandoned lumber yard, surrounded by tall grass and rusted fencing.

I hadn't visited it since his funeral.

The next morning, Daniel and I drove there with a detective.

The workshop smelled of dust, engine oil, and old wood.

My father's tools were still hanging on the wall.

His workbench remained exactly as he'd left it.

I ran my fingers over a faded measuring tape.

For a moment, I remembered being twelve years old, standing beside him while he showed me how to measure a beam.

"Measure twice, cut once," he'd always said.

I almost laughed.

He had taught me how to build things.

But he'd spent years destroying my family.

Daniel approached an old metal cabinet.

"Claire said he kept the important records somewhere that reminded him of your childhood.""

I looked around.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel pointed toward a wooden model house on the top shelf.

It was the first house my father and I had built together when I was fourteen.

The roof was crooked.

One window was missing.

I reached up and lifted it.

Something rattled inside.

I turned it over.

A small compartment had been cut into the base.

Inside was a cassette tape and a folded photograph.

The photograph showed Claire holding newborn Lily.

On the back, she'd written:

For Ryan. When he is finally ready to know.

My hands trembled.

I placed the cassette on the workbench.

The detective found an old player in a storage cabinet.

A few seconds of static filled the workshop.

Then Claire's voice emerged.

"Ryan, my love.""

I closed my eyes.

It was her.

Exactly as I remembered.

Soft.

Warm.

A little breathless.

"If you're hearing this, something has happened to me. And I need you to understand that I never stopped fighting for our daughter.""

I gripped the edge of the workbench.

"Your father knows about the money. He helped Grant establish the accounts. But I don't believe he understands how far Grant is willing to go.""

A pause.

Then Claire continued.

"Richard came to see me yesterday. He told me that if I handed over the original financial records, Lily and I would be left alone.""

I felt sick.

"He said he wanted to protect the family. I believed him once. I don't anymore.""

Daniel lowered his head.

The recording crackled.

Then Claire said something that made my entire body go cold.

"Ryan, there's something I haven't told you about your father. The night we met with him, he confessed that he had already arranged for Lily to be taken away.""

I stared at the cassette player.

Claire's voice trembled.

"He said the child was part of a deal. And when I asked him who had made the deal, he gave me a name.""

A long silence followed.

Then Claire whispered:

"It was someone in your own family.""

The tape clicked.

The detective pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

"That's it?"" I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Claire said there was a second tape.""

"Where?""

He pointed toward the wooden model house.

I turned it over again.

A second compartment was hidden beneath the roof.

Inside was another cassette.

This one had a label.

THE NIGHT OF THE ACCIDENT.

I placed it in the player.

Static.

A door closing.

Then my father's voice.

"Claire, you need to understand. I didn't want it to happen this way.""

Claire answered.

"You arranged it.""

My father sighed.

"Grant went too far.""

"He's your partner, Richard. You gave him the money.""

"I was trying to save the company.""

"You were trying to save yourself.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then my father's voice became louder.

"Do you think Ryan can survive knowing what I've done? Do you think he'll forgive me when he finds out what happened to his mother?""

I froze.

My mother had died when I was sixteen.

A heart attack, I'd always been told.

Claire's voice sounded frightened.

"What are you talking about?""

My father whispered something.

The recording became distorted.

Then Claire spoke again.

"You're lying. You're saying Ryan's mother didn't die naturally?""

My hands went numb.

The tape continued.

"Richard, what did you do?""

My father answered with five words.

Words that changed everything.

"Your mother-in-law knew the truth.""

I stopped breathing.

Claire's mother.

My former mother-in-law.

Margaret.

The woman who had been sending me birthday cards for five years.

The woman who had held Emma as a baby.

The woman who had visited our home only two months earlier.

The recording ended with Claire screaming.

Then came a sound like a door slamming.

The workshop fell silent.

Daniel looked at me.

"Ryan...""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

My phone rang.

Margaret's name appeared on the screen.

I stared at it for several seconds before answering.

"Hello?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Ryan, sweetheart. I heard what happened.""

I glanced at Daniel.

"How?""

"I saw the police cars at your house yesterday.""

I said nothing.

Then Margaret whispered:

"Please don't listen to that recording.""

My blood turned cold.

"How do you know about the recording?""

She began crying.

"Because I was there that night, Ryan.""

I closed my eyes.

"What night?""

"The night Claire died.""

I gripped the phone.

"Margaret, tell me what happened.""

She took a shaky breath.

May you like

Then she said:

"Your father didn't arrange Claire's accident alone. I helped him.""
