Chapter 1: The Man Who Knew My Dead Wife
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The stranger stood inside the narrow passage, his shoulders nearly brushing both walls. He was perhaps sixty years old, with silver hair, a deeply lined face, and a brown leather jacket that looked older than my marriage.
In his right hand was the photograph.
My first wife, Claire, stood in the center, smiling at the camera. Beside her was a little girl wearing a pink dress.
The same girl who had been living behind my bedroom wall.
The same girl who had just called me Daddy.
I stepped between the stranger and the children.
"Who are you?""
The man looked past me toward the little girl.
"Her name is Lily.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"How do you know her name?""
"Because I've been looking for her for five years.""
Melissa suddenly stood up.
"Get out.""
The stranger didn't even look at her.
"Not this time, Melissa.""
My wife grabbed my arm.
"Ryan, don't listen to him. He's a liar.""
I turned toward her.
"Then explain the child.""
Melissa's mouth opened, but nothing came out.
The little girl began coughing. It was a dry, painful sound that seemed to come from deep inside her chest.
I immediately crouched beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart. Can you stand?""
She shook her head.
I reached for her, but she flinched so violently that her back struck the wooden wall.
"Please don't put me back.""
Those five words nearly brought me to my knees.
"Nobody is putting you anywhere," I whispered.
"I promise.""
She stared at me with enormous brown eyes.
"Mommy said Daddy didn't want me.""
My throat closed.
Behind me, Melissa made a strange choking sound.
"Ryan, she's been told things. She's confused.""
I slowly turned.
"Who told her that?""
Melissa wiped her face.
"Please, let's talk privately.""
"No. We're talking right here.""
The stranger stepped forward.
"My name is Daniel Hayes. I was Claire's older brother.""
I stared at him.
Claire had mentioned a brother exactly twice during our marriage. She'd told me he lived somewhere in Oregon and that they hadn't spoken in years.
I'd never met him.
"You told me Claire was an only child," I said to Melissa.
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"Of course she did. It was easier that way.""
Melissa pointed toward the front door.
"Get out of my house!""
Daniel raised the photograph.
"Your house? That's interesting. Because this photograph was taken in a hospital, three days after Lily was born. And the woman holding her is my sister.""
I looked at the picture again.
Claire was wearing a hospital gown. She looked exhausted but happy. Her hand rested protectively on the baby's back.
I recognized the date written in the bottom corner.
Five years ago.
Five years ago, Claire had supposedly died in a car accident.
Five years ago, Melissa had entered my life.
My hands began shaking.
"Daniel, what are you saying?""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Your daughter didn't die with your first wife, Ryan. She survived.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the edge of the closet door.
"That's impossible.""
"I wish it were.""
"Claire died before the baby was born.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's what Melissa told you.""
My wife suddenly screamed.
"STOP!""
Emma began crying again.
I looked at Melissa.
"Tell me the truth.""
She backed toward the dresser.
"Ryan, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
"She wasn't supposed to be here.""
The words came out so quietly that I almost didn't hear them.
I stared at her.
"What?""
Melissa pressed both hands against her mouth.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Tell him about the hospital, Melissa. Tell him about the adoption papers.""
My wife shook her head violently.
"Those papers were fake.""
"Some of them were," Daniel replied.
"But the birth certificate wasn't.""
I turned toward him.
"Adoption?""
Daniel nodded.
"After Claire died, you were told the baby had died too. But Lily was transferred to a private medical facility. Melissa was working there at the time.""
I felt a cold sensation crawl up my spine.
Melissa had been a pediatric nurse when I'd met her.
She'd told me she left hospital work because the emotional demands were too much.
I had believed her.
Daniel continued.
"She took the baby. At first, she claimed she was protecting her. Then she disappeared.""
"Why would she do that?""
"Money," he answered.
"And something much worse.""
Melissa suddenly lunged toward the photograph.
Daniel pulled it away.
"Don't you dare.""
"Give it to me!""
"No.""
I stepped between them.
"Enough! What happened to my daughter?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your first wife left instructions. If anything happened to her, Lily was supposed to be raised by you and her brother. But Melissa intercepted the hospital records. She convinced everyone that the child had died.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Why?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.
"Because Claire had discovered that someone was stealing money from your company.""
My construction company.
Mitchell Construction.
The company I'd built from three employees and a borrowed truck into a business worth several million dollars.
I looked at Melissa.
She was staring at the carpet.
"Was it you?""
She shook her head.
"Ryan, I never stole from you.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Not directly.""
He pulled another photograph from his jacket.
This one showed Melissa standing outside a hospital entrance with a man.
The man had his arm around her waist.
I recognized him immediately.
Grant Parker.
My company's chief financial officer.
My closest friend.
The man who had stood beside me at Claire's funeral and promised to help me rebuild my life.
I stared at the picture.
"When was this taken?""
"Six months before Claire died," Daniel replied.
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Why would my wife be meeting Grant?""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Because Grant wasn't just stealing from your company. He was helping Melissa arrange something involving your daughter.""
Behind me, Lily whispered something.
I turned.
She was holding the dirty piece of bread against her chest.
"Mommy said Mr. Grant would come back tonight.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What did you say, sweetheart?""
She looked toward the bedroom door.
"Mr. Grant said I was going to be moved again.""
A car door slammed outside.
Daniel looked at the window.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"He's already here.""
