Amused

Chapter 9: The Choice My Grandfather Made

I stared at the signature until the letters blurred.

Richard Hale.

The name sat at the bottom of my grandfather's will like a secret that had been waiting decades to be discovered.

My mind struggled to understand.

Richard wasn't my family.

He wasn't someone I had known my entire life.

He was the father of the man who had helped destroy my reputation.

The man who had sat at the head table while my sister laughed at me.

The man who had looked at me and somehow recognized something everyone else had ignored.

But why?

Why would my grandfather trust him?

Richard stepped closer.

His face was pale.

"I didn't know.""

The words came out quietly.

I looked at him.

"You didn't know your name was there?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Claire watched him carefully.

"I believe you.""

Richard looked at her.

"How?""

"Because Marcus told me.""

The name changed everything.

Dr. Marcus Bell.

The man who had left clues.

The man who had tried to protect me.

The man who had died before he could explain.

Claire opened the folder again and pulled out another document.

"This was found in Marcus's personal files.""

Richard took it.

His hands trembled slightly as he read.

I watched his face change.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then sadness.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Your grandfather wrote to Marcus.""

"About what?""

Richard handed me the paper.

The handwriting was old, but familiar.

My grandfather's.

Jenna,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

I have always known that money changes people.

Sometimes it reveals who they are.

Sometimes it creates someone they were never meant to become.

I am trusting Richard Hale because he understands one thing your father does not.

Money is not a way to control family.

It is a way to protect them.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I kept reading.

Your father loves you, but he has confused love with ownership.

He believes protecting you means making decisions for you.

Richard understands that a person must be allowed to choose their own life.

I stopped.

Because those words felt like my grandfather was speaking directly to me.

A person must be allowed to choose their own life.

How many years had I spent trying to earn permission to exist?

How many years had I apologized for becoming myself?

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the ground.

And for once, he didn't look angry.

He looked ashamed.

Claire continued.

"Marcus discovered what Diane and James were planning.""

I looked at her.

"My father and stepmother?""

She nodded.

"They believed if they could prove you were irresponsible, unstable, or financially incapable, they could challenge the trust.""

Richard looked up.

"And my mother?""

Claire sighed.

"Your mother-in-law was involved because she wanted access to the business connections attached to the trust.""

Richard closed his eyes.

"I should have seen it.""

Claire shook her head.

"She was careful.""

I looked at the documents.

"And Dr. Bell?""

Claire's expression softened.

"Marcus spent years trying to fix what happened.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he was afraid.""

That surprised me.

"Afraid of what?""

"That they would come after you again.""

The answer hurt.

Because it meant someone had protected me from the shadows.

Someone had fought for me while I thought I was alone.

Claire looked at me.

"He wanted to tell you everything.""

My throat tightened.

"When?""

"The week he died.""

The words were quiet.

"He planned to meet you.""

I looked at Richard.

"Why didn't he?""

Nobody answered.

They didn't need to.

Because we all knew.

Something happened.

Something stopped him.

Claire took a deep breath.

"I was supposed to deliver the documents to you.""

I looked at her.

"Then why didn't you?""

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was scared.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I thought they would come after me.""

"And they did.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?""

Claire looked toward my father.

Then Felicity.

Then Ethan.

But she didn't answer.

Not immediately.

"Someone inside your family.""

My father looked up.

"I told you everything.""

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"No.""

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

"You told her what you wanted her to know.""

My father went silent.

My heart sank.

"There's more.""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

Richard looked at her.

"What else?""

Claire reached into the folder again.

This time, she pulled out a photograph.

An old photograph.

My grandfather stood beside a younger Richard.

And beside them was another person.

A woman.

I recognized her immediately.

Diane.

My stepmother.

But there was something else.

On the back of the photo was a date.

And a handwritten note.

Three years before my grandfather died.

I turned the picture over.

The note was short.

*They know about Jenna. Keep her safe.*

My hands shook.

"They?""

Claire nodded.

"Your grandfather discovered Diane wasn't acting alone.""

I looked at her.

"Who was with her?""

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

"The person who helped her create the entire plan.""

I waited.

"Who?""

Claire looked at my father.

And I saw him close his eyes.

Like he already knew.

"James.""

My father.

Again.

But this time, something was different.

Because he didn't deny it.

He didn't argue.

He didn't defend himself.

He just stood there.

Broken.

"You knew.""

My father looked at me.

"I knew some of it.""

My voice became cold.

"Some?""

He swallowed.

"I knew Diane was trying to access the trust.""

"And?""

"I thought I could control it.""

I stared.

"You thought you could control it?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"I thought I could stop it before you got hurt.""

The anger came back.

"By letting them hurt me?""

"No.""

"That's exactly what you did.""

He looked away.

I stepped closer.

"Every time someone attacked me, you chose the easiest path.""

His eyes closed.

"I was wrong.""

The apology came too late.

Not because apologies don't matter.

But because some wounds are created by years of choices.

Not one mistake.

"I should have protected you.""

I looked at him.

"Yes.""

The word was simple.

And painful.

"You should have.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire's phone rang.

Everyone turned.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

"What?""

She answered.

"Hello?""

A few seconds passed.

Then her face went pale.

"Are you sure?""

She looked at me.

And my stomach dropped.

"What happened?""

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

"The police found something.""

Richard stepped forward.

"What?""

Claire looked at the folder in my hands.

Then at me.

"They found Marcus Bell's missing files.""

My heart started racing.

"But he's been dead for months.""

"I know.""

"Where were they?""

Claire hesitated.

"In a storage unit.""

"Whose?""

She looked at Richard.

Then me.

"Registered under Jenna Morgan.""

The world went silent.

"What?""

Claire shook her head.

"Someone rented the unit using your identity.""

Richard immediately understood.

"They planted the evidence.""

Claire nodded.

"And now they want everyone to believe Jenna was involved.""

My father's face changed.

"No.""

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

"No, this is different.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

Because for the first time tonight...

My father looked truly terrified.

"Because whoever is doing this isn't trying to take the trust anymore.""

A pause.

"They're trying to make sure Jenna takes the blame for Marcus's death.""

The night suddenly felt colder.

Three years ago, they tried to destroy my career.

Tonight, they were trying to destroy my freedom.

And maybe my life.

Claire looked at me.

"Jenna.""

I looked at her.

"Yes?""

She whispered:

"Someone knew we would find the will.""

Richard's face tightened.

"How?""

Claire looked toward the road.

At the darkness beyond the lights.

Then she said:

"Because the person who sent the warning message...""

A pause.

"...is standing outside right now.""

Everyone turned.

At the end of the driveway, beneath the dim light, a figure stood beside a parked car.

Watching us.

Waiting.

And then the person stepped forward.

The face came into view.

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew him.

Everyone did.

And he wasn't a stranger.

May you like

He was the last person I expected.

Dr. Marcus Bell.
