Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The ballroom noise faded into something distant and meaningless.

The laughter.

The music.

The clinking glasses.

All of it disappeared beneath one sentence.

Why did you never tell anyone what happened three years ago?

My eyes stayed fixed on the folded paper in Richard Hale's hand.

I knew that handwriting.

I knew the sharp angle of the letters.

I knew the way the writer pressed harder on certain words when they were angry.

Because I had seen it hundreds of times.

It belonged to Felicity.

My sister.

"Where did you get that?"" I whispered.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He studied my face, as if trying to understand why I looked more afraid than surprised.

"Before I show you what's inside," he said, "I need you to answer my question.""

I swallowed.

"Which question?""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

I looked away.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because telling the truth had never felt simple in my family.

People like to say honesty sets you free.

They don't tell you what happens when the people closest to you punish you for being honest.

"I didn't think anyone would believe me," I said.

Richard's expression changed slightly.

Not shock.

Recognition.

Like my answer confirmed something he already suspected.

"That is exactly what I was afraid of.""

I looked back at him.

"What does that mean?""

Before he could respond, someone called from across the room.

"Richard!""

We both turned.

Ethan stood near the dance floor, smiling.

His smile looked normal.

Happy.

The kind of smile a groom was supposed to wear.

But something about it made my stomach tighten.

Richard glanced at his son.

Then at the paper.

Then back at me.

"I can't talk here.""

I stood slowly.

"Then where?""

He looked toward the hallway near the ballroom entrance.

"Five minutes. Outside.""

I followed him, but before we reached the door, Felicity appeared.

Perfect timing.

She always had that ability.

To appear exactly when something threatened her control.

"Everything okay?"" she asked.

Her eyes moved between me and Richard.

There was a brief flash of panic.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Richard saw it too.

"Everything is fine," he said.

Felicity smiled.

"Of course.""

She looked at me.

"Jenna, are you bothering Richard?""

The question was wrapped in sweetness.

But the accusation underneath was clear.

I felt heat rise in my chest.

"No.""

Richard's voice was calm.

"Actually, Jenna and I were having a conversation.""

Felicity laughed softly.

"Oh. About what?""

Richard didn't answer.

And that silence was the first time I saw Felicity lose control.

Only for a second.

But it happened.

Her fingers tightened around her champagne glass.

Then she smiled again.

"Well, don't keep her too long. I need her for family photos.""

I almost laughed.

Family photos.

The same photos where I would probably stand at the edge.

The same photos where everyone would pretend we were closer than we were.

Richard looked at her.

"She can spare five minutes.""

Something in his tone made Felicity step back.

She wasn't used to people disagreeing with her.

Not openly.

Not in front of others.

"Sure," she said.

Then she walked away.

Richard waited until she disappeared into the crowd.

Then he opened the door to the quiet hallway outside.

The second we stepped away from the reception, the silence felt heavy.

The ballroom doors closed behind us.

Suddenly, it was just me and him.

And a secret from three years ago.

Richard unfolded the paper.

"I found this while going through old documents.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"What kind of documents?""

"Documents from Ethan's college years.""

I stared at him.

"Why would my name be in his college documents?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Because three years ago, my son was involved in an accident.""

The memory hit me instantly.

Not like a thought.

Like a physical blow.

A cold hospital hallway.

The smell of antiseptic.

A young man covered in blood.

A phone call at two in the morning.

My hands shaking as I tried to keep someone alive.

I closed my eyes.

"I don't understand.""

Richard looked down at the paper.

"My son told me a different version of that night.""

My heart sank.

"What version?""

"That you made a mistake.""

The hallway seemed to tilt.

I stared at him.

"He told you that?""

Richard nodded.

"He said you were careless. That you panicked. That you almost caused him permanent damage.""

I couldn't speak.

Because I remembered exactly what happened.

And I remembered how hard I had worked to save him.

Ethan Hale had come into the emergency room after a serious car accident.

He was unconscious.

His blood pressure was dropping.

His injuries were severe.

I wasn't his nurse because I knew him.

I was his nurse because I was assigned to him.

I did my job.

I followed protocol.

I stayed with him through the worst hours of his life.

And afterward, when he recovered, he thanked me.

At least, I thought he did.

Until Felicity called me.

Until she told me Ethan's family was angry.

Until she told me I had embarrassed everyone.

Until she told me I needed to stay quiet.

"You believed him?"" I asked.

Richard looked ashamed.

"At first.""

That hurt more than I expected.

Because Richard wasn't the one who destroyed me.

But his son was.

And he had believed him.

"I had no reason not to," Richard continued.

"Ethan was my son. He was scared. He was injured. He said you were trying to cover up your mistake.""

I looked down.

My hands were trembling.

"I didn't make a mistake.""

"I know.""

The certainty in his voice made me look up.

He handed me the paper.

"I know because I found the hospital records.""

I took it.

The page was a copy of a medical report.

My name was printed near the bottom.

Then I saw something else.

A signature.

A signature that wasn't mine.

My breathing stopped.

"This isn't possible.""

Richard watched me carefully.

"What?""

I pointed.

"This authorization form.""

His face tightened.

"Yes.""

I looked closer.

The signature belonged to a physician who had not been working that night.

A doctor who had never been in the room.

A signature that approved changes to the medical report after the incident.

Someone had altered the records.

Someone had tried to make it look like I had done something wrong.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

The phone calls.

The accusations.

The way Felicity had avoided me afterward.

The way she kept telling me not to "make things worse.""

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what happened.

"Why are you showing me this?"" I asked.

Richard was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

"Because I owe you an apology.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For believing my son before I believed the evidence.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because nobody had apologized.

Not once.

Not my father.

Not Diane.

Not Felicity.

Everyone had simply moved on.

Like my pain was something inconvenient.

Richard continued.

"I also owe you an explanation.""

I waited.

"Felicity didn't just know about this.""

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

Inside, music was playing.

The wedding was continuing.

My sister was smiling.

Taking pictures.

Receiving congratulations.

Like she hadn't spent years destroying my reputation.

Richard lowered his voice.

"She was the person who gave Ethan the idea to blame you.""

I felt the blood leave my face.

"No.""

"I have proof.""

"No.""

The word came out before I could stop it.

Because some truths are harder to accept than lies.

I could believe Felicity was cruel.

I could believe she was selfish.

But this?

This was different.

Richard reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out his phone.

"I received a message from an unknown number two weeks ago.""

He unlocked the screen.

"I almost ignored it.""

He turned the phone toward me.

The message was short.

But the sender's name was visible.

And the moment I saw it, my entire body froze.

Because it wasn't Felicity.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't anyone I expected.

It was from someone who had been dead for six months.

Richard watched my reaction.

"Jenna...""

I couldn't look away from the screen.

The impossible message sat there.

Waiting.

May you like

And beneath it was one sentence:

*"You need to know what Felicity did to Jenna.""*
