Amused

Chapter 4: The Truth She Buried

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The four of us stood in that quiet hallway, surrounded by the distant sound of celebration.

A wedding was happening ten feet away.

People were dancing.

People were smiling.

People were raising glasses and making promises about forever.

And yet, behind a closed door, the truth about our family was finally standing in the light.

Felicity was the first to recover.

She laughed.

A small, nervous laugh.

The kind people make when they are trying to convince everyone, including themselves, that nothing is wrong.

"I think everyone is misunderstanding something.""

Richard didn't blink.

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"You're trying to make everyone misunderstand.""

Her face tightened.

"Dad, I don't know what Jenna told you, but—"

"I didn't tell him anything.""

My own voice surprised me.

Because for years, I had stayed quiet.

I had swallowed every insult.

Every accusation.

Every moment where I was treated like I was less important.

But standing there, watching her prepare another lie, something inside me finally broke.

"I didn't tell him anything," I repeated.

Felicity looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, she looked uncertain.

"You always do this," she whispered.

I frowned.

"Do what?""

"Make people think you're innocent.""

The words were so familiar that they almost felt rehearsed.

Almost.

Because I had heard versions of them for years.

You are too sensitive.

You misunderstood.

You are making things dramatic.

You are remembering it wrong.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

Richard stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Felicity looked at him.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Richard held up his phone.

"Explain why Dr. Marcus Bell sent me a message before he died.""

Her eyes dropped.

That was the moment.

The exact moment I knew the truth was bigger than I imagined.

Because Felicity wasn't confused.

She wasn't offended.

She wasn't shocked.

She was afraid.

"Ethan," she said quietly.

Her husband looked at her.

And suddenly, they weren't the perfect couple from the photographs.

They were two people caught in something they couldn't escape.

"Tell them," Felicity said.

Ethan's expression changed.

"What?""

"Tell them what happened.""

The betrayal in his eyes was immediate.

"You said you handled it.""

The hallway became completely silent.

I looked between them.

Handled it.

Those two words carried years of pain.

Richard's face hardened.

"What did you handle?""

Felicity realized her mistake too late.

"I didn't mean—"

"No.""

Richard raised his voice slightly.

"You don't get to fix this with another excuse.""

A few seconds passed.

Then Ethan sat down on the bench near the wall.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying something heavy and pretending it wasn't there.

"I never wanted this to happen.""

I stared at him.

"That's what everyone says after they hurt someone.""

His eyes met mine.

"I was scared.""

"You already said that.""

"I was twenty-six.""

"So was I.""

The answer came immediately.

And it silenced him.

Because I was there too.

I was young.

I was trying to build a career.

I was trying to prove myself.

And while he was afraid of losing his reputation, I was losing mine.

Richard crossed his arms.

"Start from the beginning.""

Ethan looked at Felicity.

She shook her head slightly.

A warning.

A command.

Something only they understood.

Richard noticed.

"Do not look at her.""

Ethan looked down.

"I had complications after the accident.""

I nodded.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

The words annoyed me.

"What does that mean?""

"It means there were things you didn't know.""

I stared at him.

"Then tell me.""

He took a deep breath.

"After surgery, I had memory problems.""

I stayed silent.

He continued.

"I couldn't remember everything from the accident. I was confused. My parents were asking questions. The hospital was asking questions.""

His fingers tightened.

"And then Felicity came to see me.""

I looked at my sister.

She didn't move.

"She told me what happened.""

My stomach sank.

"What did she tell you?""

Ethan swallowed.

"She said you were responsible.""

The anger that rose inside me was sharp and immediate.

"She told you I caused your injuries?""

"Yes.""

Richard looked at Felicity.

"Why?""

Felicity crossed her arms.

"Because I was trying to protect him.""

I almost laughed.

"Protect him?""

She looked at me.

"You don't understand.""

"No, I understand perfectly.""

"You don't!""

Her voice finally cracked.

The perfect bride disappeared.

The carefully controlled woman disappeared.

For the first time, I saw the person underneath.

Someone desperate to hold onto a story.

"I was there when he woke up," she said.

"I saw how scared he was.""

"And?""

"And you were the easiest person to blame.""

The words hit harder because she said them like they were obvious.

Like my life had simply been the easiest thing to sacrifice.

I stared at her.

"You knew I saved him.""

Her silence answered.

"You knew.""

Felicity looked away.

Richard's voice was quiet.

"You let your sister take the blame for something she didn't do.""

Felicity shook her head.

"She didn't lose anything.""

I felt something inside me go completely still.

"What?""

She looked back at me.

"You still had your job.""

The hallway blurred for a second.

My job.

That was all she saw.

Not the nights I couldn't sleep.

Not the patients who asked if I was dangerous.

Not the investigation that followed.

Not the whispers at work.

Not the way I started questioning every decision I made.

"You destroyed my reputation.""

"I didn't.""

"You did.""

"No, Jenna.""

She stepped closer.

"You did that yourself.""

Richard immediately moved between us.

"Enough.""

But Felicity continued.

"She always wanted to be the good one.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Ever since we were kids.""

Her voice became colder.

"You were always the one everyone praised for being responsible. The smart one. The hardworking one.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You were jealous?""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Then she corrected herself.

"Maybe.""

A strange silence followed.

Because it was the first honest thing she had said all night.

Felicity looked toward the ballroom.

"I was tired of being compared to you.""

I almost smiled.

Because nobody had ever compared us that way.

Not from my perspective.

Felicity had always been the favorite.

The beautiful one.

The successful one.

The one my father bragged about.

"You had everything," I whispered.

She looked at me.

"No, Jenna.""

Her eyes hardened.

"You had something I never had.""

"What?""

"People trusted you.""

The confession was almost impossible to understand.

Because I had spent years believing nobody saw me.

And apparently, my sister had spent years believing everyone did.

Richard looked at Ethan.

"And the medical records?""

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I didn't change them.""

"Then who did?""

Nobody answered.

But the silence moved toward Felicity.

Slowly.

Like a shadow.

I looked at her.

"Who changed them?""

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not of us.

Of someone else.

Richard noticed.

"Felicity.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"You have to.""

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then back at me.

And the fear in her eyes made my skin crawl.

"It wasn't supposed to go this far.""

My heart started pounding.

"What wasn't?""

She didn't answer.

Richard stepped closer.

"Who helped you?""

Felicity whispered:

"I didn't do it alone.""

The words landed like a bomb.

Ethan looked at her.

"What are you saying?""

She looked at her husband.

And for the first time that night, I saw her regret something.

Not hurting me.

Not lying.

Something else.

"Ethan...""

He stood.

"What?""

Her voice became barely audible.

"The person who changed the records...""

She looked at me.

Then at Richard.

Then finally at Ethan.

"...was someone in your family.""

Nobody spoke.

The hallway lights hummed above us.

The wedding music continued.

And somewhere inside that beautiful ballroom, one hundred and twenty guests were still celebrating a marriage built on a secret.

Richard's face turned pale.

"My family?""

Felicity nodded slowly.

Then she said the one name I never expected.

"The person who erased Jenna's name from those records...""

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

"...was your mother.""
