Chapter 5: The Woman Who Changed Everything
For a few seconds, I thought I had heard her wrong.
The hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of quiet that comes right before something breaks.
Richard stared at Felicity.
"My mother?""
His voice wasn't angry.
That almost made it worse.
He sounded confused.
Like the world had shifted beneath his feet and he was still trying to find solid ground.
Felicity nodded.
Slowly.
"She helped.""
Ethan looked at his wife like he was seeing her for the first time.
"What are you saying?""
Felicity's eyes filled with panic.
"I didn't know what she was going to do.""
"But you asked her for help.""
The words came from Richard.
Not a question.
A fact.
Felicity looked down.
And that was enough.
Richard closed his eyes.
A long breath escaped him.
His mother.
The person who raised him.
The person he trusted.
The person who had sat at the head table earlier and smiled for photographs.
She had been part of the lie.
I felt dizzy.
Because the truth wasn't getting smaller.
It was spreading.
Every time I thought I had reached the center of it, there was another layer underneath.
Another person who had decided my life was acceptable damage.
"Why?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
I looked directly at Felicity.
"Why would she do that?""
Felicity looked uncomfortable.
"Because she thought it was the best solution.""
The anger that rose inside me was immediate.
"The best solution?""
Her eyes met mine.
"She thought Ethan's future was at risk.""
"And mine wasn't?""
She didn't respond.
That silence was becoming her favorite answer.
Richard stepped closer.
"My mother is eighty-one years old.""
Felicity looked at him.
"I know.""
"She is not a doctor.""
"I know.""
"She had no right to touch medical records.""
"I know.""
His voice hardened.
"Then why?""
Felicity wrapped her arms around herself.
"Because she believed Ethan.""
I looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I wanted him to deny it.
I wanted him to say he never asked for any of this.
But he didn't.
He just stood there.
Silent.
"Did you know?"" I asked him.
He didn't answer.
"Ethan.""
His eyes finally met mine.
"Not at first.""
I waited.
"Then when?""
He looked down.
"After.""
My chest tightened.
"After what?""
"After the records changed.""
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
"You knew someone altered my records.""
"Yes.""
"And you did nothing.""
His silence was the answer.
I nodded slowly.
A strange calm came over me.
Sometimes anger is loud.
Sometimes it burns.
But sometimes it becomes something colder.
Something that makes everything clear.
"You let me believe I failed.""
"I was scared.""
I laughed quietly.
"There it is again.""
He looked hurt.
"I was scared.""
"You keep saying that like fear excuses everything.""
"I was injured.""
"And I was destroyed.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
"I lost my confidence. I questioned myself every day. I walked into the hospital wondering if I was actually good enough to be there.""
My voice shook.
"But you got to go home.""
Ethan looked away.
"I didn't know what to do.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You knew exactly what to do.""
He looked at me.
"You chose silence.""
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing left to argue.
Silence was a choice.
A decision.
A weapon.
The ballroom doors opened suddenly.
A wedding coordinator stepped out.
"There you are! The photographer is looking for the family.""
She stopped when she saw our faces.
The tension was obvious.
"I'm sorry.""
Richard turned.
"Cancel the photos.""
The coordinator blinked.
"What?""
"Cancel them.""
"But the guests—"
"I said cancel them.""
She nodded quickly and disappeared.
I almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because for the first time tonight, someone had protected my place in the room.
Not hidden me.
Protected me.
Felicity looked toward the ballroom.
"But people will notice.""
Richard looked at her.
"Good.""
The word shocked her.
"Good?""
"Yes.""
His voice was quiet.
"Maybe people should notice.""
Felicity's face changed.
"You can't do this.""
"Do what?""
"Destroy everything.""
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said:
"No, Felicity.""
His voice lowered.
"You already did.""
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it wasn't about the wedding.
It wasn't about embarrassment.
It was about what happened when someone spent years protecting an image instead of protecting people.
Richard turned to me.
"Jenna, there is something else you need to see.""
I hesitated.
"What?""
He pulled out his phone again.
"There was another message.""
My stomach tightened.
"From Dr. Bell?""
He nodded.
"He scheduled it to send after his death.""
A chill moved through me.
"What did it say?""
Richard looked at the screen.
"I didn't want to show you until I understood the situation.""
"Show me.""
He handed me the phone.
The message was longer this time.
My hands shook as I read.
Jenna,
If you are reading this, it means I didn't get the chance to tell you myself.
I am sorry.
I should have protected you.
I should have spoken sooner.
The night Ethan Hale was brought into the emergency department, you did everything correctly. You saved his life.
But afterward, someone pressured the hospital administration to investigate you.
Someone wanted your name attached to the mistake.
I refused to sign the false report.
That is why they came after me.
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Richard.
"What does that mean?""
He looked grim.
"I don't know.""
I continued reading.
The truth is bigger than one accident.
The person who changed the records wasn't trying to protect Ethan.
They were trying to protect something else.
Something that happened before the crash.
Something Ethan was involved in.
My hands went still.
Before the crash.
Something else.
Richard watched my face.
"What does that mean?""
I looked up.
"I don't know.""
But deep inside, I knew one thing.
This wasn't only about blaming me for an accident.
It was about hiding another secret.
A bigger one.
A secret that started before Ethan ever entered my emergency room.
The message continued.
Jenna, if anyone tells you this was only about fear, don't believe them.
Fear was the excuse.
The truth was money.
I stopped reading.
Money.
The word felt heavier than the others.
"What money?"" I whispered.
Richard took the phone.
His expression changed as he read the final lines.
"What?""
"What does it say?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he looked at me.
"Jenna...""
"What?""
His face had lost all color.
"The person who paid to change the records...""
He swallowed.
"...used your name.""
My heart dropped.
"What?""
Richard turned the phone toward me.
At the bottom of the message was one final sentence.
The money trail was created to make it look like Jenna Morgan accepted payment for covering up the accident.
I stared at the words.
A fake payment.
A fake signature.
A fake story.
They hadn't just blamed me.
They had built a world where I looked guilty.
Felicity stepped backward.
"I didn't know about that part.""
I looked at her.
"You're lying.""
Her face tightened.
"No.""
"You're lying.""
The certainty in my own voice surprised me.
Because for years, I had doubted myself.
But now?
Now I could see.
Felicity wasn't someone caught in a mistake.
She was someone protecting a story.
Richard looked at her.
"How much did you know?""
Felicity stayed silent.
Then Ethan spoke.
"Felicity.""
She looked at him.
"Tell the truth.""
For the first time, he sounded afraid of her answer.
She closed her eyes.
And when she opened them again, the tears were gone.
Only exhaustion remained.
"I knew about the payment.""
The hallway seemed to stop.
Ethan stared at her.
"You knew?""
"I didn't arrange it.""
"But you knew.""
She nodded.
Richard's voice was barely controlled.
"Who paid it?""
Felicity looked at me.
And I knew before she said anything that I wasn't going to like the answer.
"It was someone who wanted you gone.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The person who had been trying to ruin your career long before Ethan's accident.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
Felicity looked toward the ballroom.
Toward the guests.
Toward the perfect wedding she had built.
Then she said a name.
May you like
A name that made my entire body freeze.
"Your father.""
