Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Lie

I drove back to the hospital faster than I should have.

Marcus sat in the passenger seat, one hand gripping the dashboard.

“Daniel, slow down.””

I barely heard him.

Someone had changed Lily’s emergency contact information.

Someone had entered my daughter’s medical records.

Someone was trying to erase me.

“I can’t lose her.””

The words came out before I realized I had said them.

Marcus looked at me.

“You’re not going to.””

“You don’t know that.””

“No.””

He looked straight ahead.

“But I know this.””

“What?””

“You’re doing exactly what they expect.””

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

“What do you mean?””

“They want you afraid.””

I shook my head.

“My daughter is in danger.””

“Yes.””

His voice remained calm.

“And fear is exactly why you need to think clearly.””

I hated that he was right.

Because fear had controlled me for two years.

Fear after Anna died.

Fear that I wasn’t enough.

Fear that Lily would lose another parent.

And Evelyn had used every bit of it.

When we reached the hospital, Sarah was already there.

She stood outside Lily’s room, speaking with a nurse.

The second she saw me, she walked over.

“Daniel.””

“What happened?””

Her expression was serious.

“The hospital received a request to update Lily’s emergency contact.””

“From who?””

“They claimed to be from you.””

My blood ran cold.

“I never approved that.””

“I know.””

“Then how did they do it?””

Sarah looked uncomfortable.

“Someone used your information.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Which information?””

“The usual verification details.””

I felt sick.

Richard knew those.

Evelyn knew those.

Anyone with access to my personal files could have known.

“Where is Lily?””

Sarah pointed toward the room.

“She’s sleeping.””

I walked inside.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

My daughter was curled beneath the blanket, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Alive.

Safe.

That was all that mattered.

I sat beside her.

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Dad?””

“I’m here.””

She smiled faintly.

“You came back.””

I brushed her hair away.

“Always.””

She looked around.

“Is Grandma gone?””

I hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

The answer surprised me.

“Why?””

Lily looked down.

“Because she scares me.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because she said you wouldn’t believe me.””

I held her hand.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“There is nothing you could ever tell me that would make me stop believing you.””

She nodded.

Then whispered:

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Grandma wasn’t surprised when I got sick.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“She didn’t look scared.””

I stared at her.

“She looked…”

Lily searched for the word.

“Happy.””

The room became silent.

A child’s observation.

A simple word.

But it carried more weight than anything else.

Marcus entered quietly.

“Daniel.””

I stood.

“What?””

“The hospital found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He handed me a folder.

“Your emergency contact change request.””

I opened it.

A printed form.

A signature.

My signature.

Except it wasn’t mine.

I stared at it.

“That’s a fake.””

“Yes.””

“And you know who did it?””

Marcus nodded.

“We have an idea.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Richard Blake.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where is he?””

“We’re looking for him.””

I looked at Lily.

Then back at Marcus.

“He’s trying to take her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hasn’t anyone stopped him?””

“Because he’s been careful.””

I hated that word.

Careful.

Everyone who hurt my family had been careful.

Evelyn.

Richard.

Even the people who claimed they were helping.

They all had explanations.

They all had reasons.

But Lily only had me.

A nurse knocked on the door.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here asking to see you.””

My entire body went tense.

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

“Anna Carter’s brother.””

I froze.

Anna’s brother.

Michael.

I hadn’t seen him since the funeral.

He had disappeared afterward.

Not just from me.

From everyone.

“Why is he here?””

The nurse shook her head.

“He said he has information about your wife.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

“Waiting outside.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Do you think it’s a trap?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because Marcus always seemed to know something.

But this time, he didn’t.

I walked into the hallway.

A man stood near the elevators.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

He looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

My anger rose.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“You all knew things.””

“I did.””

“And you let me believe Anna died in an accident.””

His face changed.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Michael looked toward Lily’s room.

“Is she okay?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

He swallowed.

“Then maybe I’m not too late.””

I stepped closer.

“What do you know?””

Michael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after Anna died.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because of what was inside.””

My heart pounded.

“What was inside?””

He looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Proof that Anna knew someone was trying to hurt your family.””

I took the envelope.

My hands shook.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

Only one sentence.

*If anything happens to me, show Daniel the video.*

My stomach dropped.

“What video?””

Michael looked at me.

“The one Anna recorded the night before she died.””

Marcus immediately took the flash drive.

“Where did you get this?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I took it.””

“What?””

“After Anna died, I found it hidden in her office.””

“Then why keep it?””

Michael’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because the person in the video was someone I trusted.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

And for a moment, I already knew.

But I needed him to say it.

“Evelyn.””

Marcus connected the flash drive to a secure device.

Everyone gathered around.

The video loaded.

Anna appeared on the screen.

My heart stopped.

I hadn’t seen her moving in two years.

Not a photograph.

Not a memory.

Her.

Her voice.

Her eyes.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

“Daniel,” she said.

I covered my mouth.

Because hearing her say my name almost destroyed me.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The video continued.

“I discovered Evelyn has been planning to gain control over Lily’s future.””

I looked at Marcus.

The words matched the letter.

Anna continued.

“She believes Lily’s trust fund belongs to the family, not to Lily.””

A pause.

“But that isn’t the most dangerous part.””

My heart raced.

Anna looked frightened.

“The most dangerous part is that Evelyn knows something about Lily’s birth that Daniel does not.””

The room went silent.

My entire body froze.

Lily’s birth.

What could that mean?

Anna continued.

“There is a truth about our daughter that I was afraid to tell you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Anna looked down.

Then back at the camera.

“Daniel, Lily is not connected to the Whitmore family by blood.””

I stared at the screen.

Nothing made sense.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

Sarah went pale.

Anna continued.

“She was adopted.””

The world stopped.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The child I had raised.

The child I loved more than anything.

Anna’s voice trembled.

“And Evelyn knows.””

The video glitched.

Then the final words came through.

“Daniel, if Evelyn finds out I told you…”

A pause.

“Protect Lily from her.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, the entire story had changed.

The allergy.

The custody battle.

The trust fund.

The lies.

Everything.

Marcus looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t answer.

Because one thought was louder than everything else.

Evelyn wasn’t trying to take Lily away because she was her grandmother.

She was trying to take Lily away because she knew a secret.

A secret that could destroy everything.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

The caller ID appeared.

*Evelyn Whitmore.*

I answered.

And the first thing she said was:

“Now you know the truth.””

My blood ran cold.

“How did you know?””

She was silent for a moment.

Then whispered:

“Because Anna told me she made a mistake.””

I froze.

“What mistake?””

Her voice became softer.

“She chose you instead of me.””

May you like

A pause.

“And now you’re going to learn why that choice was the biggest mistake of her life.””
