Amused

Chapter 7: The Secret Anna Left Behind

I didn’t remember leaving the courtroom.

One moment I was standing there, staring at Evelyn’s back as she walked away.

The next, I was outside in the hallway, surrounded by strangers, unable to hear anything except one sentence repeating in my mind.

*Anna never told you the truth.*

My wife’s name had become a weapon.

And Evelyn knew exactly where to aim it.

“Daniel.””

Sarah’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

“What did she mean?””

Sarah didn’t answer immediately.

She looked toward the courtroom doors.

“She knows something.””

“That’s obvious.””

“No.””

Sarah lowered her voice.

“She knows something she believes will hurt you.””

I ran my hand over my face.

“I don’t understand.””

Marcus stood beside us.

“Maybe we need to stop assuming this started with the luncheon.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Evelyn may have been building this for longer than we realized.””

I thought about Lily saying Evelyn visited my office.

Looking through my papers.

I thought about Richard.

The custody petition.

The recording.

The missing injector.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“What if this wasn’t about custody?””

Sarah frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“What if custody was just the excuse?””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“What would the real reason be?””

I didn’t know.

And that scared me.

Because for two years, I thought I understood my family.

Then, in a few days, everything I believed started falling apart.

My phone buzzed.

A text message.

From an unknown number.

I expected another threat.

Instead, it was a location.

*Your wife left something for you.*

My heart stopped.

Below it was an address.

A storage facility.

Sarah saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I showed her.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You don’t go anywhere alone.””

“It says Anna left something.””

“We don’t know who sent it.””

“I need to know.””

Marcus studied my face.

Then sighed.

“Fine.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You’re agreeing?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m saying we investigate it properly.””

Two hours later, we arrived at the storage facility.

The place was quiet.

Rows of metal doors stretched down a long hallway.

A manager met us at the front desk.

“Can I help you?””

Marcus showed his badge.

“We’re looking for information about a storage unit.””

The manager checked his computer.

After a few minutes, he looked confused.

“That’s strange.””

“What?””

“This unit was registered under Anna Carter.””

My chest tightened.

“My wife?””

He nodded.

“But the access instructions are unusual.””

“How?””

He turned the screen slightly.

“Only one person was authorized to enter.””

I already knew the answer before he said it.

“Who?””

The manager looked at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the screen.

Anna had created a storage unit.

And somehow, she had arranged for me to access it.

But she never told me.

“Can we open it?”” Marcus asked.

The manager handed over a key.

“Your signature is required.””

My hand shook slightly as I signed.

The metal door rolled upward.

Inside was nothing like I expected.

No furniture.

No boxes of old clothes.

No memories.

Just documents.

Hundreds of pages stacked carefully.

A laptop.

And a small envelope with my name written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Anna’s handwriting.

I stopped breathing.

I hadn’t seen it in two years.

Not since the last birthday card she wrote for me.

My fingers touched the envelope.

“Daniel?””

I couldn’t answer.

I opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

My hands trembled as I read.

*Daniel,*

*If you are reading this, something happened that made you question the people around you.*

I swallowed.

Marcus and Sarah stayed silent.

*First, I need you to know something. I trusted you more than anyone in this world.*

My vision blurred.

*But I also knew you would try to protect everyone, even people who didn’t deserve it.*

I closed my eyes.

That was Anna.

She always knew me better than I knew myself.

*Evelyn has never accepted that Lily belongs with you. She believes our daughter is part of her family’s legacy, not ours.*

My grip tightened.

*I tried to confront her. I tried to set boundaries. But she became more careful. More patient.*

I looked at Marcus.

This sounded exactly like what had happened.

*Richard knows more than he admits.*

My heart dropped.

Even Anna knew.

*I don’t know how far this will go. But if something happens to me, please don’t let anyone convince you that you are not enough for Lily.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*You are her father. You are her home.*

I had to stop reading for a moment.

Because the pain came back.

The kind of pain that never truly left.

Anna wasn’t just a memory.

She was still here.

Still trying to protect us.

I continued.

*There is one more thing you need to know.*

The next sentence changed everything.

*The day before I died, I found out Evelyn had been accessing my private files.*

I looked up.

“What?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I kept reading.

*She was searching for information about Lily’s inheritance.*

I felt confused.

“Inheritance?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Daniel?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

I read further.

*Lily’s trust fund. The account my parents created before she was born. The account that only becomes accessible when she turns eighteen.*

My stomach tightened.

Lily had a trust fund.

I knew.

Anna’s parents had created one.

But it wasn’t a huge amount.

At least, that was what I believed.

*Evelyn thinks she can control the money if she controls Lily.*

I looked at Marcus.

“That can’t be right.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s not enough money to explain this.””

Sarah looked at the documents.

“Maybe we need to see exactly what’s inside.””

I opened another file.

And then I saw the number.

I froze.

The amount was much larger than I remembered.

Much larger.

“Anna never told me.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She may have been trying to protect you.””

“Or she didn’t trust me.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Daniel, read the letter.””

I looked down again.

The final paragraph waited.

*If Evelyn ever tries to take Lily from you, don’t fight her with anger. Fight her with the truth.*

I swallowed.

*There are documents here proving what she has done. There are records of conversations. There are names.*

My heart raced.

Names.

*But there is one person you need to be careful with.*

I turned the page.

And stopped.

Because the name written there was one I never expected.

*Daniel, do not trust Sarah Mitchell.*

I looked up.

The room went silent.

Sarah stared at me.

Marcus looked between us.

“What?””

I slowly lowered the letter.

Because the woman standing beside me…

The woman helping me fight Evelyn…

Was the person my dead wife had warned me about.

Sarah’s face changed.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

My chest tightened.

“What did Anna know?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

“Sarah.””

She looked away.

And that was enough.

Because innocent people usually defend themselves immediately.

They say:

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

They demand answers.

They get angry.

Sarah didn’t.

She looked afraid.

Marcus noticed too.

“Ms. Mitchell.””

She finally spoke.

“I didn’t want him to find out this way.””

My heart pounded.

“Find out what?””

She looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“Anna wasn’t investigating Evelyn alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Sarah took a slow breath.

“I was helping her.””

The hallway suddenly felt too quiet.

“You knew my wife?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Sarah looked down.

“Because before Anna died…”

She paused.

“I was the one who helped her uncover the first piece of evidence.””

I stared at her.

“Then why would Anna tell me not to trust you?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with regret.

May you like

And her answer was the last thing I expected.

“Because she thought I was the reason she died.””
