Amused

Chapter 5: The Betrayal in My Own House

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

I stared at the photograph Marcus had handed me.

The man beside Evelyn wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t some distant acquaintance.

He wasn’t someone I could dismiss as part of her circle.

He was the person I had trusted to protect my daughter.

My attorney.

Richard Blake.

The man who had helped me finalize Anna’s estate.

The man who had sat across from me after my wife’s funeral and told me:

“Daniel, focus on Lily. That’s what Anna would want.””

The man who had promised me he would always look out for my family.

My fingers tightened around the photo.

“No.””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“You know him?””

I laughed once, but it sounded broken.

“Know him?””

I looked up.

“He’s my lawyer.””

Marcus’s expression remained calm, but his eyes sharpened.

“How long has he represented you?””

“Two years.””

“Since your wife passed?””

“Yes.””

“And he’s been involved in the custody situation?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Marcus took the photograph back.

“That’s important.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard knows everything.””

Marcus waited.

I realized how dangerous that sentence sounded.

“He knows Lily’s medical history. He knows my financial situation. He knows every private conversation I’ve had since Anna died.””

Marcus leaned back slightly.

“Then he had access.””

The word hit me.

Access.

That was what everyone kept coming back to.

Who knew?

Who had access?

Who could have done this?

I looked through the hospital room window at Lily.

She was coloring quietly.

A nurse had given her a small book of animals.

She was drawing a rabbit.

Completely unaware that the adults around her had turned her life into a battlefield.

“What do I do now?”” I asked.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You don’t confront him.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“He helped plan this.””

“We don’t know that yet.””

“He’s in the recording.””

“Being present in a conversation is not the same as committing a crime.””

I hated that he was right.

Because I wanted certainty.

I wanted someone to tell me who was responsible.

I wanted the anger inside me to have somewhere to go.

Instead, I had questions.

And questions were exhausting.

Marcus continued.

“Your attorney has access to information that could explain how Evelyn prepared her custody petition.””

“So?””

“So if he is involved, he may not know we suspect him.””

I understood.

“Keep him unaware.””

“Exactly.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Richard smiling beside Evelyn.

Two people I had trusted.

Two people who had been quietly discussing my daughter’s future.

Without me.

My phone rang.

I already knew who it was before looking.

Richard Blake.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus noticed.

“Answer.””

I looked at him.

“Are you serious?””

“Yes.””

“What if he knows?””

“Then you’ll learn something.””

My thumb hovered over the button.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

Richard’s voice came through.

“Daniel. I heard about Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course he heard.

Everyone heard.

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Evelyn called me.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She’s concerned.””

I looked at Marcus.

“She’s concerned?””

“Daniel, I know you’re upset.””

“No, Richard.””

My voice lowered.

“I don’t think you do.””

“Let’s not make emotional decisions right now.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

“Emotional decisions?””

“Yes. This is a difficult situation.””

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“Why?””

“Just answer.””

“Daniel.””

“Where are you?””

He sighed.

“At my office.””

“Are you alone?””

The silence lasted too long.

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel, what is this?””

“Are you alone?””

“No.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who’s with you?””

“Why does that matter?””

“Who?””

Then I heard a voice in the background.

A woman.

I didn’t recognize it.

But I recognized the sound of someone trying not to be heard.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Daniel, we’ll talk later.””

“No.””

My heart was pounding.

“Who is there?””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Marcus looked at me.

“What happened?””

“Someone was with him.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time from Richard.

*Do not make accusations you cannot prove.*

I showed Marcus.

He read it silently.

Then said:

“He knows.””

I looked at him.

“Knows what?””

“That you’re suspicious.””

My hands shook.

“This is insane.””

“No.””

Marcus looked toward Lily.

“This is organized.””

The word hung in the air.

Organized.

Not an argument.

Not a family disagreement.

Not a grandmother who went too far.

A plan.

A few minutes later, Marcus left to meet with another investigator.

I stayed with Lily.

I tried to act normal.

I helped her color.

I asked about the cartoon she wanted to watch when she got home.

I pretended my entire world wasn’t collapsing.

Then Lily said something that made me stop.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Grandma used to visit your office.””

I looked at her.

“My office?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Sometimes when you were working late.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did she tell you that?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because I saw her.””

“When?””

Lily shrugged.

“A lot.””

I felt a chill.

“Lily, sweetheart, what did Grandma do at my office?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“She said she was helping.””

“Helping with what?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked down.

“But she always looked at your papers.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What papers?””

“The ones on your desk.””

I stood slowly.

“Did she touch them?””

Lily nodded.

“Sometimes.””

A thousand thoughts raced through my head.

Legal documents.

Financial records.

Custody information.

Medical records.

Everything.

Richard had access.

Evelyn had access.

And somehow, they had been working together.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the city continued like nothing had happened.

Cars moved.

People walked.

Someone laughed in the parking lot.

The world didn’t stop when your life broke.

It just kept moving.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a voicemail notification.

From an unknown number.

I pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

A voice I recognized immediately.

Richard.

“Evelyn, I’m telling you, this is risky.””

I froze.

The recording continued.

“She’s already suspicious.””

Evelyn’s voice answered.

“Then make sure she’s too busy defending herself to look closer.””

My blood ran cold.

Richard spoke again.

“What about the detective?””

“He won’t find anything.””

“And Daniel?””

A pause.

Then Evelyn said:

“Daniel will do exactly what grieving fathers always do.””

The recording ended.

I stared at my phone.

Because there was one sentence that terrified me more than everything else.

Not because of what Evelyn said.

Because of what it meant.

She had been studying me.

She had been predicting me.

She thought she knew exactly how I would react.

The hospital door opened.

Marcus stepped back inside.

One look at my face told him something had happened.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He listened.

When it ended, his expression changed for the first time.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Concern.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“We need to move your daughter somewhere secure.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the hospital hallway.

Then back at me.

“Because if Evelyn and Richard were willing to create a situation where Lily almost died…”

He paused.

“And they believe you’re close to exposing them…”

The room went cold.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying Lily may not be safe here anymore.””

Before I could answer, the hospital lights flickered.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

Evelyn.

I answered.

I don’t know why.

Maybe because I needed to hear her voice.

Maybe because I needed to know if the woman I once called family was still somewhere inside that person.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

Too softly.

“I know you found the recording.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

She ignored the question.

“You should have left things alone.””

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately motioned for me to keep her talking.

“Where is Lily’s best interest in this?””

A quiet laugh.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The thing you always do.””

“What?””

“You pretend this is about Lily.””

My grip tightened.

“Because it is.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice became colder.

“This has always been about control.””

I stared at the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

“You lost Anna.””

Silence.

“And now you think Lily is the only thing keeping you alive.””

My throat tightened.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“I know more than you think.””

Then she whispered:

“And tomorrow, when the court sees what I have prepared…”

A pause.

“You’ll understand why you never should have challenged me.””

The call ended.

I looked at Marcus.

“What court?””

He was already reaching for his phone.

Then his expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your custody hearing was moved.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

I stared at Lily.

Tomorrow.

Evelyn wasn’t waiting.

May you like

She was already moving.

And she had planned every step before I ever knew there was a war.
