Chapter 8: The Woman Anna Blamed
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The storage facility hallway felt frozen.
I looked at Sarah.
The same woman who had stood beside me in court.
The same woman who had told me to stay calm.
The same woman who had promised she would help me protect Lily.
And now she was telling me my wife thought she was responsible for her death.
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
“Explain.””
Sarah swallowed.
“I should have told you everything before today.””
“Yes.””
“You’re right.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I don’t want an apology. I want the truth.””
Marcus remained between us, watching carefully.
Sarah nodded.
“I understand.””
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“Anna and I met almost a year before she died.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“Through work.””
“What work?””
Sarah hesitated.
“I was investigating financial fraud connected to the Whitmore Foundation.””
The name hit me immediately.
“Evelyn’s foundation?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Anna knew?””
“She suspected something.””
Sarah walked toward one of the storage boxes.
“She started noticing things that didn’t make sense.””
“What things?””
“Money moving between accounts. Unusual legal documents. People being pressured into signing agreements they didn’t fully understand.””
I looked at the files stacked around us.
“And Evelyn was involved?””
“We believed she was.””
“We?””
Sarah nodded.
“Anna and I.””
I looked away.
All this time, while I was grieving, while I was trying to survive each day with Lily, Anna had been fighting a battle I never knew existed.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Sarah’s expression softened.
“Because she knew you.””
That answer hurt.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew you would confront Evelyn.””
“I would have.””
“Exactly.””
Sarah looked at me.
“And Evelyn was dangerous when she felt threatened.””
I thought about the recording.
The threats.
The custody petition.
She was right.
But I still had questions.
“What does any of this have to do with you causing Anna’s death?””
Sarah looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“What kind of mistake?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“The night Anna died, she was supposed to meet me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She had new evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“A recording.””
I felt cold.
“Of Evelyn?””
Sarah nodded.
“She believed Evelyn was planning to use Lily’s trust fund to gain control over her future.””
I looked at the documents.
“And you were meeting her?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Sarah’s face changed.
“I was late.””
The words were simple.
But the pain behind them was obvious.
“I was stuck in traffic. I called Anna and told her I would be twenty minutes late.””
“And?””
“She said she would wait.””
I looked at her.
“She never made it.””
Sarah nodded.
“The accident happened before I arrived.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Ms. Mitchell, why would Anna blame you?””
Sarah looked at the floor.
“Because I told her to meet somewhere public.””
“Why?””
“Because I was worried someone was watching her.””
My stomach tightened.
“And you think that location made her vulnerable?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I looked at the letter again.
*I thought she was the reason I died.*
Anna had written those words.
But maybe there was more.
“Did Anna know you were investigating Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know you were meeting her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she leave this letter saying not to trust you?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because after Anna died, someone accessed her files.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because I saw the access logs.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“When?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Two days after Anna’s funeral.””
“And you didn’t tell Daniel?””
“No.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer shocked me.
“Afraid of what?””
“That whoever accessed the files was still watching.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Did you tell law enforcement?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
The words hung in the air.
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to believe Sarah was lying.
But every piece of this story had another layer.
Another secret.
Another person hiding something.
I turned away.
“I need to see the files.””
Sarah nodded.
“Okay.””
We spent the next hour opening boxes.
Anna had been meticulous.
Every document was labeled.
Every date was organized.
She had created a timeline.
A timeline of Evelyn’s actions.
Financial records.
Emails.
Legal documents.
And something that made my blood run cold.
A list of names.
People connected to Evelyn.
At the bottom was one name highlighted.
Richard Blake.
My former attorney.
Sarah pointed to the page.
“Anna discovered Richard had been helping Evelyn before she died.””
My hands tightened.
“How long?””
“Months.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was still trying to understand what they were planning.””
I picked up another document.
It was an email.
From Richard.
To Evelyn.
The message was short.
*The guardianship argument will work if the medical incident creates doubt about Daniel’s ability to provide care.*
My stomach turned.
“They planned this.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“Before Lily got hurt.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Then the luncheon wasn’t the beginning.””
“No,” he said.
“It was the execution.””
The word made me sick.
Execution.
Like this had been a strategy.
Not an accident.
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
Marcus motioned for me to answer.
I pressed the speaker button.
“Hello?””
No response.
Then a sound.
A child’s voice.
My heart stopped.
“Dad?””
I stood instantly.
“Lily?””
But it wasn’t Lily.
The voice was distorted.
Recorded.
Then another voice came through.
Evelyn.
“You should have stayed away.””
My blood went cold.
Marcus immediately started tracing the call.
Evelyn continued.
“You keep searching for answers.””
A pause.
“Now you’re going to find them.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where is my daughter?””
Silence.
Then:
“She’s safe.””
I felt a wave of panic.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she’s with someone who actually understands what she needs.””
My voice became sharp.
“Where is Lily?””
The call crackled.
Then Evelyn said:
“You’re going to learn the truth about Anna.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You think Anna was protecting you.””
A pause.
“She wasn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
“She knew the truth about Lily’s accident.””
The words made no sense.
“What accident?””
Another pause.
Then:
“The accident that killed her.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Marcus looked at me.
“What did she mean?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I had spent two years believing Anna’s death was a tragic accident.
A rainy road.
A bad moment.
A terrible loss.
But Evelyn’s words had planted something terrifying.
A question.
What if it wasn’t an accident?
Sarah stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face had gone pale.
“There’s something I never told Anna.””
“What?””
Sarah looked at the documents.
Then at me.
“Before she died, Anna found evidence that someone had tampered with her car.””
The room went silent.
My heart felt like it stopped.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she didn’t know who she could trust.””
I looked at the files.
The secrets.
The lies.
The people around me.
Then my phone buzzed again.
A message.
This time, it wasn’t from Evelyn.
It was from the hospital.
*Emergency contact update received.*
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
Because someone had just changed Lily’s emergency contact information.
May you like
And the new listed guardian was:
*Evelyn Whitmore.*
