Amused

Chapter 9: The Sister Behind the Lie

The address on my phone burned into my mind.

A place.

A time.

A promise.

And a woman’s face.

Emma.

My sister.

A person I had spent my entire life believing never existed.

My hands trembled as I stared at the photograph.

She looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

Alive.

That one word changed everything.

“Olivia.””

Adrian’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He was watching me carefully.

Not like before.

Not with suspicion.

With concern.

“You can’t go alone.””

The words were immediate.

I looked at him.

“The message said alone.””

“I don’t care what it said.””

His voice was firm.

“I’m not letting you walk into a trap.””

I almost smiled.

A few hours ago, he was the one pushing me out of our home.

Now he was standing between me and danger.

Life had a strange way of changing everything in a single night.

“You don’t get to protect me now because you feel guilty,” I said quietly.

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But he nodded.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t argue.

He didn’t defend himself.

He simply accepted it.

“I hurt you,” he said.

The room became silent.

“I made choices without listening to you. I believed people who wanted something from me instead of the woman who had been beside me for years.””

His eyes lowered.

“I can’t undo that.””

I looked away.

Because part of me wanted to forgive him.

And part of me remembered standing at that door with my unborn child while he chose another woman.

“I need answers,” I whispered.

Adrian nodded.

“Then we find them.””

Lucas stepped closer.

“The message is from someone connected to Victor.””

Everyone looked at him.

“How do you know?”” Camille asked.

Lucas pointed at the phone.

“Because Victor always uses fear first.””

He looked at me.

“He wants Olivia isolated.””

I stared at the picture.

“Why?””

Lucas’s expression darkened.

“Because Emma is the one person who knows what really happened.””

Camille suddenly spoke.

“She also knows why Olivia was chosen.””

I turned toward her.

“Chosen for what?””

Camille hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“You know more than you’ve said.””

She looked down.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

My anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“Protect yourself. Protect Adrian. Protect the company.””

My voice shook.

“But who protected me?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Camille wiped her eyes.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised me.

“I made terrible choices.””

She looked at Adrian.

“I thought I could fix what Victor started.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You destroyed my marriage.””

Camille looked at me.

“I know.””

The room fell quiet.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small key.

“I can help you find Emma.””

Lucas immediately became alert.

“What is that?””

“A key.””

“To what?””

Camille looked at me.

“Something Victor never found.””

I stared.

“Where?””

She took a breath.

“Your old house.””

My heart stopped.

“My old house?””

“The one your parents lived in.””

I frowned.

“That house was sold years ago.””

Camille shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“It wasn’t.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“Victor made sure everyone thought it was gone.””

Lucas stepped forward.

“Camille.””

She looked at him.

“There are things hidden there.””

My phone vibrated again.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

This time, no text.

Just a location update.

And a countdown.

00:30:00

Thirty minutes.

My breathing changed.

“He knows.””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“He knows we received the message.””

Lucas nodded.

“He wants us to rush.””

“Then we don’t.””

Adrian looked at me.

“We don’t follow his rules.””

But I looked at Emma’s picture.

My sister.

Waiting.

After years of silence.

I shook my head.

“We have to go.””

Adrian frowned.

“Olivia.””

“If she’s alive…”

My voice broke.

“If she’s really my sister, I can’t ignore her.””

Nobody argued.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the old house.

The place looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A home that had been forgotten.

But I remembered it.

Not from living there.

From dreams.

Strange dreams I never understood.

The smell of cinnamon.

A woman singing.

A little girl laughing.

My childhood.

But not my childhood.

I stepped toward the door.

My hands shook.

Camille gave me the key.

“Are you ready?””

No.

I wasn’t.

But I opened the door anyway.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Old furniture.

Old pictures.

Old memories.

Lucas searched the room.

Adrian stayed beside me.

I walked toward the hallway.

There was a small wooden frame hanging on the wall.

A picture inside.

I picked it up.

And my entire body froze.

Two little girls.

One older.

One younger.

Standing together.

The older girl had her arm around me.

Emma.

I touched the picture.

A memory exploded.

“Liv.””

A little girl’s voice.

“You have to promise.””

I was young.

Very young.

“I promise.””

“What if they find me?””

“Don’t worry.””

My younger voice.

“I’ll protect you.””

I dropped the frame.

Adrian caught me.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“I remember.””

Everyone stopped.

“What?””

I looked at the picture.

“I remember Emma.””

Lucas approached slowly.

“What do you remember?””

I closed my eyes.

“She wasn’t just my sister.””

My voice trembled.

“She raised me.””

The truth came back piece by piece.

Emma.

My parents.

The secret.

The accident.

“She found out Victor was hurting people.””

Lucas nodded.

“Because of your father’s company.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“It was bigger.””

I walked toward the old fireplace.

My hand touched the brick.

Something felt familiar.

“There was something here.””

“What?”” Adrian asked.

“A hidden place.””

I searched the wall.

Then I found it.

A small crack.

I pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a box.

Everyone gathered around.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photos.

And one envelope.

With my name.

Not Olivia Whitmore.

Olivia Carter.

I opened it.

The handwriting was Emma’s.

My heart broke.

Olivia, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

I covered my mouth.

Adrian read over my shoulder.

Victor will tell you that you are not who you think you are. He will tell you that your memories are false. He will tell you that you caused the accident.

My blood ran cold.

The accident.

Don’t believe him.

The room became silent.

You saved Adrian because you were brave. You protected him because you were kind. But Victor was afraid of you because you saw what he did.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

The truth is, Olivia, you were never the target.

I held my breath.

I was.

A sound came from outside.

A car.

Everyone froze.

Lucas moved toward the window.

“Someone’s here.””

Adrian grabbed the letter.

“What else does it say?””

I looked down.

The final lines were written differently.

As if Emma had written them in a hurry.

If Victor finds you before I do, remember one thing.

My hands shook.

The man you married was never the reason your life was destroyed.

I looked at Adrian.

The final sentence appeared.

But he was the reason Victor was able to find you.

The door downstairs slammed.

Someone had entered the house.

Camille whispered:

“He’s here.””

Lucas looked at the stairs.

“We need to leave.””

But then a voice echoed from below.

A voice I recognized.

A voice from my nightmares.

“Olivia.””

My blood froze.

Victor.

“I know you found the letter.””

Adrian moved in front of me.

But Victor continued.

“And I know you’re wondering why Emma lied to you.””

The footsteps grew closer.

“Because she wasn’t protecting you from me.””

A pause.

“She was protecting you from the truth about your husband.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Victor reached the bottom of the stairs.

And smiled.

“Hello, Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“Did you finally tell him who you really are?””

Nobody moved.

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Because Olivia…”

He smiled coldly.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

He held up a document.

A birth certificate.

May you like

And the name printed on it made me stop breathing.

*Olivia Hale.*
