Amused

Chapter 3: The Man Who Knew the Truth

The room went completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

Adrian stood frozen near the fireplace, the letter still slipping from his fingers.

Camille looked like she had seen a ghost.

And I couldn’t move.

Because the man standing in my doorway wasn’t just a stranger.

He was the missing piece of a nightmare I had been trying to understand.

Lucas Bennett.

Camille’s brother.

The name written at the bottom of the documents I found.

The name connected to the secret payments.

The name Adrian had just heard over the phone.

He looked older than the photos I had seen. His face was thinner, his eyes darker, and there was a scar running along his jaw that made him look like someone who had survived something terrible.

He held a thick brown folder against his chest.

“Lucas,” Camille said again, but this time there was no confidence in her voice.

Only fear.

Lucas looked at her.

“Did you really think you could hide forever?””

Camille took a step back.

“Leave.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“You still give orders like you’re in control.””

Adrian looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Lucas ignored Camille and walked toward the center of the room.

“I came here because Olivia deserves to know the truth.””

My heart tightened.

Me?

After everything that happened tonight, I wasn’t sure I wanted another truth.

Truth had already taken everything from me.

But I forced myself to stand straight.

“What truth?””

Lucas looked at Adrian.

“The truth that your wife has been protecting you from.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Don’t call her my wife like you know anything about us.””

Lucas studied him.

“You don’t even know what kind of man you’ve become.””

The words hit harder than they should have.

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

“Watch yourself.””

“No,” Lucas said quietly.

“You need to watch yourself.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of papers.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photographs.

My stomach twisted.

I had seen some of those documents before.

But not all of them.

Lucas pulled out a photograph and placed it on the table.

Adrian picked it up.

His expression changed instantly.

It was a picture of Camille.

Standing outside Adrian’s company.

Holding a file.

“When was this taken?”” Adrian asked.

“Seven months ago,” Lucas answered.

Adrian looked confused.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Camille told me she had never been involved with my company before we met.””

Lucas nodded.

“Exactly.””

Camille stepped forward.

“You’re twisting things.””

Lucas turned toward her.

“Am I?””

She stopped.

He reached into the folder again.

“This is the contract you signed.””

Adrian grabbed it.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then slower.

Then he stopped.

“What is this?””

Camille said nothing.

Adrian looked up.

“Camille.””

Her lips pressed together.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“Not again.””

The pain in his voice surprised me.

Because this time, he wasn’t angry.

He was hurt.

The same way I had been.

Lucas leaned against the table.

“Camille didn’t meet you by accident.””

The words landed heavily.

Adrian looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

I held my breath.

Because deep down, I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

Lucas looked directly at Adrian.

“She chose you.””

Camille’s face went pale.

“Stop.””

Lucas continued.

“She studied your company. Your habits. Your personal life.””

“Stop!””

“She knew about Olivia.””

Adrian turned toward Camille.

Slowly.

“You knew about me?””

Camille looked away.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“Answer me.””

She didn’t.

And that silence was enough.

I watched the man I loved realize he had been manipulated.

It should have made me happy.

It didn’t.

Because seeing someone hurt didn’t erase the fact that they hurt me first.

Adrian looked at Lucas.

“Why?””

Lucas’s expression darkened.

“Because of me.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

Camille closed her eyes.

Lucas continued.

“Years ago, I made a mistake. A big one.””

He placed another document on the table.

“My company was failing. I borrowed money from the wrong people.””

Camille whispered.

“Lucas, don’t.””

But he didn’t stop.

“They weren’t normal investors. They wanted control.””

Adrian looked down at the paper.

“Your company?””

Lucas nodded.

“And Camille made a deal with them.””

The room became colder.

“She was supposed to get close to you,” Lucas said.

Adrian looked at Camille.

“For what?””

Lucas answered.

“To get access.””

The word hung in the air.

Access.

Not love.

Not a relationship.

A mission.

Adrian looked sick.

“No.””

Camille finally broke.

“You don’t understand!””

Everyone looked at her.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I didn’t plan for this.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You didn’t plan to lie?””

“No.””

“You didn’t plan to destroy my marriage?””

“I didn’t plan to fall in love with you!””

The room went silent.

Even Camille seemed shocked that she had said it out loud.

Adrian stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I do.””

Her voice cracked.

“At first, yes. I was sent there. I was supposed to get information.””

Lucas looked away.

“But then things changed.””

Camille stepped closer.

“I got to know you.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“I saw how you treated people. How you cared about your employees. How you talked about having a family.””

She looked at my stomach.

Her eyes softened for half a second.

“I saw the life you had.””

My chest tightened.

Because even now, she was standing in my home.

After taking my husband.

After humiliating me.

And somehow, there was pain in her eyes.

But pain didn’t excuse cruelty.

“You still chose to destroy it,” I said.

Camille looked at me.

“I know.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I know.””

For the first time, she sounded human.

Not the woman who smiled while I cried.

Not the woman who told me I had lost.

Just someone who had made terrible choices.

But then Lucas spoke.

“She’s leaving out the worst part.””

Camille turned sharply.

“Lucas.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What worst part?””

Lucas hesitated.

Then he pulled out another paper.

This one was different.

Old.

Folded.

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same type of paper I had found three days ago.

The same handwriting.

The same ink.

Lucas handed it to Adrian.

“Read the date.””

Adrian looked.

His face changed.

“Three years ago?””

I felt my heart stop.

Three years.

Before Camille.

Before the affair.

Before everything fell apart.

Adrian looked at me.

“Olivia…”

I didn’t know what he was going to ask.

But I already knew.

Because this was the one secret I had never told him.

Not because I wanted to lie.

Because I was afraid.

“Why does your name appear on this?”” Adrian asked.

My mouth went dry.

Camille looked at me.

And for the first time, she wasn’t afraid for herself.

She was afraid for me.

Lucas slowly stepped back.

“Adrian, there’s something you need to understand.””

I closed my eyes.

Because the truth I had hidden was finally coming out.

The truth about the day Adrian thought he met me.

The truth about the accident.

The truth about the reason I had kept that envelope.

Adrian held the paper tightly.

“Olivia.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Who were you before you became my wife?””

I opened my eyes.

And looked at the man who had just destroyed my heart.

Because now I had to tell him something that might destroy his too.

“I was the person who knew your biggest secret before you ever knew my name.””

No one spoke.

Then Lucas added one final sentence.

And it changed everything.

“Adrian… your wife didn’t enter your life by chance.””

He looked at me.

May you like

“She entered it because three years ago, she saved your life.””

And Adrian’s face turned completely pale.
