Amused

Chapter 4: The Secret I Carried Alone

Adrian stared at me like he was seeing me for the first time.

Not as his wife.

Not as the woman carrying his child.

But as a stranger who had been standing beside him for years while holding a secret he never knew existed.

The room felt smaller.

The walls that had witnessed our happiest memories now felt like they were closing in around us.

“What did he mean?”” Adrian asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

I had heard Adrian shout.

I had heard him accuse me.

I had heard him tell me to leave.

But this was different.

This was the voice of someone afraid of the answer.

I looked at the paper in his hand.

The old document.

The one I had hoped he would never see.

The one I had hidden because I didn’t know how to explain something that sounded impossible.

Three years ago, before I became Olivia Whitmore.

Before the wedding.

Before the baby.

Before Camille.

I was just Olivia Carter.

A woman trying to survive after losing everything.

And that was the year I met Adrian.

Except he didn’t know it.

“Adrian,” I whispered.

He stepped closer.

“No.””

His eyes were filled with questions.

“Don’t protect me anymore.””

The words hurt.

Because that was exactly what I had been doing.

Protecting him.

Even when he didn’t deserve it.

Even when he was the person hurting me.

Lucas moved toward the door.

“I think you two need to talk.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew?””

Lucas nodded slowly.

“I knew Olivia was the woman from that night.””

“What night?””

I closed my eyes.

I could feel the past coming back.

The rain.

The headlights.

The sound of broken glass.

The moment that changed everything.

I swallowed.

“Three years ago, you had a car accident.””

Adrian’s expression shifted.

“I remember.””

“Do you?””

The question surprised him.

“What do you mean?””

I looked at him.

“You remember waking up in the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“You remember the doctors saying you were lucky.””

He nodded.

“My father told me someone called emergency services.””

I looked down.

“That someone was me.””

Silence.

Adrian stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

His face changed.

“But how?””

I took a breath.

“Because I was there.””

The memories returned.

A stormy night.

I had just finished a late shift at the small restaurant where I worked. I was walking home when I saw headlights swerving across the wet road.

A black car hit the barrier near the bridge.

I remember running.

I remember the rain soaking through my clothes.

I remember opening the driver’s door and finding Adrian unconscious.

Back then, I didn’t know his name.

I didn’t know he owned a company.

I didn’t know he would become my husband.

I only knew there was a man who needed help.

“You were trapped inside the car,” I said.

Adrian looked at me.

“You were the person who found me?””

I nodded.

“I called the ambulance. I stayed until they arrived.””

“Why don’t I remember you?””

The question came softly.

And somehow, that hurt more than his anger.

Because I knew the answer.

“Because you never saw me.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“You were barely conscious. The paramedics arrived before you woke up.””

I smiled sadly.

“I was standing behind them when they took you away.””

Adrian looked away.

Processing.

Trying to connect pieces of a story he never knew existed.

“Then how did we meet?””

I looked at him.

“Six months later.””

The memory was painful.

“Your company held a charity event. I was working there.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“That night…”

“Yes.””

“You dropped the tray.””

I nodded.

“And you apologized to me.””

His eyes widened.

“I remember.””

Of course he did.

That was the moment he noticed me.

Not because I saved his life.

Not because fate brought us together.

Because I spilled coffee on his expensive suit.

“You said I looked familiar,” I continued.

Adrian whispered.

“Because you did.””

“I know.””

My fingers tightened around my stomach.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

That question broke something inside me.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because the truth was never simple.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

I looked at him.

“Afraid you would think I only wanted something from you.””

The room went quiet.

“Your family was rich. Powerful. Everyone knew your name.””

I laughed softly.

“I was just a waitress who happened to be there when you crashed your car.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“I would never think that.””

I looked at him.

“Wouldn’t you?””

He didn’t answer.

Because tonight had shown me something.

People could say they knew your heart.

Until the moment they chose to doubt you.

Lucas cleared his throat.

“There’s more.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What more?””

Lucas glanced at me.

I nodded.

Because there was no point hiding anymore.

“After the accident,” I said, “I found something.””

Adrian waited.

“A file.””

His face became tense.

“What file?””

“A file about your father.””

The room froze.

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

“My father?””

I nodded.

“Your father’s company wasn’t destroyed by a random business mistake.””

Lucas stepped forward.

“He was betrayed.””

Adrian stared.

“By who?””

Neither of us spoke.

Because that was the hardest part.

The person behind it was someone Adrian trusted.

Someone close.

Someone who had been standing beside him tonight.

Camille.

Her face turned pale.

“Don’t.””

Adrian slowly looked at her.

“What?””

Camille shook her head.

“Adrian, you can’t believe them.””

“Why not?””

“Because Olivia has been hiding things from you.””

The accusation landed.

And for a moment, I saw the old pattern.

Someone else trying to make me the villain.

But this time, Adrian didn’t immediately believe her.

He just looked tired.

“Camille.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“Did you know about my father?””

Her silence answered before she did.

Adrian took a step back.

“Oh my God.””

“I can explain.””

“You knew?””

“I knew something.””

“Something?””

His voice rose.

“My family lost everything because of that betrayal.””

Camille’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t do it.””

“Then who did?””

She looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

Camille wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone bigger.

Someone more powerful.

Lucas picked up the folder.

“The person who destroyed Adrian’s father wasn’t working alone.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Who?””

Lucas hesitated.

Then he removed one final document.

A photograph was attached.

A photograph that made Adrian stop breathing.

Because the person in it was someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been giving him advice for years.

Adrian reached for the picture.

His hands shook.

“No…”

I watched his face collapse.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

Because Adrian already knew.

The photo showed a meeting.

A secret meeting.

And standing beside Camille’s brother was the person Adrian least expected.

His own mother’s closest friend.

His family’s longtime attorney.

The man who had helped Adrian rebuild his company after his father’s death.

“Victor Hale,” Adrian whispered.

Lucas nodded.

“He was the one who planned everything.””

Adrian looked at me.

Then at the photograph.

Then at Camille.

“You knew.””

Camille’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew his name.””

“And you still came into my life?””

“I was trying to fix it.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“By destroying my marriage?””

Camille had no answer.

I watched Adrian sink into the chair behind him.

The same chair where he used to sit while we planned our baby’s future.

Now he looked completely lost.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

Everyone looked at the screen.

This time, Adrian answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

His face changed.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then Adrian stood.

“What do you mean she knows?””

My heart stopped.

He looked at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

“Who is she talking about?””

The person on the phone said something else.

Adrian’s grip tightened.

Then he whispered:

“Olivia…”

I felt cold.

“What?””

He lowered the phone slowly.

“The person who just called…”

He looked toward the front door.

“She said she has proof that you were never supposed to become my wife.””

I froze.

“What?””

Adrian’s eyes filled with confusion.

“And she said…”

He swallowed.

“She said you weren’t the woman who saved me.””

May you like

A horrible silence followed.

“Because the real person who saved me died three years ago.””
