Amused

Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

Adrian stared at the letter as if the paper in his hands had suddenly become something dangerous.

His fingers trembled.

I had seen Adrian angry before.

I had seen him frustrated, impatient, and even distant.

But I had never seen fear on his face.

Not like this.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

The question wasn’t directed at me.

It was directed at Camille.

Her face had lost all its color.

“Adrian, give me that,” she said quickly.

He pulled the letter away before she could touch it.

“No.””

The firmness in his voice surprised all of us.

Camille blinked.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No,” he repeated.

He looked back down at the page.

The silence in the room became unbearable.

I watched his eyes move from one line to the next.

Every second that passed felt like another piece of my broken life falling into place.

Three days earlier, I had found that letter hidden inside an old file in Adrian’s study.

I wasn’t looking for secrets.

I wasn’t trying to catch him.

I had gone into his office because I wanted to surprise him.

His birthday was coming.

I had planned to organize a small dinner, just the two of us before the baby arrived.

I wanted to remind him of who we used to be.

But instead, I found a folder.

A folder with Camille’s name on it.

At first, I thought it was proof of the affair.

I thought I already knew the worst.

I was wrong.

Because inside that folder was something much bigger.

Something that explained why Camille had entered our lives.

Something that explained why Adrian had changed so suddenly.

Something that could destroy the future they were trying to build.

And now Adrian was finally reading it.

“Adrian,” Camille said softly, stepping closer.

He looked up.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

The woman who had walked into my home with confidence was suddenly unsure of every step.

“What did you know about this?”” Adrian asked.

Camille forced a small laugh.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t lie to me.””

The words echoed through the room.

I almost didn’t recognize him.

Because this was the first time tonight he wasn’t angry at me.

He was angry at her.

Camille looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Olivia gave you this, didn’t she?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I didn’t want you to find it this way.””

Adrian’s eyes moved to me.

“Then why did you have it?””

I swallowed.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust anymore.””

That sentence hurt him.

I could see it.

For the first time, he looked at me like he was realizing how much damage he had caused.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive him.

Not yet.

Not after watching him choose another woman while I carried his child.

“Read the bottom,” I said.

Adrian looked back at the paper.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

I didn’t answer.

He kept reading.

Then he froze.

His lips parted slightly.

“No…”

The sound was barely audible.

Camille immediately stepped forward.

“Adrian, please.””

He looked at her.

“Your brother?””

The room went silent.

My heart pounded.

Because even after everything I had learned, hearing him say it out loud made it real.

Camille’s expression changed.

“Don’t bring him into this.””

“You told me he was gone.””

“He is.””

Adrian lifted the letter.

“Then why does this say he was paid?””

Camille said nothing.

My breath caught.

Paid.

That one word carried a weight I didn’t fully understand.

Adrian looked at me.

“You knew about this?””

“I knew something was wrong.””

I tightened my grip on my handbag.

“I found documents showing payments between Camille and someone named Lucas. I didn’t know who he was at first.””

Adrian’s face changed when he heard the name.

“Lucas Bennett.””

Camille looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“I clearly don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“Because apparently I don’t know anything.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The man who had just thrown me out was now standing in the middle of the room questioning the woman he had chosen.

Life was cruel like that.

Sometimes the truth arrived too late.

Sometimes it arrived exactly when everything was already broken.

Adrian turned the page.

“What does this mean?””

Camille didn’t answer.

“Camille.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“You’re overreacting.””

He laughed once.

A bitter, empty laugh.

“Overreacting?””

He held up the paper.

“You lied about your family. You lied about your past. And now I find out there were payments connected to you?””

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Protect him?

After everything?

Camille turned toward me.

“This is because of her.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?””

“She’s been trying to ruin us.””

I stared at her.

“Ruin you?””

My voice shook.

“You came into my marriage.””

Camille’s expression hardened.

“You never understood Adrian.””

“Apparently neither did you.””

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Adrian looked at me.

And for the first time all night, there was no anger in his eyes.

Only pain.

But then his phone rang.

The sound cut through the room.

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

“Who is it?”” Camille asked.

He didn’t answer.

The phone continued vibrating.

I watched him hesitate.

Then he answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

His face slowly changed.

“Where did you get this number?””

Another pause.

Then his hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.

But Adrian could.

And whatever he heard made him step backward.

“Who are you?””

The room became still.

Camille watched him carefully.

I watched him too.

Because something about this call felt connected.

Connected to the letter.

Connected to the name at the bottom.

Connected to the secret they had both been hiding.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“You’re lying.””

A pause.

“No. That’s impossible.””

His eyes moved toward Camille.

She immediately looked away.

And that was when I knew.

The caller had told him something about her.

Something Camille didn’t want him to hear.

“Adrian,” I whispered.

He covered the phone with his hand.

His eyes met mine.

For a second, I saw the old Adrian.

The man who used to trust me.

The man who used to tell me everything.

“Olivia…”

His voice broke.

“I need you to tell me something.””

I didn’t respond.

“Before tonight… did you know Camille was involved with my company?””

I frowned.

“What?””

His expression became darker.

“The letter mentions a business account.””

I shook my head.

“No. I only found personal documents.””

Adrian looked down at the paper again.

Then at Camille.

“Why did you have access to my company accounts?””

Camille stepped back.

“Adrian, please.””

“No.””

His voice was colder now.

“You answer me.””

She looked at me.

Then at him.

And slowly, the fear on her face turned into anger.

“You really think she’s innocent?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

Camille pointed at me.

“Ask her where she was three months ago.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Camille.””

“No. Ask her.””

My heartbeat quickened.

Because I knew exactly what she was trying to do.

She was changing the subject.

She was searching for a way out.

But then Adrian looked at me.

And for a painful second, I saw doubt.

“Olivia?””

I stared at him.

“You’re asking me?””

“I just want the truth.””

I almost couldn’t believe those words.

The truth.

After months of lies.

After betrayal.

After he abandoned me.

He wanted the truth from me.

I took a slow breath.

“Fine.””

I stepped closer.

“You want the truth?””

Adrian nodded.

“Tell me.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“The day I found out about Camille wasn’t the day I learned everything.””

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

I reached into my bag.

Not for another letter.

Not for proof.

For something else.

Something I had kept hidden because I was afraid.

“I found out something else before I came here tonight.””

Adrian stared at me.

“What?””

I looked at Camille.

Her eyes widened.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what I was about to reveal.

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak—

The front door suddenly opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Angrier.

And carrying a file identical to the one Adrian held.

He looked straight at Camille.

Then at me.

Then at Adrian.

“I see you finally found out.””

Camille whispered one word.

“Lucas…”

The man stepped inside.

And the next sentence he spoke made Adrian drop the letter from his hand.

“Your wife isn’t the woman who betrayed you, Adrian.””

May you like

He looked at Camille.

“She’s the woman who tried to save you.””
