Chapter 7: The Woman Who Never Left
The photograph shook in my hand.
I stared at it until my eyes burned.
My mother.
Alive.
Standing beside Victor Carter.
The man who had spent the last hour acting like he knew everything about my family.
The man who claimed he understood the past.
The man who told me I needed to learn the truth.
But the truth was staring back at me from my phone screen.
My mother had not disappeared.
She had been hidden.
“Jessi?””
Daniel’s voice sounded far away.
I couldn’t answer.
I just kept looking at the picture.
Her face.
Her eyes.
The same eyes I saw every morning when I looked in the mirror.
For years, I had carried a memory of my mother that wasn’t even real.
A memory built from other people’s lies.
“She’s alive.””
The words came out as a whisper.
Nobody moved.
Luca looked at my phone.
Then at Daniel.
“What is that?””
I stepped away.
Not because I was afraid of him.
Because I didn’t know who he was anymore.
“My mother.””
Luca’s face changed.
“What?””
“She was alive after she disappeared.””
Daniel took the phone from my hand.
He studied the picture.
His expression slowly collapsed.
“No.””
I watched him.
“You knew she was gone.””
“Yes.””
“But you never knew this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
For the first time, Daniel looked lost.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Lost.
Then Luca stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
I almost refused.
But something stopped me.
Maybe because I needed to know.
Maybe because some part of me still believed there was a piece of Luca that had been telling the truth.
He looked at the photograph.
And froze.
“Where did you get this?””
I stared at him.
“You tell me.””
His eyes stayed on the screen.
“Jessi…”
“Who sent it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who sent it, Luca?””
“I don’t know.””
“Another lie.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I swear.””
I looked at him.
The man who had hidden the biggest secret of my life.
The man who had betrayed me.
The man who was somehow also shocked by the same revelation.
I didn’t know what to believe.
Daniel handed my phone back.
“We need to find out where this came from.””
“No.””
Both men looked at me.
I held the phone tightly.
“I’m done following everyone else’s instructions.””
I looked at Daniel.
“My aunt left clues.””
I looked at Luca.
“My husband hid the truth.””
I looked toward the door Victor walked through.
“And his father has been manipulating everyone.””
My voice became steadier.
“I’m done being the person everyone protects by lying to.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
I picked up Margaret’s letter again.
There was one sentence I hadn’t understood before.
*Some people mistake kindness for weakness.*
My aunt knew exactly what kind of battle I was walking into.
She knew I would need to stop being the woman who trusted everyone.
And become the woman who asked questions.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Where did Margaret keep her private records?””
He hesitated.
“Jessi…”
“Where?””
He sighed.
“The Sterling Tower archive room.””
I nodded.
“Then that’s where we’re going.””
Luca immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
I turned.
“No?””
“It’s not safe.””
I almost smiled.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“For eleven years, you never cared whether I was safe when you kept secrets from me.””
His face fell.
“Jessi.””
“No.””
I grabbed my coat.
“If there’s something in that archive room, I’m going to find it.””
Daniel looked at Luca.
Then at me.
“I’ll take you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
They both looked surprised.
“I’m going alone.””
“That’s a bad idea,” Luca said.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if someone is hiding things, they’ll know you’re looking.””
I stepped closer.
“Exactly.””
I watched him carefully.
“And maybe it’s time they know I’m looking.””
The Sterling Tower was different at night.
During the day, it was a symbol of power.
Glass walls.
Corporate offices.
People in expensive suits moving quickly through polished hallways.
But after midnight, it felt empty.
Like a giant body without a heartbeat.
Daniel gave me an old access card.
“Margaret’s archive room is on the forty-second floor.””
I looked at the card.
“You still had access?””
“I was her assistant before everything happened.””
I looked at him.
“My cousin was my aunt’s assistant?””
He nodded.
“Margaret trusted me.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me everything?””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Victor?””
“Yes.””
“Of Luca?””
A pause.
“Not at first.””
That answer stayed with me.
Not at first.
Meaning something changed.
The elevator doors opened.
The forty-second floor was dark.
Only emergency lights were on.
I stepped out.
Daniel followed.
“I thought you said you wouldn’t come.””
He gave a small, sad smile.
“I said you shouldn’t come alone.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
He looked ahead.
“But Margaret would have done the same.””
We reached the archive door.
Daniel inserted the card.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
“That’s strange.””
“What?””
“This door should never lock.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Margaret believed records should never disappear.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone changed that.””
Daniel nodded.
Before he could answer, a sound came from behind us.
A footstep.
We turned.
The hallway was empty.
“Hello?””
No answer.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And suddenly the archive door unlocked.
By itself.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Someone wants us inside.””
“Yes.””
“Then let’s find out why.””
I opened the door.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Everything Margaret had collected.
Everything someone had tried to hide.
I walked toward the nearest box.
A label was written on it.
*STERLING FAMILY — PERSONAL.*
I opened it.
Inside were old letters.
Bank statements.
And a small envelope with my name.
*JESSI.*
My hands shook.
“This is for me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Margaret.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t my aunt’s.
It was my mother’s.
My breathing stopped.
*Dear Jessi,*
I sat down.
Because my legs couldn’t hold me.
*If you are reading this, then Margaret failed to keep you away from the truth. I’m sorry. I wanted you to have a normal life.*
Tears blurred the words.
*I never left you because I wanted to.*
I covered my mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Giving me privacy.
I continued.
*The night everything happened, I discovered Victor Carter had been stealing from Sterling Holdings. But I also discovered something worse. He wasn’t working alone.*
My heart pounded.
Not alone.
*Someone inside Sterling helped him. Someone Margaret trusted. Someone we never suspected.*
I turned the page.
The next line made my entire body freeze.
*The person who helped Victor was not Luca.*
I exhaled.
A strange relief.
But it disappeared instantly.
Because the next sentence was worse.
*It was someone who raised you.*
I stopped reading.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t speak.
My mother’s handwriting stared back at me.
Someone who raised you.
Someone who raised me.
I read the rest.
*I couldn’t tell you because the person was still close to you. They would have found a way to silence you too.*
My fingers trembled.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Jessi.””
I looked up.
“My mother knew.””
“Knew what?””
I slowly turned the page.
The final sentence was written darker than the others.
Almost like she pressed the pen too hard.
*The person you call family is the reason I disappeared.*
The archive room became silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time, no unknown number.
A name appeared.
Someone I never expected.
*Mom.*
My hands went numb.
Impossible.
The message opened.
Only six words.
*“Jessi, don’t trust Daniel Sterling.””*
I looked up.
Daniel was standing right in front of me.
And for the first time that night…
May you like
I wondered if he had brought me here to reveal the truth.
Or to make sure I found it.
