Chapter 10: The Name I Chose
The silence after Victor’s call was worse than the call itself.
Because everyone had a reaction.
Everyone except Luca.
My mother looked devastated.
Daniel looked angry.
Luca looked like a man who had been carrying a secret so heavy that he had finally run out of strength to hold it.
And me?
I felt nothing.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because my mind had gone completely still.
“Tell me.””
My voice was quiet.
Luca looked at me.
“Jessi…”
“Tell me.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t know how to explain.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Of course you didn’t.””
I looked at my mother.
“Was he telling the truth?””
She closed her eyes.
That was all I needed.
The answer was yes.
My children were upstairs.
My husband was standing in front of me.
My mother, who I thought I lost forever, was alive.
And somehow, after all of that, there was still another secret waiting.
I walked to the dining table and sat down.
“Everyone sits.””
Nobody moved.
“Now.””
Something in my voice made them listen.
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t asking for the truth.
I was demanding it.
My mother sat across from me.
Daniel beside her.
Luca remained standing.
I looked at him.
“Sit.””
He did.
I folded my hands.
“Start at the beginning.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother took a breath.
“Your name was never Jessi Carter.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
She looked surprised.
“What?””
“I know my name was Sterling.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“But that’s not all.””
My fingers tightened.
“Keep going.””
She looked down.
“When I gave birth to you, there was a complication.””
I stayed silent.
“The doctors believed you wouldn’t survive.””
A pain moved through her face.
“But you did.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
She looked at me.
“Your father and I were afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of Victor.””
The name had become a shadow over my entire life.
“He knew about the Sterling inheritance. He knew about Margaret’s plans. He knew that if anything happened to me, you would eventually become the person controlling everything.””
I frowned.
“But why would that matter? I was a baby.””
“Because Victor didn’t want you to inherit.””
Daniel continued.
“He wanted someone else to.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then my mother whispered:
“Luca.””
I looked at him.
He looked away.
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Luca finally spoke.
“My father wanted me to become your legal guardian.””
The room went silent.
“Guardian?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if you disappeared, if your identity changed, if something happened to Margaret…”
He stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“He would control everything.””
Luca nodded.
I stared at him.
“And you knew?””
“No.””
His answer came instantly.
“I swear, Jessi, I didn’t know that part.””
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
After everything, some part of me still wanted to believe him.
My mother reached across the table.
“Luca was young. He made terrible choices.””
I looked at her.
“Mom.””
She stopped.
“You don’t get to defend him.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
I pointed around the room.
“All of you made choices for me.””
The words came faster.
“You decided what I could handle.””
“You decided what truths I deserved.””
“You decided when I was allowed to know my own life.””
Nobody spoke.
“And then you wonder why I don’t trust anyone.””
My mother cried silently.
Daniel looked away.
Luca looked broken.
But I wasn’t finished.
“What happened to my identity?””
My mother wiped her face.
“Margaret changed the records.””
“Why?””
“To hide you.””
“From Victor.””
“Yes.””
I nodded slowly.
“So I became Jessi Carter.””
“Yes.””
“And you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Because you thought being without a mother was safer than being hunted.””
Her face collapsed.
“I thought I could come back.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
The honesty hurt.
“I tried.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Because every time I got close, Victor knew.””
A chill moved through me.
“How?””
Daniel answered.
“Because he had someone inside Sterling.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Luca.
Luca shook his head.
“Not me.””
“I didn’t say you.””
The room went still.
Daniel opened a file.
“I found this in Margaret’s private archive.””
He pushed a document toward me.
A list of names.
Employees.
Partners.
Family members.
I scanned it.
Then stopped.
One name was highlighted.
My hands froze.
“No.””
My mother looked at me.
“What?””
I looked up.
“The person who helped Victor.””
I pointed at the page.
“It was…”
I couldn’t say it.
Luca leaned forward.
His face changed.
“Impossible.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what Margaret thought too.””
I stared at the name.
The person who had been near me my entire childhood.
The person who had comforted me.
Protected me.
Raised me.
The person I had trusted.
The person Victor had used.
My aunt’s longtime assistant.
The person everyone thought was loyal.
Margaret’s closest friend.
The person who had managed Sterling records for thirty years.
“Evelyn.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The final piece fell into place.
Evelyn had known everything.
She knew about the inheritance.
She knew about my identity.
She knew about my mother.
And she had been quietly feeding information to Victor.
“But why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Victor promised her control.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone wanted control.””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“And Margaret knew that.””
I looked at the files.
“What did Margaret leave me?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Not money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She knew money was exactly what destroyed this family.””
He opened another envelope.
Inside was a letter.
This time, I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Margaret.
*Dear Jessi,*
*If you have reached this point, then you finally know the truth.*
I smiled sadly.
Even after death, she still sounded like herself.
*You may feel betrayed by everyone around you. You have every right to. But remember this: people are not defined only by the mistakes they make. They are defined by what they do after they finally face them.*
My eyes moved to Luca.
He looked down.
*I left Sterling Tower to you because you were the only person who never wanted it.*
I stopped.
*You loved people more than power. That was always your greatest strength.*
I continued reading.
*But now you must decide what kind of person you want to become. Someone who lets betrayal define her, or someone who builds something better from the ashes.*
The letter ended with one final sentence.
*Your name was never your inheritance. Your choices were.*
I folded the letter.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Luca stood.
“I’m leaving.””
I looked at him.
He nodded.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
I said nothing.
“I know I hurt you.””
His voice broke.
“But I want you to know something.””
I waited.
“The day I met you wasn’t part of a plan.””
I looked away.
“Luca.””
“No, let me finish.””
He took a breath.
“I loved you before I understood what your family was.””
His eyes filled.
“And I hated myself when I realized those things were connected.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time I tried, I was afraid I would lose you.””
A painful smile crossed his face.
“And eventually, I made choices that guaranteed I would.””
That was the truth.
Not an excuse.
Just the truth.
Weeks passed after that night.
The investigation into Victor and Evelyn changed everything.
The hidden accounts.
The stolen assets.
The years of manipulation.
Everything came out.
Sterling Tower became mine legally.
But I changed the name of the company.
Not because I hated the Sterling name.
Because I wanted it to mean something different.
I created a foundation in my mother’s name.
A place for families who lost someone and never got answers.
A place where secrets didn’t have to survive.
Luca cooperated fully with the investigation.
He lost his company.
His reputation.
Most of his friends.
But he never stopped showing up for Fiona and Leo.
And slowly, painfully, he started becoming someone else.
Not the man I married.
Not the man who hurt me.
Someone new.
Someone accountable.
One year later, I stood on the roof of Sterling Tower.
The city stretched beneath me.
Millions of people.
Millions of stories.
My mother stood beside me.
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t afraid of losing her.
Because I finally understood something.
People can disappear.
Truth can be buried.
Families can break.
But the past only controls you if you let it.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Fiona.
*Mom, Leo says you have to come home because he made pancakes and they are terrible.*
I laughed.
Then another message appeared.
From Luca.
*Thank you for letting me be their father. I know I don’t deserve it.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed one word.
*“Try.””*
Because forgiveness wasn’t forgetting.
It wasn’t pretending nothing happened.
It was giving someone the chance to prove they could become better.
I looked out over the city.
Years ago, everyone had tried to decide who I was.
A daughter.
An heir.
A wife.
An asset.
A mistake.
But they were all wrong.
Because my greatest inheritance was never the tower.
Never the money.
Never the Sterling name.
It was the moment I finally chose myself.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I knew exactly who I was.
