Amused

Chapter 5: The Contract Hidden In Our Vows

The room went silent after Victor’s words.

Not the kind of silence that comes after an argument.

The kind that comes when everyone is afraid of what will be said next.

I stared at the document on the table.

My marriage license.

Eleven years of my life reduced to a piece of paper in a folder held by a man who had walked into my home like he owned the air around him.

Victor Carter smiled.

A small, confident smile.

The same kind Luca used when he thought he had already won.

And suddenly I understood where Luca learned it.

“Final step?”” I repeated.

My voice sounded distant.

“What does that mean?””

Victor looked at his son.

“Tell her.””

Luca’s face changed.

“Dad.””

“Tell her.””

The command wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Luca looked like a child again.

Not a businessman.

Not the man who had stood on my porch with divorce papers.

Just a son afraid of disappointing his father.

I looked between them.

“You knew.””

Luca shook his head.

“Not like this.””

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victor sighed.

“Always the same problem with you, Luca. You hesitate when the truth becomes inconvenient.””

That sentence made something inside me snap.

I stepped toward Victor.

“You don’t get to walk into my house and talk about truth.””

His eyes moved to me.

For the first time, he looked interested.

“Your house.””

He smiled.

“How quickly things change.””

I ignored the insult.

“What was the final step?””

Victor picked up the document.

“Your aunt Margaret was protecting assets that belonged to the Sterling family. Assets that should have been transferred years ago.””

“Transferred to who?””

He looked at me.

“Someone responsible.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor glanced at him.

“Still pretending you’re the hero, Daniel?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’re the reason Margaret spent her final years afraid.””

Victor laughed.

“Afraid? Margaret was always dramatic.””

I watched Daniel’s hands tighten into fists.

That reaction told me more than words could.

This wasn’t a family disagreement.

This was something that had been burning for decades.

I looked back at Victor.

“What does this have to do with me?””

He walked closer.

“Everything.””

Luca suddenly spoke.

“Dad, stop.””

Victor turned.

“Why? Because she might finally understand what you’ve done?””

Luca looked pale.

I felt a chill.

“What I’ve done?””

Victor ignored me.

“You married her. You gained access to Sterling property. You built your company using connections you wouldn’t have had otherwise.””

He paused.

“And then you got sentimental.””

Luca looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“You were supposed to follow the plan.””

Plan.

That word echoed.

I looked at Luca.

“Was there a plan?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

I had spent eleven years defending this man.

Eleven years telling myself that love could survive anything.

But love couldn’t survive being treated like a business transaction.

Not when one person was the investment.

And the other was the investor.

I picked up the marriage document.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Daniel moved closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed it to him.

He scanned the page.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You actually did this?””

Victor shrugged.

“Business is business.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he pointed at a paragraph near the bottom.

“There’s a hidden financial agreement attached to the marriage documents.””

I frowned.

“A financial agreement?””

Luca stepped forward.

“Jessi, I didn’t sign that.””

Victor looked amused.

“Of course you didn’t.””

The room froze.

I turned slowly.

“What does that mean?””

Victor looked directly at Luca.

“You didn’t need to.””

Luca’s face went white.

“Dad…”

Victor continued.

“The agreement was between me and the investors.””

My stomach dropped.

“Investors?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Your marriage was used as proof that Sterling assets would eventually become accessible.””

I stared at Luca.

“You were collateral.””

His expression broke.

And somehow, that was the first time all night I saw genuine pain on his face.

Not guilt.

Pain.

Because maybe he had spent years pretending he was in control.

And now I was seeing the truth.

He had been controlled too.

But that didn’t excuse what he did to me.

“You knew enough,” I said.

Luca swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Enough to marry me.””

“Yes.””

“Enough to build a company using my family name.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

The worst part was no longer the betrayal.

It was realizing how long I had been living inside someone else’s story.

A story where I was never the main character.

Victor walked toward the table.

“You’re emotional right now. That’s understandable.””

I looked at him.

“Emotional?””

He smiled.

“You’re young. You don’t understand how the world works.””

I almost laughed.

“You walked into my home after your son tried to throw me out and told me I don’t understand the world?””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

Good.

I wanted him angry.

Because angry people reveal themselves.

“You should be careful, Jessi.””

The warning was quiet.

But clear.

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

“Leave.””

Victor looked at him.

“This doesn’t concern you.””

“It concerns Margaret.””

Victor’s expression changed at the mention of her name.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“What did she leave her?””

Victor asked.

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved to me.

“What exactly did Margaret give you?””

I smiled.

Because finally I understood something.

He wasn’t here because he cared.

He wasn’t here because he wanted to explain.

He was here because he was afraid.

“She gave me everything.””

Victor’s face tightened.

“Impossible.””

That one word told me everything.

He knew.

He knew exactly what Margaret had done.

I stepped closer.

“She gave me Sterling Tower.””

His expression changed.

“She gave me the house.””

A pause.

“And she gave me control of the assets you’ve been trying to reach for years.””

The confidence disappeared from his face.

For the first time, Victor Carter looked worried.

But then he smiled again.

A different smile.

A dangerous one.

“Then you really don’t know what she gave you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He reached into his folder.

He pulled out another document.

“This.””

He placed it in front of me.

A legal agreement.

My name was at the top.

But this time, there was something else.

A signature.

My mother’s.

My breath caught.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel moved quickly.

“Jessi, don’t touch it.””

But I already had.

The paper felt real.

Too real.

My mother’s handwriting.

Her signature.

A date.

A date from before she disappeared.

I looked at Victor.

“What is this?””

He leaned closer.

“Proof that Margaret wasn’t the only person who wanted you to inherit Sterling.””

I stared at the page.

Then at him.

“Who else?””

Victor smiled.

“Your mother.””

The room tilted.

“My mother wanted me to inherit?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Someone had made sure I never knew.

I looked at Luca.

His face was full of shock.

Not fake shock.

Real shock.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

And that terrified me.

Because for the first time, Luca and I were standing on the same side of the mystery.

Both of us had been kept in the dark.

Victor collected his papers.

“You have forty-eight hours.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“To decide whether you want the truth.””

I laughed.

“I already do.””

His eyes narrowed.

“No.””

He stepped toward the door.

“You want revenge.””

The word hung in the air.

I didn’t answer.

Because maybe he was wrong.

Maybe I didn’t want revenge.

Maybe I just wanted my life back.

Victor opened the door.

Before leaving, he turned.

“Ask your husband what happened the night your mother disappeared.””

I froze.

Luca froze.

Daniel looked horrified.

Victor smiled.

“Because Luca remembers.””

Then he walked away.

The door closed.

And suddenly, the man who had betrayed me was the only person left who might know the truth.

I turned slowly toward Luca.

He looked like he wanted to run.

“Luca.””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

His eyes filled with something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not of losing money.

Not of losing the house.

Fear of the past coming back.

“I was there,” he whispered.

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“The night your mother disappeared.””

The room went completely still.

I could barely breathe.

“What did you do?””

Luca looked at me.

May you like

And his answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“I didn’t save her.””
