Chapter 3: The Secret Margaret Buried
I stared at the message on Luca’s phone.
Not because of Daniel’s words.
Because of Luca’s reaction.
For years, I had watched my husband negotiate million-dollar contracts, stand in front of executives, and convince entire rooms of people to believe in his vision.
But now?
Now he looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
“Tell me about my mother.””
The words came out quietly.
Almost too quietly.
Luca didn’t answer.
He looked at the phone.
Then at me.
Then away.
That was when I knew.
Whatever secret existed between him and my aunt wasn’t just about money.
It was about me.
“Luca.””
He swallowed.
“Jessi, this is complicated.””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“Complicated?””
I held up Margaret’s letter.
“My aunt wrote that you came to her asking about my inheritance before we were married.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The silence was the answer.
I stepped backward.
For years, I had searched for the moment when my marriage started falling apart.
The first lie.
The first betrayal.
The first time Luca stopped seeing me as his wife and started seeing me as an obstacle.
Maybe I had been looking in the wrong direction.
Maybe the marriage hadn’t broken.
Maybe it had been built wrong from the beginning.
“Where is Chloe?”” I asked.
Luca frowned.
“What?””
“I said where is Chloe?””
“She left.””
“Good.””
I folded the letter carefully.
“Because I don’t want anyone else here until I know exactly what my husband has been hiding.””
His expression hardened.
“I’m still your husband.””
The sentence hit me harder than he probably intended.
Because it sounded like a warning.
Not a reminder.
I looked at him.
“No, Luca.””
I placed the letter on the table.
“You’re someone who has a legal marriage certificate with me.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You don’t get to use that word like it still means the same thing.””
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then footsteps came from upstairs.
“Mom?””
I immediately turned.
Fiona stood halfway down the staircase, holding her stuffed rabbit.
My anger disappeared instantly.
“Sweetheart, why are you awake?””
She rubbed her eyes.
“I heard yelling.””
I looked at Luca.
He looked away.
I forced a smile.
“Everything’s okay.””
But Fiona was eight years old.
Not eight months.
She knew when adults were lying.
“Are you and Daddy fighting because of that lady?””
The question landed between us.
Luca closed his eyes.
I saw shame.
Real shame.
But it came too late.
I walked to Fiona and knelt down.
“Go back to bed, okay?””
“Are you leaving?””
The question again.
Always the same fear.
I held her hands.
“No.””
“Promise?””
I looked into my daughter’s eyes.
“I promise I’m not leaving you.””
That was the only promise I could make.
She nodded slowly and went back upstairs.
When she disappeared, I turned around.
“Now talk.””
Luca sat down.
For the first time that night, he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“You might hate me afterward.””
I almost smiled.
“Luca, that happened when you put my bags outside.””
He looked down.
“My first meeting with Margaret was before we got married.””
I stayed silent.
“I was trying to grow my company. I had investors interested, but I needed security.””
“Security?””
He nodded.
“Connections. Assets. Someone who could open doors.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“And you thought my family could do that.””
He didn’t deny it.
“At first, yes.””
There it was.
The first honest thing he had said all day.
“At first?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Jessi, I did fall in love with you.””
I looked away.
Because somehow that made it worse.
A stranger using me would have been easier.
But someone who loved me and still chose to use me?
That was harder to understand.
“When did you meet Margaret?””
“Six months after we started dating.””
I froze.
Six months.
Before engagement.
Before marriage.
Before children.
“You met my aunt and asked about my inheritance.””
“I asked about the family business.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I was ambitious.””
The honesty almost shocked me.
“You were ambitious?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I was desperate.””
I stared at him.
Luca Carter was never supposed to be desperate.
That was the image he built.
The successful businessman.
The self-made man.
The person everyone admired.
“What happened?””
He looked toward the window.
“When I was younger, my father lost everything. Our house. Our savings. Everything.””
I knew this story.
Or I thought I did.
Luca had told me his childhood was difficult.
He told me he wanted to become successful because he never wanted his family to struggle again.
But now there was something missing.
“Margaret helped him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My father knew your grandfather.””
The room became silent.
“My father worked for Sterling Holdings years ago. Margaret knew him.””
I slowly sat down.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?””
“Because Margaret didn’t want anyone knowing.””
“Why?””
Luca looked at me.
“Because she knew what kind of man my father was.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, headlights appeared outside the window.
A car pulled into the driveway.
Neither of us moved.
Luca’s face changed.
“You need to talk to Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“You’re afraid of him.””
“No.””
“You are.””
He stood.
“Jessi, listen to me. Daniel has hated me for years.””
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because he thinks I destroyed your family.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Before Luca could answer, the front door opened.
A man stepped inside.
He was older than Luca.
Maybe early fifties.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
And the same serious expression Margaret always had when she knew something important.
“Jessi.””
His voice was softer than I expected.
“I’m sorry it took this long.””
I stood.
“Daniel?””
He nodded.
His eyes moved around the house.
Then landed on the letter in my hand.
“She finally gave it to you.””
I tightened my grip.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked at Luca.
Then back at me.
“Because I helped her write it.””
Luca immediately stepped forward.
“You had no right.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No right?””
He laughed quietly.
“That’s interesting coming from you.””
“Don’t do this here.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she deserves the truth?””
Luca’s face went pale.
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
And my entire body froze.
The picture showed my mother.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside Margaret.
And beside them…
Was Luca’s father.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
The shocking part was the person standing next to him.
A man I recognized immediately.
Because I had seen him my entire life.
In old family albums.
At the bottom of framed pictures.
A man my mother always called “an old family friend.””
Daniel watched my face carefully.
“You know who that is?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I did.
It was my grandfather.
The man who supposedly died before I was born.
But in the photograph, he wasn’t dead.
He was standing there.
Holding a document.
A document with the Sterling family seal.
My hands began to shake.
“Why do you have this?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Because that picture was taken three weeks before your mother disappeared.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
Luca looked at me.
Even he looked shocked.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Your mother didn’t abandon your family like you were told.””
The room became completely silent.
“My aunt told everyone she left.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Luca.
Then at me.
“Because someone wanted her gone.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward the table and placed another folder beside Margaret’s letter.
“This contains the reason your aunt left everything to you.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked at me with sadness.
“Proof that your mother was trying to expose a fraud inside the Sterling family.””
My fingers touched the folder.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at Luca.
And said the words that made my blood turn cold.
“The same person who has been controlling your husband’s company for the last five years.””
I turned toward Luca.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t deny it.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because I finally understood.
The house.
The inheritance.
The affair.
The divorce papers.
They were not separate disasters.
They were pieces of the same story.
And the missing piece was sitting in front of me.
Then Daniel opened the folder.
The first page slid onto the table.
At the top was a name.
A name I had never expected to see.
*Jessi Carter.*
Not as an owner.
Not as an heir.
May you like
But as the victim in a legal investigation dated eleven years earlier.
The exact year I married Luca.
