Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Wheel
Vanessa stood perfectly still.
Her eyes moved from the hospital bracelet to the folded note in Daniel's hand.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she said:
"Put it back.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because it doesn't belong to you.""
"It's my first wife's hospital bracelet.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
She stepped into the room.
Daniel moved between us.
"Mrs. Bennett, please remain where you are.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"Marcus, I can explain everything.""
"Good. Start with the note.""
She looked at the paper.
Then she looked at me.
"Laura was confused that night.""
"Confused about what?""
"She had been under a lot of stress.""
"Why does the note say someone else was driving?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Because she wasn't thinking clearly.""
I felt anger rising.
"Are you telling me my wife imagined her own accident?""
Vanessa looked away.
"That's not what I said.""
"Then tell me who was driving.""
Silence.
Daniel took out his phone.
"I'm contacting Detective Harris.""
Vanessa suddenly turned toward him.
"Don't.""
Daniel stopped.
She looked at me.
"Marcus, please. I don't want this to become something it isn't.""
I stared at her.
"Thirteen years ago, I buried my wife. I raised our daughter believing she died in a car accident while driving home from an appointment. Now I find a note saying she wasn't driving. You don't get to tell me this isn't serious.""
Vanessa began crying.
"Richard was driving.""
The words came out so quietly that I almost didn't hear them.
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Richard was driving.""
Daniel looked up sharply.
Vanessa continued.
"He was supposed to take Laura to the clinic. They argued in the car. She wanted to get out.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Why was he taking her?""
"Because he was trying to get her to sign the agreement.""
"What agreement?""
"The inheritance authorization.""
I stepped closer.
"Why was Maya in the car?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"Richard said Laura wanted to bring her.""
I looked at the bracelet.
"Then what happened?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Richard lost control of the vehicle.""
"How?""
"He was angry. He was shouting. Laura tried to take the keys.""
My stomach twisted.
"Did the car crash?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"And Richard?""
"He got out.""
"Did he call an ambulance?""
She looked down.
I felt my voice break.
"Did he call an ambulance?""
"No.""
The room seemed to disappear around me.
"Who called?""
"Someone driving past.""
I stared at her.
"Where were you?""
Vanessa began shaking.
"I was in the other car.""
"What other car?""
"I was following them.""
I stepped backward.
"Why?""
"Because Richard asked me to.""
Daniel was typing something into his phone.
I could barely think.
"Why did you follow them?""
Vanessa's voice became smaller.
"Because I had the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The agreement Laura refused to sign.""
I looked at her.
"After the accident, you went to the hospital.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Richard called me.""
"To do what?""
She started crying harder.
"To make sure the papers weren't found.""
My blood ran cold.
"What papers?""
"The medical authorization. The inheritance documents. Everything.""
I looked at Daniel.
He had stopped typing.
"Mrs. Bennett," he said carefully, "are you admitting that you entered the hospital room after the accident?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did you remove anything?""
She looked at the bracelet.
"I took the documents from Laura's bag.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard said they could destroy us.""
I stared at her.
"Destroy you?""
She looked up.
"Marcus, you need to understand. We weren't trying to hurt Laura.""
"She was your brother's passenger.""
"We were trying to protect ourselves.""
"From what?""
"From the truth.""
I felt something break inside me.
"What truth?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Richard had been using the trust money.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Before your mother established the final agreement, Richard had arranged several transfers through a business account. He said he was investing the money for Maya.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
"That matches some of the financial irregularities.""
Vanessa continued.
"Laura found out. She threatened to tell you and your mother. Richard panicked.""
"Why did he introduce you to me?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because he wanted someone inside the family.""
The words landed like a slap.
I stepped backward.
"You married me to get access to Maya's inheritance?""
She shook her head.
"At first, yes.""
I stared at her.
She continued quickly.
"But then things changed.""
"How?""
"I fell in love with you.""
I laughed.
It was an ugly, broken sound.
"You fell in love with me?""
"Marcus, I did.""
"You let my daughter wear a filthy school blouse while you spent her inheritance.""
"I was trying to fix things.""
"You tried to send her away!""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"Because the money was almost gone!""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"What?""
She covered her mouth.
But it was too late.
"Almost gone?""
She looked at the floor.
"Richard had debts. He needed money. I thought if I could get control of Maya's account, I could replace everything before anyone noticed.""
"How much was missing?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mrs. Bennett, where did the money go?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I don't know all of it.""
"Who does?""
"Richard.""
Daniel immediately called the detective.
I stood in front of Vanessa.
"Tell me about Laura's death.""
She shook her head.
"I already told you.""
"No. You told me what happened in the car. I want to know what happened afterward.""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Richard left the scene.""
"Why?""
"He was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Being arrested.""
I felt sick.
"And you?""
"I stayed in the second vehicle.""
"Did you see Laura?""
She nodded.
"She was alive when the ambulance arrived.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did she speak?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"She asked for Maya.""
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"Did you let her see her daughter?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Why?""
"Richard told me not to.""
I stared at her.
"She was dying, and you kept her daughter away from her?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I was afraid.""
I turned away.
I couldn't look at her.
Daniel finished his call.
"Detective Harris is coming. Nobody leaves.""
Vanessa sank into the chair.
For the first time, she looked small.
But I wasn't interested in her fear.
I was thinking about Laura.
About the hospital.
About the final moments of her life.
About a woman who had asked to see her daughter and never got the chance.
I picked up the note again.
There was writing on the reverse side.
I hadn't noticed it before.
I turned it over.
Three names were listed.
Richard Cole.
Vanessa Cole.
And a third name.
Dr. Helen Morris.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why is the doctor here?""
She covered her face.
"She was supposed to certify the medical documents.""
"What medical documents?""
"The ones Richard needed to prove Laura had consented to the changes.""
"Changes to what?""
"The inheritance.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Was Laura ever declared mentally incapable?""
He shook his head.
"Not in the records we've seen.""
Vanessa whispered:
"Richard wanted her declared unstable.""
My stomach tightened.
"And you helped him?""
She nodded.
The detective arrived twenty minutes later.
He separated us and began taking statements.
Vanessa repeated parts of what she had told us, but she refused to sign anything without legal representation.
The detective explained that the information would need to be independently verified.
He also informed us that Richard was being located for questioning.
I stood near the front window while Daniel spoke with the officers.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Tyler.
*Dad, please call me. It's about Mom.*
I immediately called him.
He answered breathlessly.
"Are you okay?""
"Yes. Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Is Maya with you?""
"No. She's with Aunt Rebecca.""
I frowned.
"What's wrong?""
Tyler lowered his voice.
"Mom came back here earlier.""
My stomach tightened.
"When?""
"Why?""
"She said she needed something from her bedroom.""
"What did she take?""
"I don't know.""
I closed my eyes.
"Tyler, listen carefully. Don't let her take anything else. Don't follow her. Just stay with Ethan and Noah.""
"Dad, there's something else.""
"What?""
Tyler hesitated.
"Mom left a folder in the garage.""
"What folder?""
"I opened it.""
My chest tightened.
"What was inside?""
"Documents about Maya.""
I gripped the phone.
"What documents?""
Tyler swallowed.
"An adoption application.""
I went completely still.
"An adoption application?""
"Yes.""
"Whose name is on it?""
Tyler took a breath.
Then he said:
"Richard Cole.""
I stared at the wall.
"Richard wanted to adopt Maya?""
Tyler's voice cracked.
"Not exactly.""
"What do you mean?""
"There's another page.""
"What page?""
Tyler was silent for several seconds.
Then he whispered:
"Mom was listed as Maya's legal guardian, and Richard was listed as the person who would receive custody if Mom couldn't continue.""
I felt sick.
The detective turned toward me.
He could see something was wrong.
I continued speaking to Tyler.
"Take photographs of everything. Don't move the documents.""
"Okay.""
"And Tyler?""
"Yes?""
"Thank you for telling me.""
He hesitated.
"There's one more thing, Dad.""
"What?""
"Mom wrote something on the back of the application.""
I gripped the phone harder.
"What?""
Tyler read the words slowly.
*Once Marcus is out of the way, everything belongs to us.*
I closed my eyes.
Because now I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to send Maya away.
She hadn't simply wanted control of my daughter's inheritance.
May you like
She had been building a future in which neither Maya nor I would have the power to stop her.
And Richard had been waiting for that future for thirteen years.
