Amused

Chapter 6: The Agreement My Mother Hid

I waited until Vanessa left the living room before I returned to the office.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid of her.

Because I was beginning to understand that my mother had known something about the future of our family long before I married Vanessa.

I closed the office door and called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"I found something.""

"What?""

I read him the final paragraph of my mother's letter.

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he asked:

"Did you say there was a document she signed with me?""

"Yes.""

"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully. Your mother left a separate legal agreement with my office. I was instructed not to release it until Maya reached a certain age or a specific condition was triggered.""

"What condition?""

"An attempt to transfer control of her inheritance without your authorization.""

I looked at the financial folder.

"Has that condition been triggered?""

"Based on what you've told me, absolutely.""

"Then I want the document.""

"I'll bring it first thing tomorrow morning.""

"Daniel, I need it tonight.""

"I have a scanned copy. I'll send it securely.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why didn't you tell me about this before?""

"Your mother specifically instructed me not to discuss the agreement unless the trigger condition occurred. She wanted to protect Maya without creating unnecessary conflict.""

I glanced toward the door.

"Daniel, what did she know?""

He exhaled.

"I think you're about to find out.""

The call ended.

I returned downstairs.

Vanessa was standing in the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of water.

She looked at me.

"Finished searching through my things?""

I placed the yellow envelope on the counter.

"Why did my mother write this?""

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she looked away.

"I have no idea.""

"She mentioned a separate agreement with Daniel.""

Vanessa's hand stopped moving.

The glass tilted slightly.

Water spilled over the counter.

I watched her face.

"What's wrong?""

"Nothing.""

"You're shaking.""

"I'm tired.""

I leaned against the counter.

"Did you know my mother had left something specifically to protect Maya from someone who might pretend to love her?""

Vanessa put the glass down.

"Your mother was old. She was suspicious of everyone.""

"Was she suspicious of you?""

Vanessa laughed.

"She never liked me.""

"Why?""

"Because she thought nobody was good enough for her precious son.""

I studied her.

"That's not what I'm asking.""

She grabbed a paper towel.

"Marcus, I don't want to discuss your mother's paranoia.""

"Then let's discuss the money.""

Her shoulders stiffened.

"Again?""

"Yes. Again.""

She threw the paper towel onto the counter.

"I used some of the money. I admitted that.""

"You admitted nothing. I found the transactions.""

"Fine. I transferred money. It was temporary.""

"Where did the $8,450 go?""

She stared at me.

"I paid bills.""

"Which bills?""

"Household bills.""

"Give me the account statements.""

"No.""

"Then tell me where the money went.""

She folded her arms.

"Why should I?""

"Because it belonged to Maya.""

Vanessa leaned toward me.

"You want to know the truth? Your mother left that child a ridiculous amount of money, and everyone acted as if she were some kind of princess. Meanwhile, my sons had to share everything.""

I looked at her.

"Your sons had private bedrooms, new electronics, vacations, and expensive clothes.""

"Because I worked hard to provide those things!""

"With my money?""

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"You used Maya's inheritance to buy things for yourself and your sons.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"I gave those boys a better life.""

"At Maya's expense.""

"She has you!""

The words exploded between us.

I stared at her.

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"She has a father who would sell the entire house for her. She has your sister. She has everyone feeling sorry for her. My boys have to compete with a dead woman's money.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Don't speak about my mother that way.""

"Why? Because she left money behind and made everyone worship Maya?""

"She left money so her granddaughter would have opportunities.""

"Well, she doesn't need twelve thousand dollars sitting in a bank account!""

"That's not your decision.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You think you're a good father because you pay the mortgage and buy expensive gifts? You weren't here, Marcus. I was the one dealing with the daily problems.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did Maya wear the same dirty blouse for months?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Why did she have to wash it three times?""

Silence.

"Why did she think she was too expensive to love?""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Because she's dramatic.""

I shook my head.

"No. Because you taught her that.""

She slapped the counter.

"Enough!""

The sound echoed through the kitchen.

At the top of the stairs, Noah appeared.

He was wearing a sweatshirt and holding a glass of water.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned.

"Go back to bed.""

He looked at me.

Then at the financial folder in my hand.

"Is this about Maya's money?""

Vanessa went still.

"Noah, go upstairs.""

He didn't move.

"Mom, you said it was already handled.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

Noah looked frightened.

Vanessa marched toward the stairs.

"You're tired. Go to your room.""

He stepped backward.

"Tyler said Dad found the messages.""

I looked toward the dining room.

Tyler appeared in the doorway.

Ethan stood behind him.

Apparently, nobody in the house was sleeping.

I turned to Noah.

"What did your mother tell you?""

He looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

"Don't.""

Noah swallowed.

"She said Maya was going to a new school tomorrow. She said after that, the house would finally be peaceful.""

Maya had come downstairs without me noticing.

She stood behind Tyler.

Her face was pale.

"Why do you want me gone so badly?"" she asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said:

"Because this family cannot keep revolving around you.""

Maya lowered her eyes.

I stepped forward.

"That's enough. You're done speaking to her like that.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"You can't just throw me out.""

"I'm not throwing you out tonight. But you will not make another decision about Maya.""

She laughed.

"You can't prove anything.""

I lifted the phone.

"Daniel has the records.""

Her smile disappeared.

I continued.

"And I have photographs of the documents in your office.""

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the hallway.

For the first time, I saw something beyond anger in her face.

Panic.

Her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

I saw the name before she turned it over.

*REBECCA.*

Vanessa rejected the call.

A second later, a message appeared.

She read it.

Then she quickly put the phone in her pocket.

I watched her.

"What does Rebecca want?""

"Nothing.""

"Let me see.""

"No.""

I took out my own phone and called my sister.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Why are you calling Vanessa?""

Rebecca's voice trembled.

"Because she told me you found the letter.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"How do you know about the letter?""

Rebecca began crying.

"Because I helped her look for it.""

The kitchen went silent.

I closed my eyes.

"Rebecca, what?""

"Marcus, please. Let me explain.""

"How long have you been helping her?""

"Since before Christmas.""

I gripped the phone.

"Helping her do what?""

"She told me your mother had hidden another account. She said the money was supposed to be divided between the children eventually.""

"That's a lie.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you help?""

Rebecca sobbed.

"Because she promised me she would pay my debts.""

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

"What debts?""

"Marcus, I was going to tell you.""

"How much?""

She hesitated.

"Almost twenty thousand.""

I stared at the counter.

Vanessa was watching me carefully.

Rebecca continued.

"She said if I helped her get the documents, she would give me enough money to settle everything. She said Maya wouldn't be hurt.""

"How were you supposed to get the documents?""

Rebecca whispered:

"From your mother's old safe.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

"Rebecca," I said, "where is the safe?""

My sister took a shaky breath.

"Your mother kept it in her old house. But that's not the worst part.""

"What?""

"Vanessa already opened it.""

I looked at the yellow envelope.

"How?""

"She had the key.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where did she get the key?""

Rebecca was crying so hard I could barely understand her.

"Your mother gave it to her.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She didn't deny it.

"Why would my mother give you a key to her safe?"" I demanded.

Vanessa looked away.

Rebecca spoke again.

"Marcus, your mother knew about the money problems before she died. She knew someone was trying to access Maya's inheritance.""

I felt my heartbeat pounding.

"Who?""

My sister's next words were barely audible.

"She suspected Vanessa.""

I stared at my wife.

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward me.

"Rebecca, shut up!""

But my sister continued.

"Marcus, there's a document inside that safe. Your mother told me about it before she died.""

"What document?""

"The original trust agreement. The one that explains why Maya's inheritance cannot be transferred, borrowed, or used by anyone else.""

Daniel's earlier warning suddenly made sense.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where is the safe's contents?""

She stared back at me.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Your mother gave me those documents because she knew you wouldn't protect Maya yourself.""

I couldn't move.

Vanessa walked toward the hallway.

"She knew you would eventually choose another wife over your daughter.""

"That's a lie.""

"Is it?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Your mother knew exactly what kind of man you were, Marcus.""

She turned away.

Then her voice dropped.

"And she was right.""

I wanted to answer.

But before I could, Daniel called.

I answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

His voice was urgent.

"Marcus, I found the original agreement.""

"Good. What's in it?""

"Your mother established a protective clause that changes everything about Maya's inheritance.""

"What kind of clause?""

He paused.

"Marcus, Vanessa was never supposed to have access to that money. In fact, if anyone attempted to transfer it for personal use, the agreement automatically triggered a separate investigation.""

I looked at my wife.

"An investigation into what?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Into the person who tried to take control of Maya's inheritance.""

I swallowed.

"And who is that person?""

"That's what we need to establish. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"The agreement names a second beneficiary.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Your mother didn't leave all the money to Maya.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then who else?""

Daniel answered:

"She left a separate protected fund for the person who would eventually become Maya's legal guardian if you were ever declared unable to care for her.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

Daniel continued.

"And Marcus, according to the original document, your mother named Rebecca.""

My blood ran cold.

Rebecca was not just listed as a temporary guardian in Vanessa's application.

My mother had independently chosen her as Maya's backup guardian years earlier.

And if the agreement had been activated, that decision carried legal significance.

I looked at my wife.

She slowly smiled.

Then she said:

"Now you understand why your sister and I had to work together.""

I gripped the phone.

"Daniel, don't hang up.""

"I'm here.""

"Tell me exactly what happens if Rebecca is involved in the financial transfers.""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said:

"Marcus, if the evidence confirms that Rebecca knowingly participated in misappropriating Maya's inheritance, she could lose her eligibility under the guardian provision.""

I looked at Vanessa.

Her smile widened.

Because suddenly, I understood the real game.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted my daughter out of the house.

She had wanted Rebecca to become involved deeply enough that neither of them could walk away clean.

And somewhere inside my mother's original agreement was a provision that could decide who would control Maya's future.

But I still didn't know why Vanessa had been so desperate to get her hands on that document.

Until Daniel added one final sentence.

"Marcus, there's a handwritten note attached to the original agreement. Your mother left specific instructions for me if Vanessa ever attempted to access the trust.""

"What instructions?""

Daniel took a breath.

"She wanted me to tell you who Maya's biological mother really was.""

My hand went numb around the phone.

May you like

Because Maya's mother had died believing she had left our daughter in a safe family.

And suddenly, I was beginning to wonder whether the story of her death had ever been the truth.
