Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph showed Maya standing outside her school at 8:14 that morning.

She was wearing her old blue backpack, holding a folder against her chest, and looking down at her phone.

It had been taken from across the street.

Someone had been watching her.

I enlarged the image with trembling fingers.

There was a reflection in the window of a parked black SUV. A man's face was partially visible behind the glass.

I recognized the vehicle.

It belonged to Richard Cole.

"Daniel.""

My voice barely worked.

He came around the table.

"What happened?""

I showed him the photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

"Don't respond to the message.""

"That's my daughter.""

"I know. We need to establish where she is right now.""

I called Maya.

She answered after two rings.

"Hey, Dad.""

"Sweetheart, where are you?""

"At school. Why?""

"Are you inside?""

"Yes. I'm in the library.""

"Stay there. Don't leave with anyone except me.""

There was a pause.

"What's wrong?""

"Nothing you need to worry about. Just stay with your teacher.""

"Dad, you're scaring me.""

I closed my eyes.

"I'm sorry. I'll explain everything when I get there.""

I ended the call and immediately contacted the school office.

I instructed them to keep Maya inside until I arrived and to notify the police if anyone attempted to collect her.

Daniel was already making another call.

"Marcus, we need to leave.""

Rebecca stood.

"What's happening?""

I showed her the photograph.

She covered her mouth.

"Oh, my God.""

"Did Richard ever have access to Maya's school schedule?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"Not that I know of.""

I looked at her.

"Think carefully.""

She stared at the photograph.

Then her expression changed.

"Vanessa.""

"What about her?""

"She used to ask me for Maya's timetable. She said she wanted to coordinate family activities.""

My jaw tightened.

"Did you give it to her?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked away.

Another person had helped Vanessa keep track of my daughter's movements.

Another person had mistaken manipulation for concern.

Daniel put his phone away.

"The police are sending someone to the school. We should meet them there.""

We drove in separate cars.

I couldn't stop checking my phone.

No new messages came.

That somehow made everything worse.

When I reached the school, two officers were already standing near the main entrance.

A staff member escorted me to the library.

Maya was sitting at a table with her English teacher.

The moment she saw me, she stood.

"Dad!""

I crossed the room and hugged her.

She held me tightly.

"What's happening?""

I looked at her teacher.

"Could we speak privately?""

She nodded and stepped away.

I crouched in front of Maya.

"Has anyone approached you today?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Has anyone called you?""

"Just Tyler.""

"What did he say?""

"He asked if I was okay.""

I studied her face.

"Did anyone ask you to leave school?""

She hesitated.

Then she reached into her backpack.

"Actually, something happened this morning.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in my locker.""

I opened it.

There were only two sentences.

Your father doesn't know the whole story.

Ask him why your mother was driving to see Richard Cole the night she died.

I felt my blood run cold.

Maya watched my face.

"Why was Mom going to see Richard?""

I couldn't answer.

The officer approached.

"Mr. Bennett, we need to take a statement.""

I folded the paper.

"Of course.""

He looked at Maya.

"Has anyone threatened you directly?""

She shook her head.

"Not directly.""

"Have you seen this person before?""

Maya hesitated.

Then she said something that made me look at her.

"I think so.""

I turned.

"What?""

She looked toward the windows.

"There's a man who sometimes comes to the house. He usually waits outside.""

"Who?""

"I don't know his name. Vanessa calls him Mr. Cole.""

Richard.

I felt my stomach twist.

"How many times have you seen him?""

"Three or four.""

"Did he ever speak to you?""

Maya nodded.

"Once.""

"What did he say?""

She looked down.

"He asked if I remembered my mother.""

I swallowed.

"What did you tell him?""

"That I was little when she died.""

Maya's voice became quieter.

"Then he said I looked exactly like her.""

The officer exchanged a glance with his colleague.

I put my hand on Maya's shoulder.

"Did he ever ask you to go somewhere with him?""

"No.""

"Did Vanessa tell you to trust him?""

Maya nodded.

"She said he was family.""

I looked away.

Daniel arrived a few minutes later.

He had spoken to the investigators and arranged for the photograph and the threatening messages to be preserved.

"We need to get Maya somewhere safe," he said.

I nodded.

"She's coming home with me.""

Maya looked between us.

"Can we go to Grandma's house?""

I frowned.

"Why?""

She shrugged.

"I feel safe there.""

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"That might be an option, provided the police are aware of the location.""

We left the school under the officers' supervision.

On the way to my mother's old house, Maya sat in the back seat.

She was unusually quiet.

At a traffic light, she spoke.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Did Mom know Richard was a bad person?""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"I don't know.""

"Then why did Grandma record those things?""

I glanced at her in the mirror.

"Because she wanted us to know the truth.""

Maya looked out the window.

"I wish I remembered her.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Me too.""

When we arrived, Daniel was waiting.

He had arranged for an officer to remain nearby.

Maya went inside to rest.

I stayed on the porch with Daniel.

"What's the next step?"" I asked.

"We need the original accident investigation file, including witness statements and any medical records connected to Laura's appointment.""

"Can you get them?""

"We can request them. The police may need to reopen parts of the investigation if new evidence supports it.""

I nodded.

"Then let's do it.""

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Marcus.""

Richard.

I froze.

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"Stay away from my daughter.""

He chuckled.

"You're making a mistake.""

"You've been watching her.""

"I've been trying to protect her.""

I felt rage rise in my chest.

"From whom?""

"From you.""

I almost laughed.

"You're threatening my child and telling me you're protecting her?""

Richard sighed.

"Listen to me. Vanessa has made some mistakes. I know that. But you don't understand what happened with Laura.""

"Then tell me.""

Silence.

Then he said:

"Your wife was supposed to sign a document that would have protected Maya's future.""

"Which wife?""

Another pause.

"Laura.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What document?""

"The original inheritance agreement.""

"Why did she refuse?""

"Because she believed your mother was manipulating her.""

"Was she?""

Richard didn't answer.

I continued.

"Why were you at the clinic that day?""

His breathing changed.

"Who told you that?""

I stared at the street.

"Answer me.""

"Marcus, you need to stop digging. You're going to destroy people who have nothing to do with this.""

"Then why are you afraid?""

Richard lowered his voice.

"Because Laura didn't die the way you think she did.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What are you saying?""

Before he could answer, another voice came through.

A woman's voice.

Vanessa.

"Richard, hang up.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Daniel had heard everything.

"Did he say anything useful?""

I looked at him.

"He said Laura didn't die the way I think she did.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Then we need the accident file immediately.""

I turned toward the house.

Maya was standing behind the glass door.

She was holding the photograph of her mother.

And she was crying.

I went inside.

"Sweetheart?""

She looked at me.

"I remember something.""

I crouched in front of her.

"What?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"That night Mom died.""

I stopped breathing.

Maya continued.

"I was in the back seat.""

The room went silent.

I stared at my daughter.

"What?""

She nodded.

"I was little, but I remember the rain. I remember Mom crying.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I thought it was a dream.""

She looked at the photograph.

"But now I remember another person.""

"Who?""

Maya swallowed.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa.""
