Chapter 3: The Woman Who Came While I Was Away
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
A woman had been coming into my house to discuss sending my daughter away?
Without my knowledge?
I looked at Tyler.
"Who was she?""
"I don't know her name.""
"What did she look like?""
"Blonde hair. Maybe forty. She carried a brown leather folder.""
"How many times did she come?""
Tyler rubbed his neck.
"Three times that I saw.""
Maya was standing behind me.
Her face had gone completely white.
"Tyler," she whispered, "was she the woman from the office?""
He looked at her.
"What office?""
Maya began crying again.
I turned toward her.
"Sweetheart, what office?""
She stared at her hands.
"Vanessa took me somewhere last month.""
My chest tightened.
"Where?""
"She said we were going to look at a new school.""
I crouched in front of her.
"Did you go inside?""
Maya nodded.
"It was a building with a receptionist. There were pictures of children on the walls.""
"What happened there?""
"She told me to fill out some papers.""
"What papers?""
Maya shook her head.
"I don't know. They asked me questions about whether I felt safe at home. They asked if you were ever angry with me.""
My stomach dropped.
"Did you tell them the truth?""
"I told them you were a good dad.""
She wiped her nose.
"But Vanessa got angry afterward. She said I wasn't supposed to say that.""
I felt something cold spread through my chest.
"Did she explain why?""
Maya shook her head.
"She said I had ruined everything.""
I stood slowly.
Tyler was staring at the floor.
"Do you know where she took Maya?""
He nodded.
"I heard Mom talking about it.""
"Where?""
"Some kind of private boarding school.""
I looked at him.
"Did she say the name?""
"Ridgewood Academy.""
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way Tyler said it suggested he'd heard far more than he wanted to admit.
"Why would Vanessa send Maya to a boarding school?""
Tyler swallowed.
"She said Maya was making things difficult for her.""
I turned toward my daughter.
Maya was crying silently now.
"She told me you wanted me to go," she whispered.
I felt as if someone had punched me.
"What?""
"She said you were tired of having to choose between me and your new family.""
I took her hands.
"Listen to me. I never said that.""
"She said you were the one who signed the papers.""
My mind raced.
Had Vanessa forged something?
Had she used the account documents?
Before I could ask another question, the doorbell rang.
Daniel had arrived.
I opened the front door.
He stepped inside carrying a leather briefcase and a thick folder.
"Marcus," he said, "we need to talk.""
I led him into the dining room.
He glanced at the stained blouse, the receipts, and the pale faces around the table.
Then he looked at Maya.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
She gave him a weak nod.
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"Marcus, I reviewed the initial account information while driving over. The account is more complicated than you think.""
I sat opposite him.
"Tell me.""
He opened his briefcase.
"Your mother established a protected fund for Maya. You were appointed trustee. Vanessa was listed as an emergency administrative contact, but she was never authorized to withdraw money for personal use.""
"Then how did she do it?""
"That's what we're investigating.""
He removed several printed pages.
"However, I found something unusual. About eleven months ago, a request was submitted to change the account's withdrawal permissions.""
"Who submitted it?""
Daniel looked at the paperwork.
"Vanessa.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Did I approve it?""
"There's a signature on the authorization.""
"Mine?""
Daniel turned the paper around.
I looked at it.
It resembled my signature.
But something was wrong.
The capital M was too narrow. The final stroke was longer than the one I normally used.
"That's not my signature.""
Daniel nodded.
"I suspected that.""
Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.
She was holding a suitcase.
"What's going on?""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Mrs. Bennett, I'd like you to sit down.""
She looked at him.
"I have nothing to discuss with you.""
"Then perhaps you'll want to hear about the account authorization bearing your husband's signature.""
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I stood.
"Did you forge my signature?""
Vanessa placed the suitcase on the floor.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Did you?""
"I was trying to make things easier.""
"By taking money from Maya?""
"By managing a situation you refused to manage!""
Daniel looked between us.
"Mrs. Bennett, the account records show repeated transfers to an external account. The final transaction occurred this morning.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Then Marcus should check his own finances before accusing me.""
Daniel opened another page.
"That's exactly what we're doing.""
He looked at me.
"There's something else. The withdrawals weren't all made for shopping.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
He pointed toward the transaction list.
"Some of the money was transferred to an organization called Northbridge Family Services.""
Maya made a small noise.
I turned.
"Do you recognize that name?""
She nodded slowly.
"That's where Vanessa took me.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes. It was on the building.""
Daniel wrote something down.
Then he examined another document.
"Marcus, I need to ask you a question. Did you ever authorize anyone to make a residential placement application for Maya?""
"No.""
"Did you sign any guardianship documents?""
"No.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was a strange, brittle sound.
"You're all making this much more complicated than it needs to be.""
I turned toward her.
"What did you do?""
She lifted her chin.
"I was trying to protect this family.""
"From what?""
"From the constant problems Maya creates.""
My hands curled into fists.
Daniel raised one hand slightly.
"Let's keep this factual.""
He pointed to a line on the document.
"Northbridge received a substantial payment from Maya's account. The description attached to the payment is particularly concerning.""
"What does it say?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Residential assessment and placement deposit.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You're paying to have my daughter sent away?""
She shook her head.
"That's not what it means.""
"Then explain it.""
"She needed help.""
Maya stepped forward.
"I don't need help!""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
Maya flinched.
I moved between them.
"Don't speak to her.""
Vanessa stared at me.
"Marcus, she has been difficult since the day I moved into this house. Everything has to revolve around her. Your mother spoiled her, you spoil her, and now you expect me to raise three boys while treating her like a princess.""
I stared at my wife.
There it was.
Not an excuse.
Not a misunderstanding.
Resentment.
Pure, deliberate resentment toward a child who had done nothing except exist in a family she had once believed was safe.
Daniel gathered the documents.
"Marcus, I recommend that you immediately secure Maya's remaining financial records, contact the organization, and obtain copies of every document associated with this placement.""
"Can you find out whether anything has been legally approved?""
"I'll start today.""
Vanessa grabbed her suitcase again.
"I'm leaving.""
I didn't stop her.
But before she reached the front door, Daniel spoke.
"Mrs. Bennett?""
She turned.
"The organization has already confirmed something important.""
Her face tightened.
"What?""
Daniel glanced at the document in his hand.
"They have a scheduled meeting concerning Maya tomorrow morning.""
My heart dropped.
"What meeting?""
Daniel looked at me.
"According to their records, Maya's residential placement is scheduled for final approval.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"You arranged this without my permission?""
She said nothing.
Then Maya whispered:
"Dad, she told me tomorrow was the day I had to leave.""
I felt her small hand grip mine.
I looked at Daniel.
"Cancel it.""
He shook his head.
"There's a problem.""
"What problem?""
He turned the final page toward me.
At the bottom was a signature authorizing the application.
My name.
My signature.
And beneath it, a date from three months earlier.
Daniel studied my face.
"Marcus, if you didn't sign this, someone has been using your identity to make legal representations about your daughter.""
I stared at the document.
Then I noticed something else.
A second signature appeared beneath mine.
It belonged to the person listed as Maya's proposed temporary guardian.
I read the name once.
Then again.
Because it wasn't Vanessa.
May you like
It was someone I had trusted for almost twenty years.
*My younger sister, Rebecca.*
