Amused

Chapter 4: My Sister's Signature

For almost twenty years, my younger sister had been the person I trusted most in the world.

Rebecca had stood beside me when our mother died. She had helped me raise Maya after her biological mother passed away. She had attended every birthday, every school performance, and every parent-teacher conference she could manage.

When I remarried Vanessa, Rebecca had even been the one who encouraged me.

"Marcus, you deserve to be happy again," she'd told me.

Now her name was printed beneath a document designed to send my daughter away.

I stared at the paper.

"Daniel, are you absolutely sure this is the application they received?""

He adjusted his glasses.

"This is the copy Northbridge provided. I haven't verified the signatures independently, but both names appear on the submitted documents.""

I shook my head.

"Rebecca wouldn't do this.""

Vanessa gave a quiet laugh.

It was the first time she'd looked genuinely comfortable since Daniel arrived.

"Maybe your sister understands what you've refused to see.""

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

"Nothing.""

"You're not leaving until you explain why my sister's name is on this document.""

She sighed dramatically.

"Ask Rebecca.""

"That's exactly what I'm going to do.""

I pulled out my phone and called her.

It rang twice.

"Marcus!"" Rebecca answered cheerfully.

"I was just thinking about you.""

"Where are you?""

"At home. Why?""

"I need you to come here.""

Her voice changed.

"Is something wrong?""

I looked at the document.

"Yes. Something is very wrong.""

There was a pause.

"Is Maya okay?""

That question nearly made me drop the phone.

"You tell me.""

"What?""

"Your name is on a residential placement application for my daughter.""

Silence.

Then Rebecca whispered, "Oh, God.""

I closed my eyes.

"Rebecca, what did you do?""

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"Not over the phone.""

"Come here.""

"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""

She disconnected.

I lowered the phone.

Vanessa was standing near the staircase, watching me.

"Your sister is going to tell you what you need to hear," she said.

I stared at her.

"You seem very confident.""

"Because I'm the only person who has been honest about how difficult things have become.""

Maya was sitting beside Daniel now.

Her hands were wrapped around a glass of water, but she hadn't taken a sip.

I walked over and knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, I need you to tell me something.""

She looked up.

"Did Aunt Rebecca ever talk to you about leaving?""

Maya nodded.

"When?""

"After Christmas.""

"What did she say?""

Maya swallowed.

"She said sometimes children need a fresh start when families become complicated.""

My chest tightened.

"Did she say you should go somewhere?""

"She said a school might help me become more independent.""

I glanced at Daniel.

He was writing everything down.

"Did you want to go?""

Maya shook her head.

"I told her I wanted to stay with you.""

"And what did she say?""

Maya looked toward Vanessa.

"She said you were tired.""

I felt my throat close.

"Tired of what?""

"Tired of having to take care of me.""

I pulled my daughter into my arms.

"That's not true.""

She pressed her face against my shoulder.

"I know now.""

I held her until her breathing settled.

Then the doorbell rang.

Rebecca had arrived.

She walked into the dining room wearing a beige coat, carrying a large leather handbag. Her eyes immediately went to Maya.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

She moved forward.

Maya stood up but didn't approach her.

Rebecca stopped.

"What's going on?""

I placed the placement application on the table.

"Tell me.""

She looked down.

Her face went pale.

"Marcus...""

"Did you sign this?""

She didn't answer.

"Rebecca.""

She slowly pulled out a chair.

"Yes.""

The word landed like a stone.

I gripped the back of another chair.

"Why?""

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

"Marcus, please.""

"No. My daughter was involved in this. I want her to hear the truth.""

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

Then she took a deep breath.

"Vanessa called me several months ago. She said Maya was struggling emotionally and that you were too overwhelmed with work to notice.""

I stared at her.

"That's a lie.""

"I know that now.""

"Then why did you sign?""

Rebecca's eyes filled.

"Because she told me Maya was becoming increasingly aggressive at home. She said the boys were afraid of her.""

I turned toward Tyler.

He shook his head immediately.

"That's not true.""

Rebecca looked at him.

"I didn't know.""

I returned my attention to my sister.

"Did you speak to Maya before signing?""

"Yes.""

"And she told you she wanted to leave?""

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"So you signed a document to remove my daughter from her home without asking her father or listening to the child herself?""

"I thought I was helping.""

"How?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Vanessa said Northbridge was an assessment center. She told me Maya would receive counseling and academic support. She said it was temporary.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett, did you read the entire application?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"Not every page.""

"Did you understand that you were listed as the proposed temporary guardian?""

She looked up sharply.

"What?""

Daniel turned the document around.

"Your signature is here. The application identifies you as the person responsible for Maya during the placement period.""

Rebecca stared at it.

"I never agreed to take custody of Maya.""

I looked at her.

"Then what did you think you were signing?""

"A recommendation.""

Daniel exchanged a glance with me.

"That distinction is important.""

Rebecca pressed her fingers against her forehead.

"Vanessa told me it was just paperwork so Maya could be evaluated.""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"That's exactly what it was.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then why does the document include a proposed residential placement?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Because that's how these organizations work.""

"Did you explain that to Rebecca?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Rebecca slowly turned toward her.

"You told me Maya would come home after the assessment.""

Vanessa looked irritated.

"She would have, eventually.""

"Eventually?""

"Rebecca, don't start.""

My sister stood.

"You said it was a temporary program.""

"It is.""

"You told me Marcus knew.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Well, he knows now.""

Rebecca looked as though she'd been slapped.

I stepped between them.

"Enough. I want the complete truth.""

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

"You're acting as if I planned some terrible conspiracy. Maya needs structure. She's been spoiled her entire life, and nobody wants to admit it.""

I pointed toward the stained blouse.

"Is that what you call structure?""

She rolled her eyes.

"I am not having this conversation again.""

Daniel stood.

"Mrs. Bennett, I strongly advise you not to remove or destroy any records relating to this application.""

She glared at him.

"Are you threatening me?""

"No. I'm preserving evidence.""

For the first time, Vanessa seemed unable to find an immediate response.

Rebecca turned toward me.

"Marcus, I swear I didn't know she was planning to send Maya away permanently.""

I looked at my sister.

"Did you know about the money?""

Her eyes shifted.

That tiny movement was enough.

"Rebecca?""

She sat down again.

"I knew there was money involved.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa told me the account was being used to cover some family expenses.""

"And you believed her?""

"She said you had approved it.""

I looked at Daniel.

He opened his briefcase and pulled out a printed transaction record.

"There's another matter," he said.

He placed it on the table.

A transfer had been made to an account belonging to Rebecca.

Amount: $3,500.

Date: six months earlier.

I stared at my sister.

"What's this?""

Rebecca looked at the paper.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Marcus...""

"Did Vanessa give you money from Maya's account?""

Rebecca started crying.

"I thought it was hers.""

"How could you think that?""

"She told me you had given her access to your household funds.""

"Three thousand five hundred dollars?""

"I needed help.""

"For what?""

Rebecca looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa stared back.

Then Rebecca whispered:

"She said it was a loan. She told me not to mention it because you were already under financial pressure.""

I felt something inside me collapse.

My sister had accepted money taken from my daughter.

My wife had arranged it.

And both had kept me in the dark.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the garden looked exactly as it had every other Sunday. The sprinklers were running. The roses were blooming. A delivery truck passed the gate.

Nothing outside had changed.

Everything inside had.

Daniel gathered the papers.

"Marcus, I recommend we contact Northbridge immediately and request a hold on tomorrow's meeting.""

"Do it.""

He stepped into the hallway to make the call.

Rebecca approached me.

"Marcus, please. Don't shut me out.""

I turned.

"You helped someone make my daughter believe she wasn't wanted.""

"I didn't know.""

"You didn't ask.""

She started crying harder.

I looked toward Maya.

She was watching us.

"Do you know what she told me this morning?"" I asked.

Rebecca shook her head.

"She said she thought she was too expensive to love.""

My sister covered her face.

I didn't comfort her.

Not this time.

Then Daniel returned.

His expression was different.

"Marcus, I just spoke with Northbridge.""

"What happened?""

"They've agreed to suspend the placement meeting temporarily.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"But there's a problem.""

"What now?""

Daniel looked at the document again.

"They have another authorization on file. One that allows Vanessa to collect Maya tomorrow morning.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

"There's a signed parental consent form attached.""

I took the paper.

At the bottom was my name.

And beside it was a photocopy of my driver's license.

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

"Where did you get that?"" I asked.

She didn't answer.

Daniel pointed to the date.

"Marcus, this form was submitted three weeks ago.""

I read the final line.

*AUTHORIZED PICKUP: VANESSA BENNETT.*

Then I looked at the next section.

*ALTERNATE CONTACT: REBECCA BENNETT.*
