Chapter 9: The Last Piece Of The Puzzle
I couldn’t move.
The street was silent.
The night air felt heavy.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Ethan knows something.””
“About Claire’s death?””
“Yes.””
My heart started racing.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to come here after everything and use Claire’s death as another game.””
“It’s not a game.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me before?””
She had no answer.
And that told me enough.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You always tell half-truths.””
Her face tightened.
“Because I was scared.””
I laughed.
“Scared?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing.””
I stared at her.
“Losing what?””
“You.””
The answer surprised me.
But not enough.
“You tried to remove my daughter.””
“I know.””
“You tried to control my life.””
“I know.””
“Then why should I believe anything you say?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Because Ethan is the reason I came near you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“He knew something about Claire.””
“What?””
“I don’t know everything.””
I watched her carefully.
“But he told me Claire had discovered something before she died.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She found financial records connected to my family.””
I thought about the documents.
The hidden agreements.
The manipulation.
“What kind of records?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
She looked defeated.
“But I know where to find them.””
I didn’t trust her.
I couldn’t.
But I needed answers.
The next day, I met Ethan.
He looked nothing like the confident man from the engagement party.
He looked nervous.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.
“Why?””
“Because some truths don’t fix anything.””
“I don’t need fixing.””
I put the folder on the table.
“I need the truth.””
He stared at me.
Then sighed.
“Claire found out Vanessa had been manipulating people for years.””
I stayed silent.
“She was collecting information. Personal information.””
“Why?””
“To find opportunities.””
My hands tightened.
“She used relationships like business deals.””
“Yes.””
“And Claire found out.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because Vanessa threatened her.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She told Claire if she exposed her, she would make sure Daniel lost everything.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Vanessa knew exactly where to attack.””
My daughter.
Always my daughter.
“She wanted Claire afraid.””
“Did she hurt Claire?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“But she stressed her.””
I closed my eyes.
Claire was already sick.
Already fighting.
And Vanessa added fear to her final days.
Ethan pushed a box across the table.
“What is this?””
“Everything Claire left with me.””
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
Documents.
A small voice recorder.
I pressed play.
Claire’s voice filled the room.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
I stopped breathing.
Her voice.
After years.
Her real voice.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
A pause.
“But I was afraid.””
I covered my mouth.
Claire continued.
“Vanessa is dangerous because she doesn’t look dangerous.””
My eyes closed.
“She makes people feel guilty for protecting themselves.””
The recording ended.
I sat there.
Unable to speak.
Then Ethan said:
“There’s more.””
“What?””
He handed me another document.
A legal agreement.
Signed by Vanessa.
But this time, it wasn’t about me.
It was about Nia.
I read the title.
“Child Custody Arrangement Proposal.””
My blood went cold.
“She planned this before your wedding.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Why?””
He answered quietly.
“Because Vanessa never wanted to marry you.””
My hands shook.
“Then what did she want?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
“She wanted to become the only person Nia had left.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
She didn’t want to replace Claire.
She wanted to erase her.
And the final piece of evidence was sitting in front of me.
A document with one more signature.
Someone else had approved the plan.
Someone close to me.
Someone I trusted.
I turned the page.
And saw the name.
May you like
My heart stopped.
Because it belonged to someone I never suspected.
