Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Invitation

The ceremony never started.

Not that day.

Not after what I had seen.

I took Nia away from the crowd and brought her inside the private preparation room.

She sat on the sofa, still holding her purse tightly.

Like if she let go, everything would disappear.

I knelt in front of her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded quickly.

But twelve years of being her father taught me one thing.

Nia always said she was okay when she wasn’t.

“Look at me,” I said gently.

She looked up.

“Did Vanessa say anything else?””

Her lips trembled.

“She said I would ruin your wedding.””

My chest tightened.

“She said that?””

Nia nodded.

“She said you wanted a new life.””

I closed my eyes.

A thousand memories rushed through my head.

Me teaching Nia how to ride a bike.

Her falling asleep on my shoulder during movies.

The night she asked if I would ever leave her too.

I promised her I never would.

And now Vanessa had used that exact fear against her.

A knock came at the door.

My best friend Marcus stepped inside.

“Daniel.””

His face was serious.

“I need to talk to you.””

I stood.

“What?””

He glanced at Nia.

“She told some of the staff not to let Nia enter.””

My jaw tightened.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

“She arranged this?””

Marcus nodded.

“She specifically told them Nia was not part of the wedding party.””

Nia looked down.

“I’m sorry, Dad.””

That sentence broke me.

I immediately sat beside her.

“No.””

She looked confused.

“No?””

“You never apologize for someone hurting you.””

“But maybe Vanessa was right.””

My heart sank.

“Why would you say that?””

She shrugged.

“Because everyone here is dressed fancy.””

“Nia.””

“And I’m just me.””

I held her hand.

“Exactly. And that is the person I wanted here.””

She looked at me.

“You did?””

“Of course.””

“Then why did she say you didn’t want me?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Not one that would make sense to a child.

Because the truth was too ugly.

Before Vanessa entered my life, Nia and I were a team.

After her mother died, it was just us.

Then I met Vanessa.

At first, she seemed perfect.

She remembered Nia’s favorite snacks.

She helped with homework.

She told me she wanted to be the mother figure Nia never had.

I believed her.

Maybe I wanted to believe her.

Because I was tired.

Tired of being alone.

Tired of watching my daughter grow up without a mother.

But looking back now, I realized something.

The signs had always been there.

Small things.

Little comments.

Things I ignored because they were easier to explain away.

“Daniel,” Marcus said quietly.

I turned.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then handed me his phone.

“I found this while checking the guest list.””

I looked at the screen.

It was a message from Vanessa to the wedding coordinator.

My eyes moved across the words.

“Remove any mention of Nia from the ceremony.””

My stomach twisted.

Below it was another message.

“Daniel needs to understand this is our new beginning.””

Our new beginning.

Without my daughter.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She had changed.

Her confident wedding smile was gone.

Now she looked like someone who had been caught.

“Daniel, please.””

Nia immediately became quiet.

I noticed.

She was scared of Vanessa now.

That hurt more than anything.

“Leave,” I said.

Vanessa stopped.

“What?””

“I said leave.””

“I just want to explain.””

“No. You wanted to explain after I caught you.””

Her face tightened.

“I was trying to protect our wedding.””

“Our wedding?””

I pointed toward Nia.

“That is my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She looked away.

And that small movement told me everything.

“You never accepted her.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you tell her she didn’t belong?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she whispered:

“Because things would have been easier without her.””

Silence.

Complete silence.

Even Vanessa seemed shocked that she had said it aloud.

I looked at the woman I was supposed to marry.

The woman I trusted.

And I realized I had no idea who she really was.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rebecca. I think you need to know what Vanessa has been hiding before you marry her.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

Because she knew exactly who Rebecca was.

And whatever this woman had to say…

Vanessa was terrified I would hear it.
