Chapter 8: Claire’s Final Message
I couldn’t open the file for several minutes.
My finger hovered over the screen.
Because part of me was afraid.
Afraid of what Claire had known.
Afraid of what I had missed.
Afraid that the woman I loved had spent her final days trying to warn me, and I wasn’t there to hear her.
Finally, I opened it.
The message was short.
But every word felt heavier than anything I had ever read.
Daniel,
If you are seeing this, something happened that prevented me from telling you myself.
Please don’t blame yourself.
You always want to save everyone.
That is the man I love.
But promise me one thing.
Protect Nia.
My eyes blurred.
I had to stop reading.
Then I continued.
Vanessa approached me through the charity.
At first, I thought she was kind.
But she asks questions that make me uncomfortable.
Questions about money.
Questions about insurance.
Questions about what happens if I’m gone.
I believe she is trying to enter our lives for a reason.
I don’t know what that reason is.
But my instincts tell me to trust them.
Then the final line appeared.
Daniel,
If Vanessa ever becomes close to you…
Do not let her convince you that loving Nia less is the price of moving forward.
I closed my eyes.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa tried to do.
Not immediately.
Not openly.
Slowly.
A small comment here.
A complaint there.
Until one day I almost stood at an altar with someone who wanted my daughter removed from my life.
I printed the message.
Then I went to find Nia.
She was sitting in the living room.
“Dad?””
I sat beside her.
“I found something from Mom.””
Her eyes widened.
“Really?””
I handed her a small envelope.
Inside was a letter Claire had written specifically for Nia.
I had never seen it.
My hands shook as my daughter opened it.
She read silently.
Then tears fell.
“She said she loved me.””
I smiled sadly.
“She did.””
“She said she was proud of me.””
“She was.””
Nia pressed the letter to her chest.
For the first time in weeks, she looked peaceful.
But my peace didn’t last.
Because later that evening, Vanessa appeared outside my house.
I saw her through the window.
Standing there.
Alone.
I stepped outside.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
She looked different.
Not like the woman at the wedding.
Not like the woman who controlled every room she entered.
She looked desperate.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
“I need you to hear me.””
“I heard enough.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the house.
Toward where Nia was.
And her expression changed.
“You really care about her.””
The words sounded almost like surprise.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then she said:
“I didn’t hate Nia.””
I waited.
“I hated what she represented.””
“What?””
“You had a life before me.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You mean Claire.””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“You were jealous of my dead wife?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was jealous that she would always be first.””
I stepped back.
Because finally, Vanessa admitted the truth.
It was never about Nia.
It was about Claire.
About a woman who was gone but still loved.
A woman Vanessa could never replace.
“You should leave.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“There’s one thing you still don’t know.””
I said nothing.
She took a deep breath.
“Claire didn’t just know me.””
My stomach tightened.
“She knew my family.””
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“My brother Ethan wasn’t helping me steal your money.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Because Ethan knew the truth about Claire’s death.””
