Chapter 7: The Woman Behind The Mask
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The lawyer looked nervous.
I looked confused.
Because none of it made sense.
“Claire was dying,” I said.
“Yes.””
“She trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would you listen to Vanessa?””
The lawyer sighed.
“Because Vanessa came to me with documents.””
“What documents?””
He opened a folder.
Inside were copies of emails, medical records, and handwritten notes.
My hands trembled as I looked through them.
“She told me Claire wanted privacy.””
“That’s a lie.””
“I know that now.””
I stared at him.
“What did Vanessa tell you?””
“That Claire was afraid her illness would cause conflict. She said Claire didn’t want you distracted from raising Nia.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So she pretended to protect Claire.””
“Yes.””
“But she was protecting herself.””
The lawyer nodded.
“She had already started positioning herself as someone important in your life.””
My jaw tightened.
“When did she start?””
The lawyer looked away.
“Before Claire passed away.””
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because they confirmed my worst fear.
Vanessa didn’t enter my life after tragedy.
She entered during it.
She waited.
She watched.
And when I was vulnerable, she stepped in.
I left the office carrying copies of everything.
On the drive home, I called Rebecca.
“We need to meet.””
“What happened?””
“She knew Claire.””
A pause.
“What?””
“She knew her before she knew me.””
Rebecca was silent.
Then she said:
“Daniel, there’s something I didn’t tell you.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“What?””
“I found another person connected to Vanessa.””
“Who?””
“Her ex-fiancé.””
I stopped at a red light.
“Does he know about Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Then I want to meet him.””
Two hours later, I sat across from a man named Michael.
He looked exhausted.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret.
“I wondered when Vanessa’s next victim would find me,” he said.
My expression hardened.
“Victim?””
He nodded.
“She doesn’t choose people because she loves them.””
“Why does she choose them?””
“Because they have something she wants.””
I leaned forward.
“What did she want from you?””
“My money.””
“And from me?””
He looked at me.
“Your stability.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She studies people.””
The room became quiet.
“She finds their weaknesses.””
“My weakness is Nia.””
Michael nodded.
“She knew.””
The answer made my blood boil.
“She knew my daughter was everything to me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why would she try to hurt her?””
“Because people like Vanessa don’t attack what they hate.””
He looked at me seriously.
“They attack what they can’t control.””
That sentence stayed with me.
When I returned home, Nia was sitting on the porch.
Waiting.
“You look sad,” she said.
I forced a smile.
“I’m okay.””
She shook her head.
“You always say that when you’re not.””
I sat beside her.
“You’re becoming too much like your mother.””
She smiled slightly.
“Mom was smart.””
“The smartest person I ever knew.””
Nia looked at the ground.
“Did Vanessa know Mom?””
I froze.
Children notice everything.
“What makes you ask that?””
“Because yesterday you looked scared when you saw the picture.””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Then I said:
“Yes.””
Nia hugged her knees.
“Was she pretending?””
The question was simple.
But it carried so much pain.
“I think she was.””
Nia nodded slowly.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I knew.””
I turned.
“What?””
“I knew she didn’t like me.””
My heart sank.
“Nia…”
“I just thought if I tried harder, she would.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Because while I was busy believing Vanessa’s excuses, my daughter had been silently trying to earn love.
A love she should never have had to earn.
That night, I made a decision.
I would stop looking for answers just to understand Vanessa.
I would find answers to protect Nia.
The next morning, Rebecca sent me a file.
The subject line said:
“Vanessa’s first contact with Claire.””
I opened it.
Inside was a message.
Not from Vanessa.
From Claire.
Sent one week before her death.

And the final sentence read:
“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I was right about Vanessa.””
