Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Vanessa

I walked outside before answering.

The wedding decorations moved gently in the wind.

Everything looked beautiful.

That was the cruelest part.

A perfect setting for a day that had already fallen apart.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The woman on the phone took a breath.

“I used to work with Vanessa.””

“Why are you calling me?””

“Because I saw what happened today.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You were here?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop her?””

There was a pause.

“Because I needed you to see it yourself.””

The answer made my blood run cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Vanessa is very good at hiding who she is.””

I looked through the glass doors.

Vanessa stood inside.

Watching me.

Waiting.

“What are you talking about?””

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Before you met her, she was engaged.””

I frowned.

“That’s not a secret.””

“No. But the reason it ended is.””

I said nothing.

“She left her fiancé after his daughter refused to move out.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“His daughter was fourteen. Vanessa told him she couldn’t build a future while sharing a home with a child who wasn’t hers.””

I stared through the window.

At Vanessa.

At the woman who had just done the same thing to Nia.

“No.””

“I know what you’re thinking,” Rebecca said.

“You think maybe this is different.””

I swallowed.

“Is it?””

“No.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I made the same mistake.””

Her voice cracked.

“I ignored the warning signs.””

I looked down.

“What happened?””

“She convinced me she was the victim. She always does that.””

My mind replayed every argument Vanessa and I had ever had.

Every time Nia was involved.

Every time Vanessa somehow became the person who was hurt.

“Where did you get my number?””

“She kept your wedding invitation on her desk. Your name was there.””

I closed my eyes.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?””

“You don’t.””

That answer surprised me.

“But you can check.””

She gave me information.

A name.

An address.

A date.

Proof.

When the call ended, I stood there for several minutes.

Then I went back inside.

Vanessa immediately approached.

“Who was that?””

I looked at her.

“Why does it matter?””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My voice was colder than I expected.

“You don’t get to control this conversation.””

She stepped back.

“I was stressed.””

“You were cruel.””

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

Nia was still sitting nearby.

Quiet.

Watching.

I lowered my voice.

“I need you to leave.””

Vanessa stared.

“You’re ending this?””

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the woman who tried to remove her from my life.

“Yes.””

Her face twisted.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

The question was so unbelievable that I almost laughed.

“She is my daughter.””

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“And I was going to be your wife.””

“But you wanted a marriage without my child.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I stepped closer.

“You told a twelve-year-old girl her father didn’t want her.””

Her expression flickered.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You’ll regret this.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I looked at Nia.

“She’s the one thing I’ll never regret.””

Vanessa left without another word.

But as I watched her walk away, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Rebecca.

It contained one photo.

And one sentence.

“Daniel, this is what Vanessa planned to do after the wedding.””

I opened the image.

And my entire body went numb.

Because it wasn’t just about excluding Nia.

May you like

It was about taking something from me.

Something I never thought anyone would try to steal.
