Chapter 8: The Truth Before Us
The word “accident” changed everything.
Not because I knew what it meant.
Because Daniel did.
The second I said it, his face changed.
“You know about that?””
I stared at him.
“What accident?””
He went completely silent.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
“Daniel.””
He sat down.
“I was hoping you’d never have to know.””
My stomach twisted.
“Know what?””
He looked at the floor.
“The accident happened before we met.””
“That’s all you’re going to say?””
“No.””
He took a deep breath.
“I was driving.””
I waited.
“Claire was in the car.””
The room felt frozen.
“What happened?””
“She was hurt.””
“How badly?””
“Bad enough that she spent weeks in the hospital.””
I covered my mouth.
“And you never told me?””
“I didn’t think—”
“You never thought?””
My voice broke.
“You married me and never told me there was someone whose life changed because of you?””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“It wasn’t my fault.””
“I didn’t say it was.””
“Then why are you angry?””
“Because I don’t know you anymore.””
That sentence hurt both of us.
But it was true.
The problem wasn’t only the secret.
It was the years of believing I knew everything.
I called Claire.
I didn’t know why.
Maybe because I needed to hear the truth from someone who wasn’t afraid of losing me.
She answered.
“Emma.””
Her voice was calm.
“You know who I am.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“I’m surprised Daniel told you.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me what happened.””
Claire sighed.
“I don’t want revenge.””
“Then why contact me?””
“Because Megan was going to destroy you using a story she didn’t understand.””
I frowned.
“What story?””
“The accident.””
I waited.
Claire continued.
“Daniel saved my life.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He pulled me out of the car before it caught fire.””
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
“Then why hide it?””
“Because he blamed himself.””
Claire’s voice softened.
“He thought his life had to be punishment.””
I sat down.
Everything shifted.
The secret wasn’t what I thought.
“Why did Megan know?””
Claire answered immediately.
“Because she found old records.””
“And?””
“She twisted them.””
“How?””
“She told people Daniel ruined my life.””
I felt sick.
“Megan knew the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then why use it against him?””
Claire laughed sadly.
“Because Megan doesn’t care about truth.””
I closed my eyes.
She didn’t.
Not once.
She cared about winning.
After the call ended, I looked at Daniel.
“You saved her.””
He nodded.
“I couldn’t save myself from feeling guilty.””
I sat beside him.
For the first time in days, I saw the person I married.
Not the perfect man.
Not the man without mistakes.
Just Daniel.
A human being carrying pain he never shared.
“I’m still hurt,” I whispered.
“I know.””
“But this is different.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
That night, we talked for hours.
About secrets.
About fear.
About how silence can damage love even when the intention is protection.
The next morning, I received a message.
From Megan.
*You finally know about Claire.*
I stared.
Then another.
*Now you understand why Daniel chose you.*
My blood ran cold.
Another message.
*You weren’t special. You were just convenient.*
I looked at Daniel.
He saw my face.
“What did she say?””
I handed him the phone.
His expression hardened.
For the first time, he looked angry.
Not guilty.
Angry.
“She’s trying to hurt you.””
I nodded.
“But why?””
Then Ryan called.
I answered.
His voice was shaking.
“Emma.””
“What happened?””
“I found out why Megan picked the birthday dinner.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“She wanted everyone there because she planned to reveal something.””
“What?””
Ryan whispered:
“She had evidence.””
My heart stopped.
“Evidence of what?””
“She said it would make everyone turn against you.””
I felt the room spinning.
“What evidence?””
May you like
Ryan took a breath.
“Something about your past.””
