Amused

Chapter 2: The Whisper Behind the Smile

I used to think the worst betrayal was something obvious.

A secret message.

A hidden relationship.

A lie caught in the middle of the night.

I was wrong.

Sometimes the worst betrayal is watching someone you love slowly reveal that the person you trusted never existed.

Chloe stood outside the restaurant with her arms wrapped around herself.

The cold wind moved through the parking lot, but I barely felt it.

“What did she say?”” I asked.

Chloe looked nervous.

Like repeating the words would somehow make them real.

“Are you sure you want to know?””

I stared at her.

“Chloe.””

She nodded.

“I heard Megan lean toward Daniel before she sat down.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe looked at him.

“She whispered, ‘Your wife is going to lose her mind when she sees this.’”

My chest tightened.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes,” Chloe said quietly.

“That’s what she said.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Did she?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“I thought she was joking.””

I felt something inside me crack.

“Everyone keeps saying that word.””

I pointed toward the restaurant.

“Joking.””

My voice trembled.

“But jokes don’t require someone to be humiliated.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emma, I swear nothing happened between us.””

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to grab onto that sentence and let it save me.

But trust is like glass.

Once it breaks, even a perfect repair leaves cracks.

Chloe lowered her voice.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Megan has been talking about you.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She complains about your marriage.””

My heart sank.

“How long?””

Chloe looked uncomfortable.

“A while.””

I laughed softly.

“Of course.””

The worst part wasn’t that Megan was cruel.

It was that I had defended her.

For years.

Whenever people said she was too competitive, I told them they misunderstood her.

Whenever someone said she liked attention, I told them she was just confident.

I had spent twelve years explaining away the warning signs.

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.

Daniel was sleeping beside me.

Normally, I would have watched him sleep for a moment.

That used to make me feel safe.

That morning, I only wondered how many things I didn’t know.

I got out of bed quietly.

In the kitchen, I found my phone filled with more messages.

Megan had sent a long paragraph.

*I can’t believe you embarrassed me in front of everyone.*

Then another.

*You know me better than anyone. You know I’m not that kind of person.*

Then:

*Maybe you’re just insecure because your marriage isn’t as perfect as you pretend.*

I stared at that message for a long time.

Then I showed it to Daniel.

He went silent.

“She sent that?””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not okay.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you think it wasn’t okay when she told you she’d take you in after our divorce?””

His face fell.

“I deserve that.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You deserve to answer me.””

He sat down.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was embarrassed.””

“Why?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because I knew you’d see it differently.””

I almost smiled.

“You mean you knew I’d be hurt?””

“Yes.””

“And you chose silence.””

He had no answer.

Later that afternoon, I met Ryan at a coffee shop.

I didn’t plan to.

He texted me.

*Can we talk? Please.*

I almost ignored it.

But something told me I needed to go.

Ryan looked like a man who hadn’t slept.

He wrapped both hands around his coffee cup.

“I owe you an apology.””

“For what?””

“For not saying something sooner.””

I sat back.

“What do you mean?””

He looked toward the window.

“Megan does this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Does what?””

“Pushes boundaries. Makes people uncomfortable. Then says everyone is too sensitive.””

I listened quietly.

Ryan sighed.

“Last year at my company party, she spent the entire night flirting with my boss.””

“That’s awful.””

He nodded.

“And when I confronted her, she said I was insecure.””

I looked down.

“Why are you still with her?””

His eyes looked tired.

“Because every time I think about leaving, she reminds me of who she used to be.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because I understood it.

We don’t hold onto people because of who they are.

Sometimes we hold onto who they were.

Ryan reached into his jacket pocket.

“I found something.””

He placed his phone on the table.

A screenshot.

A message from Megan.

I read it.

My hands went cold.

It wasn’t about Daniel.

It was about me.

*Emma has no idea how lucky she is. She thinks everyone sees her as perfect. One day people are going to realize she’s not.*

I looked up.

“Why would she say this?””

Ryan gave me a sad smile.

“Because Megan doesn’t want what you have.””

“What?””

He leaned closer.

“She wants to replace it.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

May you like

There was only one sentence.

*Ask Daniel what happened the night Megan stayed over after your business trip.*
