Amused

Chapter 3: The Night I Wasn’t Home

There are moments when your entire relationship can be divided into two parts.

Before you know something.

And after.

That text message created a line between those two worlds.

Before it, I was angry.

After it, I was afraid.

I sat in my car outside the coffee shop staring at my phone.

The message remained on the screen.

*Ask Daniel what happened the night Megan stayed over after your business trip.*

My hands shook.

Because I remembered that night.

I remembered trusting them both.

I had been away for three days at a work conference.

My flight was delayed.

Daniel had texted me:

*Miss you. Come home soon.*

Megan had texted me too:

*I’ll make sure your husband doesn’t burn the house down while you’re gone 😂*

I had laughed.

I had actually laughed.

That memory made me feel sick.

When I got home, I went straight to Daniel.

He was in the living room.

He knew immediately something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“Who sent this?””

He read it.

The color drained from his face.

“Emma…”

“Answer me.””

He sat down slowly.

“Megan stayed over because her car wouldn’t start.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“She told me.””

He looked relieved for half a second.

Then he realized.

“That’s not the question.””

I stared at him.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked away.

“I swear nothing happened.””

“But something happened.””

He stayed quiet.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he whispered:

“She kissed me.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“When?””

“When I was walking her to the guest room.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“And what did you do?””

“I pushed her away.””

“Then what?””

“I told her it could never happen.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing you.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t understand.””

He reached for my hand.

I moved away.

“I’m not angry because she kissed you.””

His face fell.

“I’m angry because you let me continue loving someone who was trying to hurt me.””

He had no response.

That night, I searched through old memories.

Photos.

Messages.

Everything.

And suddenly, things I had ignored became obvious.

Megan always found reasons to be around Daniel.

She always touched his arm.

Always complimented him.

Always joked that I was “too lucky.””

I remembered one dinner.

She had looked at Daniel and said:

“Emma doesn’t appreciate how handsome you are.””

I laughed then.

Now I wondered why she said it.

The next day, Megan showed up at my house.

I opened the door and immediately regretted it.

She looked perfect.

Hair done.

Makeup flawless.

Like she was arriving for a meeting instead of destroying a friendship.

“Can we talk?””

“No.””

Her smile faded.

“Emma.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re really going to throw away twelve years because of one stupid joke?””

I looked at her.

“One joke?””

“Yes.””

“The lap?””

“Yes.””

“The comment to Daniel?””

Her face changed slightly.

“The kiss?””

Silence.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then she recovered.

“You’re believing him?””

I stared.

“What?””

She crossed her arms.

“You know how men are.””

I felt disgust rise in my chest.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Try to make yourself innocent by making everyone else responsible.””

She looked angry now.

“You’re always so dramatic.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s your favorite word.””

She turned away.

Then stopped.

“Daniel will get tired of this.””

My heart froze.

“What did you say?””

She looked back.

“I’m saying marriages aren’t forever.””

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I’m warning you.””

I closed the door.

My hands were shaking.

But for the first time, I wasn’t confused.

I knew exactly who I was dealing with.

That evening, Daniel and I sat at the kitchen table.

“I want to show you something,” he said.

He opened his laptop.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

An email.

From Megan.

Sent three weeks before the birthday dinner.

The subject line was:

*I know you feel it too.*

May you like

And when I opened the email, the first sentence made my blood run cold.

*“You can’t keep pretending you don’t wonder what life would be like if you chose me instead.””*
