Chapter 5: The Lie Everyone Believed
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I believed Chloe.
Because I was terrified that I did.
There is a special kind of pain that comes from not knowing which person betrayed you.
The friend who planned it.
Or the person who allowed it.
At six in the morning, I found Daniel sitting on the couch.
He looked like he hadn’t slept either.
“I need to ask you something.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
I hated that he knew.
Because it meant he understood exactly what I was thinking.
“Did you ever give Megan a reason to believe you would leave me?””
His face changed.
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
“I am.””
I sat across from him.
“Because she was too confident.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“She sat on your lap in front of thirty people.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“She looked at me like she expected me to be the villain.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because she wanted me to choose.””
The words hung between us.
“Choose?””
He nodded.
“She kept saying you didn’t understand me.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“She said that?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She said we were similar.””
I laughed.
“Similar?””
“She said you and I were growing apart.””
I looked away.
“And what did you say?””
“I told her she was wrong.””
“When?””
“Every time.””
I studied his face.
“And you never told me.””
“I thought protecting our marriage meant handling it myself.””
I whispered:
“No. Protecting our marriage meant protecting me.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Later that day, Ryan called me.
His voice sounded different.
Serious.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Megan’s been planning this for months.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“She told someone.””
“Who?””
“My sister.””
I went quiet.
Ryan continued.
“She said Megan talked about your marriage like it was a competition.””
“A competition?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Ryan…”
“I’m sorry.””
“What did she say?””
He was silent for a moment.
Then:
“She said, ‘Emma has everything people think they want. I just need one moment where everyone sees she doesn’t.’”
My hands went cold.
A moment.
That dinner wasn’t spontaneous.
The lap.
The smile.
The confidence.
It was planned.
I looked back at the birthday dinner in my mind.
The empty chair.
The timing.
The way Megan waited until I walked in.
She wanted me to see.
She wanted everyone to see.
That evening, I went through old photos.
I found one from my wedding.
Megan standing beside me.
Smiling.
Holding my bouquet.
For years, I thought that picture represented friendship.
Now it felt like a warning.
Then I noticed something.
Behind us, near the doorway, was Megan’s phone.
She was taking a picture.
Of me.
Of Daniel.
Of us.
I zoomed in.
My heart started racing.
Because the picture wasn’t from the wedding.
It was from years later.
A random family barbecue.
Megan had been watching us.
Collecting moments.
Why?
My phone rang.
It was Chloe.
I answered immediately.
“Emma, I found something.””
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“I checked the birthday dinner photos.””
“Why?””
“Because I remembered something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Megan wasn’t just trying to embarrass you.””
I sat up.
“What do you mean?””
“She wasn’t trying to prove Daniel liked her.””
My heart pounded.
“Then what was she trying to prove?””
Chloe took a breath.
“She was trying to prove something about you.””
“What?””
Silence.
Then Chloe said:
“Emma… look at the person who took the photo of Megan sitting on Daniel’s lap.””
I froze.
Because I suddenly realized something.
The photo that exposed everything…
May you like
was not taken by a stranger.
It was taken by someone Megan trusted.
