Amused

Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Mask

I read Megan’s words again and again.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I couldn’t accept them.

The person who wrote those words was the same person who held my hand while I cried over my wedding dress.

The same person who sat beside me when my father was sick.

The same person I called when I needed advice.

How could someone know you that well and still choose to hurt you?

Daniel sat across from me.

“I should have shown you this sooner.””

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because I was hoping she would stop.””

That answer hurt.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was weak.

“You were hoping my best friend would suddenly respect my marriage?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

I closed the laptop.

“And when she didn’t?””

“I thought I could handle it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

For the first time in days, Daniel wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting everything.

And somehow that made it harder.

The following week, I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to chase Megan.

I wasn’t going to beg for an explanation.

I wanted the truth.

So I invited everyone from the birthday dinner to my house.

Not for revenge.

For clarity.

When Megan arrived, she looked surprised.

She expected anger.

She expected screaming.

Instead, I offered her coffee.

That confused her more.

“What is this?””

“A conversation.””

She smiled.

“Finally.””

Everyone sat in the living room.

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

Chloe looked nervous.

Megan crossed her legs confidently.

“I hope this means you’re ready to apologize.””

I almost laughed.

“Apologize?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“For humiliating me.””

I looked around.

Nobody spoke.

Then I said:

“Tell everyone what you whispered to Daniel before you sat on his lap.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Chloe spoke.

“I heard you.””

Megan looked at her.

“You?””

“Yes.””

Megan laughed.

“Chloe, you were drunk.””

“I wasn’t.””

The room became quiet.

I looked at Megan.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

She didn’t answer.

Ryan stared at her.

“Tell her.””

Megan looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

That sentence changed something.

Because it wasn’t the sentence of someone innocent.

It was the sentence of someone exposed.

Ryan stood.

“No. I’ve stayed out of this for years.””

Megan’s face hardened.

“Don’t embarrass me.””

He laughed sadly.

“Embarrass you?””

He shook his head.

“You don’t know what that word means.””

Everyone went silent.

Ryan looked at me.

“I’m sorry, Emma.””

I nodded.

“Why?””

“Because I watched it happen.””

Megan rolled her eyes.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No,” Ryan said.

“This is the first time people are finally seeing you.””

Her face changed.

She looked at Daniel.

“You’re really letting her do this?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“She didn’t do anything.””

That seemed to hurt Megan more than anger would have.

Because she realized she had lost control.

After everyone left, I sat alone outside.

The night was quiet.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Chloe.

*There’s something else I didn’t tell you.*

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

*I found out why Megan was so confident that night.*

I typed:

*Why?*

The reply came immediately.

*Because she thought Daniel was going to leave you.*

My heart stopped.

May you like

Then Chloe sent one final message.

*She wasn’t guessing. She said Daniel promised her something.*
