Amused

Chapter 7: The Second Signature

The words followed me all the way home.

Someone had tried to register another charge against Patricia's property using my name.

I barely remembered driving.

When I finally parked outside my house, I sat behind the wheel with both hands gripping it.

For six years, I had believed that marriage meant trusting someone enough to share a life.

Now I was beginning to understand that Daniel had interpreted that trust as permission to make decisions for me.

My phone rang.

Laura.

“Sarah, I received a call from Patricia's attorney. I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning.””

“What's happening?””

“There's evidence of a second financing application connected to the property.””

“Did they use my signature?””

“They appear to have submitted a document bearing your name. We need to establish whether it was authorized.””

I closed my eyes.

“It wasn't.””

“I assumed as much. Bring your identification and any original documents you have. Do not contact the lender yourself.””

After we ended the call, I opened my laptop.

I changed every password I could think of.

Email.

Banking.

Investment accounts.

Cloud storage.

I removed Daniel's devices from my account access and enabled additional security.

Then I checked my credit records.

At first, everything looked normal.

No unfamiliar credit cards.

No unexpected loans.

No accounts I didn't recognize.

I was beginning to breathe again when I noticed an inquiry from a financial services company I had never used.

The date was three months earlier.

I opened the details.

It was connected to a property-backed financing application.

The applicant's name was Sarah Thompson.

I felt my blood run cold.

I downloaded the report.

The application listed my employer, income, and personal details.

All correct.

It also listed Daniel as my authorized representative.

I had never authorized him.

I called Laura.

“There's a credit inquiry on my report.””

“Send it to me.””

“I will.””

“Sarah, I want you to understand that we are now dealing with more than a family disagreement. We need to protect your identity and establish exactly what was submitted.””

I looked at the document.

The application had been declined because the lender couldn't verify the property ownership arrangement.

I felt sick.

“Could they have approved it?””

“Possibly. But the immediate priority is to notify the relevant institutions that you dispute the application.””

I spent the next hour documenting everything.

By the time I finished, my phone was vibrating again.

Melissa.

I ignored the call.

Then a message appeared.

*Melissa: Sarah, we need to talk. Daniel says you're refusing to help with the family fund.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

*Melissa: I already paid a deposit on the house. You can't just change your mind now.*

I typed:

*Sarah: I never agreed to contribute to your house purchase.*

Her response was immediate.

*Melissa: Daniel said you approved everything.*

I replied:

*Sarah: Daniel doesn't have permission to make financial commitments on my behalf.*

She called again.

This time, I answered.

“What?”” I asked.

“Sarah, are you seriously going to let me lose my deposit?””

“That's between you and the seller.””

“You promised!””

“I didn't.””

“Daniel said the money was guaranteed!””

“Then Daniel lied.””

She made an angry noise.

“You have no idea what you've done to this family.””

I leaned back.

“Melissa, how much did you pay as a deposit?””

“That's none of your business.””

“Then my finances are none of yours.””

She went silent.

Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.

“You know what? Maybe you should ask Patricia why she wanted you to become part of that property company so badly.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Melissa laughed bitterly.

“Ask her where the original twenty-five thousand dollars was supposed to go.””

I straightened.

“What twenty-five thousand dollars?””

But Melissa had already ended the call.

I immediately rang Patricia.

She answered after several attempts.

“Sarah?””

“Melissa just mentioned an original twenty-five-thousand-dollar payment. What was she talking about?””

Patricia sighed.

“Please come over tomorrow. I think it's time you knew everything.””

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“Daniel wasn't the only person making plans with your money.””

And the call ended.

I sat motionless.

The family wasn't simply expecting me to finance their celebrations.

May you like

There was a larger arrangement.

And apparently, Patricia had known about it.
