Amused

Chapter 9: The Family Meeting

Two days later, Daniel requested a family meeting.

His message was unusually polite.

**Daniel: I think everyone needs to sit down and clear up the misunderstandings. Mom is upset. Melissa is upset.

I'm upset. We can't keep living like this.**

I read it twice.

Then I put my phone down.

Laura had already advised me not to attend any meeting without legal representation.

I intended to follow her advice.

But then Melissa sent me a message.

*Melissa: We're meeting Saturday at Mom's house. You need to come because this affects everyone.*

I didn't respond.

An hour later, Patricia called.

“Sarah, I know you don't want to see us, but I think you deserve to hear what Daniel has to say.””

I hesitated.

“What exactly is he planning?””

“He says he wants to apologize.””

I almost laughed.

“Does he?””

“Yes.””

“Has he mentioned the property applications?””

There was a pause.

“No.””

“Has he mentioned the investment account?””

Another pause.

“No.””

“Then what exactly is he apologizing for?””

Patricia sighed.

“Sarah, I don't know anymore.””

Her honesty caught me off guard.

For once, she wasn't defending him.

She sounded tired.

“I'll think about it,” I said.

After ending the call, I contacted Laura.

She agreed to accompany me, provided we made it clear that the meeting was not an opportunity to negotiate or authorize any financial arrangement.

I agreed.

Saturday afternoon, I arrived at Patricia's house.

The living room was full.

Daniel sat beside Melissa.

Ryan was near the window.

Patricia sat at the head of the table.

Two other relatives were present.

When Daniel saw Laura, his expression hardened.

“Why did you bring a lawyer?””

“Because you keep putting my name on financial documents.””

He looked away.

“Fine. Whatever.””

Patricia stood.

“Everyone, please sit down.””

I remained near the doorway.

Laura placed her briefcase on a chair.

“Before this meeting begins, I want everyone to understand that Sarah is here voluntarily. She has not agreed to any financial obligation, and nothing discussed today should be treated as authorization.””

Melissa rolled her eyes.

“This is exactly what I'm talking about. We can't even have a family conversation without legal threats.””

I looked at her.

“Then perhaps we should have had a family conversation before you requested champagne on my account.””

Ryan looked down.

Melissa's cheeks flushed.

Patricia cleared her throat.

“Daniel, you wanted this meeting. Explain.””

Daniel stood.

He had prepared a printed statement.

I could see several pages in his hands.

“I know mistakes have been made.””

I folded my arms.

He continued.

“I've been under a lot of pressure. I've been trying to support Mom, help Melissa, and maintain my marriage.””

I stared at him.

“By forging signatures?””

He paused.

“I'm getting to that.””

He looked around the room.

“I made some poor financial decisions. I acknowledge that.””

“Poor decisions?”” Ryan muttered.

Daniel ignored him.

“But I never intended to hurt anyone.””

He turned toward me.

“Sarah, I love you. I wanted us to build something together.””

I said nothing.

He placed the printed statement on the table.

“The family fund was supposed to be an investment. It would have helped everyone.””

Laura spoke calmly.

“Who authorized the use of Sarah's name?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We discussed it.””

“No,” I said.

“We didn't.””

He sighed.

“Sarah, please.””

I opened my folder and removed the original emails.

“Here's the restaurant correspondence. Here's the sponsorship agreement. Here's the property company filing. And here's the credit inquiry.””

I placed each document on the table.

“Show me where I agreed.””

Nobody spoke.

Melissa looked at the papers.

Then at Daniel.

“You said she approved the family fund.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I thought she would.””

Melissa's voice rose.

“You told me the money was guaranteed!””

I turned toward her.

“How much did you already spend?””

She hesitated.

“That's not relevant.””

“How much?””

“Five thousand dollars.””

I stared at her.

“You paid a deposit on a house using money you hadn't received?””

“I thought it was coming!””

“From me?””

She looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

Ryan finally spoke.

“Melissa, you knew this was wrong.””

She turned on him.

“Stay out of this.””

“You told me Daniel had guaranteed the money.””

“He did!””

“Using Sarah's name without her permission.””

Melissa slammed her hand onto the table.

“You think I care about the paperwork? I was trying to secure a better home for our children!””

I looked at her.

“And I was trying to secure a future with a husband who wouldn't steal my identity.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sarah, please don't use words like that.””

Laura interrupted.

“The documents speak for themselves. Any questions about the disputed applications should be addressed through the appropriate legal channels.””

Patricia began crying.

“I never wanted this.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you sign the sponsorship agreement?””

She wiped her face.

“Daniel told me you had approved it.””

“And you didn't think to ask me?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I nodded.

“That's the problem. Nobody ever asks me. You all just assume my money is available.””

Daniel suddenly raised his voice.

“Because you're family!””

I looked directly at him.

“Family doesn't mean ownership.””

He stared at me.

For the first time, I could see that he understood I wasn't going to give in.

Then Ryan reached into his jacket.

“I think everyone should see something.””

He placed his phone on the table.

It was a recording of a conversation between Daniel and Melissa.

Ryan explained that Melissa had sent it to him accidentally during an argument. He had kept it because he suspected something wasn't right.

Laura advised that we not speculate about its legal significance, but Ryan played it.

Daniel's voice came through clearly.

“Once the company is established, Sarah won't have much choice. Everything will be presented as a family obligation.””

Melissa laughed.

“And if she refuses?””

“Mom will make her feel guilty. She always does.””

Then Daniel said something that made the entire room freeze.

“Besides, by the time she figures everything out, the loans will already be approved.””

I looked at him.

He was staring at the phone.

Melissa whispered, “Turn that off.””

Ryan stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Daniel.

“Were you planning to take loans against the company using my financial history?””

He didn't answer.

Laura spoke.

“Daniel, are you willing to clarify whether Sarah ever authorized you to act on her behalf?””

He stared at the floor.

“Not everything was finalized.””

“That wasn't the question.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I thought she would agree once she understood.””

I shook my head.

“You didn't want me to understand. You wanted me to discover it after everything was already done.””

He looked up.

“That's not true.””

I pointed to the recording.

“Then explain that.””

He said nothing.

Melissa suddenly stood.

“This is ridiculous. Daniel was trying to help everybody. Sarah has enough money to solve all of this, and she's choosing to let us suffer.””

I turned toward her.

“Then perhaps you should ask Daniel to pay for your house deposit.””

“He doesn't have the money!””

“Exactly.””

She opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Ryan looked at her.

“Melissa, stop. You've known about the money problems for months.””

She turned toward him.

“Don't you dare take her side.””

“I'm not taking sides. I'm telling the truth.””

Melissa grabbed her handbag.

“You're all against me!””

Patricia stood.

“Melissa, sit down.””

“No! I'm tired of being treated like the villain!””

I looked at her.

“Then stop demanding money that doesn't belong to you.””

She stormed toward the hallway.

Daniel followed her.

“Melissa, wait.””

For a moment, the living room was silent except for Patricia's quiet crying.

Then Laura closed her briefcase.

“I think we've heard enough for today.””

Daniel returned.

“Sarah, don't leave.””

I took a step toward the door.

“Stay where you are.””

His expression changed.

“I'm your husband.””

“And I'm the person whose name you've been using.””

He looked around the room.

Nobody defended him.

Not even Patricia.

He lowered his voice.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Please. Just five minutes.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel, you had six years to talk to me honestly.””

His face tightened.

“You're making this impossible.””

I shook my head.

“No. I'm making it impossible for you to continue doing this.””

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Daniel shouted my name.

But I didn't turn around.

That evening, I received an email from Laura.

The subject line read:

*IMPORTANT: ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS RECEIVED*

I opened it.

There were three attachments.

The first was a bank statement.

The second was a copy of the property company registration.

The third was an internal financial projection.

I opened the projection.

At the top was a list of expected funding sources.

Patricia's property.

Melissa's proposed house purchase.

The family sponsorship agreement.

And my investment portfolio.

But one line near the bottom caught my attention.

*Initial capital requirement: $25,000.*

Beside it was a handwritten note.

To be transferred immediately after Sarah's signature is verified.

I read it again.

Then I noticed the date.

The document had been created two weeks before Patricia's birthday.

And beneath the handwritten note was another sentence.

Once the first transfer clears, proceed with the remaining financing.

I leaned back in my chair.

The birthday dinner suddenly made sense.

It hadn't been just an expensive celebration.

It had been the beginning of a financial arrangement that depended on one thing.

My signature.

My money.

My silence.

My phone rang.

Laura.

“Sarah, there's one more document we need to discuss.””

“What is it?””

“An application connected to your investment account.””

My heart started pounding.

“What kind of application?””

“A transfer authorization.””

I stared at the email.

“Was it approved?””

“No. The provider flagged it because the verification details didn't match your usual security profile.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who submitted it?””

Laura paused.

Then she said:

“Daniel's name appears in the electronic submission records.””

I felt the room grow cold.

But before I could respond, another email arrived.

This one came directly from my investment provider.

*URGENT SECURITY NOTICE: A SECOND TRANSFER REQUEST HAS BEEN SUBMITTED.*

And this time, the requested amount was not twenty-five thousand dollars.

It was my entire investment balance.
