Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Account

I read Ryan's message several times.

Daniel's brother-in-law had never contacted me privately before.

Our relationship had always been polite but distant. He usually allowed Melissa to handle family conversations, especially when money was involved.

I looked at Emily.

“Ryan just messaged me.””

She raised an eyebrow.

“What does he want?””

I showed her the screen.

“Do you trust him?””

“Not particularly.””

“Then don't meet him alone.””

I typed a response.

*Sarah: What do you want to tell me?*

His reply came almost immediately.

*Ryan: It's about the twenty thousand dollars Patricia gave Daniel. Melissa told me you found out. I don't think Daniel told you the whole story.*

I looked at Emily.

“Here we go again.””

Another message arrived.

*Ryan: Can you meet me tomorrow morning? Somewhere public. I can show you the bank records.*

I hesitated.

Then I agreed to meet him at a coffee shop near my office.

The following morning, Ryan was already sitting at a corner table.

He looked nervous.

His coffee was untouched.

When I approached, he stood.

“Sarah.””

“Ryan.””

He glanced around before sitting again.

“Thanks for coming.””

I placed my purse beside me.

“You said you had information about the money.””

He nodded.

“Melissa doesn't know I'm meeting you.””

“Why?””

“Because she'd lose her mind.””

I waited.

Ryan rubbed his hands together.

“Last year, Patricia sold a small piece of land she owned outside the city. She received around thirty-eight thousand dollars.””

I listened carefully.

“Okay.””

“She told Daniel she wanted to give him twenty thousand because she thought you two needed help with the house.””

“But he sent twelve thousand to Melissa.””

“Right.””

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“Except Melissa never received twelve thousand.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He transferred eight thousand to her account. Four thousand went somewhere else.””

I leaned forward.

“Where?””

Ryan took out his phone.

“I have a screenshot from a conversation Melissa had with Daniel.””

He placed it on the table.

The message was dated November 21.

*Melissa: You said the remaining four thousand would be sent after Mom's birthday.*

*Daniel: I told you I need to handle something first.*

*Melissa: Don't forget. Ryan already knows about the loan.*

*Daniel: He doesn't need to know everything.*

I looked up.

“What was the four thousand for?””

Ryan shook his head.

“That's what I'm trying to find out.””

He opened another screenshot.

This one showed a transfer from Daniel to an account belonging to someone named Victor Hale.

$4,000.

The date matched the conversation.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Ryan looked at me.

“That's the part I don't understand.””

He scrolled through his phone.

“I searched the name because Melissa mentioned him once. He's apparently a private lender.””

I sat back.

“A lender?””

Ryan nodded.

“Daniel borrowed money from him several months before Patricia gave him the twenty thousand.””

My stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Ten thousand, I think.””

I stared at him.

“Why would Daniel borrow ten thousand dollars?””

Ryan looked down.

“Gambling.””

For a moment, the coffee shop seemed to go silent.

“What?””

Ryan lowered his voice.

“He got involved in online sports betting. At first, it was small amounts. Then he started chasing losses.””

I felt my fingers go cold.

“Are you sure?””

Ryan nodded.

“I saw the messages. Melissa told me about it after she found out he had borrowed money.””

“Did Patricia know?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at the screenshots again.

The four thousand dollars suddenly made sense.

Daniel had used part of his mother's money to repay a private lender.

The money he had claimed was meant for our house renovations had been used to cover debts I knew nothing about.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Ryan looked genuinely ashamed.

“Because I think Melissa is planning to ask you for more money.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Daniel told her that the family sponsorship agreement would solve everything.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Everything?””

Ryan nodded.

“He told her that once you agreed to the annual contribution, they could use the money to clear some outstanding debts and cover family expenses.””

I slowly put down my coffee.

“Did he say how much debt he has?””

Ryan hesitated.

“No.””

“Then why do you think you know enough to warn me?””

“Because I saw something in Melissa's phone.””

He took another screenshot from his gallery.

It was a message from Daniel.

*Daniel: Once Sarah signs the agreement, I can take care of Victor and the rest. Mom won't have to worry anymore.*

Below it, Melissa had replied:

*Melissa: What if she refuses?*

Daniel's response was chillingly casual.

*Daniel: She won't. She always gives in eventually.*

I read the message twice.

Then I placed the phone on the table.

“Ryan, why didn't you tell me sooner?””

He looked embarrassed.

“Because I benefited from it too.””

I waited.

“Melissa used some of the money Daniel gave her to cover our car payments. I knew it came from Patricia, but I didn't ask enough questions.””

He looked directly at me.

“I should have.””

I appreciated his honesty, but I wasn't ready to forgive anyone.

“Do you have proof of the betting debts?””

He nodded.

“Some screenshots. I can send them.””

“Please do.””

He looked at me carefully.

“Sarah, there's something else.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

He didn't smile.

“Patricia has been telling the family that you're planning to give Daniel the money from your investment account.””

My stomach tightened.

“What investment account?””

“The one you opened before you got married.””

I stared at him.

“How does she know about that?””

“Daniel told Melissa.””

I slowly sat back.

My investment account was separate from our joint finances. It contained savings I'd accumulated before marriage, along with investments I'd made independently.

Daniel knew it existed.

But he didn't know the full balance.

At least, I had assumed he didn't.

“Did he tell them how much was in it?””

Ryan nodded.

“He said you had enough to cover the family fund for several years.””

I looked through the window.

Cars moved along the street.

People hurried past carrying coffee and shopping bags.

Everything outside seemed ordinary.

Inside, my understanding of my marriage was collapsing piece by piece.

“Ryan, did you know about the forged signature?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Did Melissa?””

He hesitated.

“I think she knew Daniel was handling the arrangements.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I don't know if she knew he signed your name.””

I stood.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Ryan stood too.

“Sarah, I know this is a lot.””

“It is.””

“I'm sorry.””

I picked up my purse.

“One more question. Did Daniel ever ask you for money?””

Ryan nodded.

“Twice.””

“How much?””

“Three thousand the first time. Five thousand the second.””

“Did you lend it to him?””

“No. Melissa refused.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she said he had already borrowed too much.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

Apparently, everyone knew Daniel had financial problems.

Everyone except me.

That afternoon, I met with an attorney named Laura Bennett.

Emily had recommended her.

I brought every document I had collected.

Laura listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she arranged the papers into separate piles.

“First, I want you to understand something,” she said.

“A marriage does not automatically give either spouse permission to forge the other's signature or authorize payments using their financial information.””

“I understand.””

“Second, don't confront him again until we've reviewed the documents and secured your accounts.””

I nodded.

“Third, I want you to obtain your credit reports and check for unfamiliar accounts or applications.””

My stomach tightened.

“Do you think he could have opened something in my name?””

“I don't know. But given what you've described, we shouldn't assume he hasn't.””

She pointed to the sponsorship agreement.

“This document is particularly concerning. It appears to represent a financial commitment you say you never authorized.””

“Can it be enforced?””

“That depends on the circumstances and applicable law. But don't sign anything, don't acknowledge the debt, and don't make payments simply because someone pressures you.””

I looked down.

“Laura, what if my husband has been doing this for years?””

“Then we need to establish the full picture.””

She gave me a list of records to gather.

Then she asked a question I hadn't expected.

“Do you have any reason to believe he has access to your email or personal devices?””

I thought about it.

Daniel knew my phone password.

He had used my laptop several times.

He also knew the answers to some of my security questions.

“I don't know.””

“Change your passwords from a secure device. Enable two-factor authentication. And review all devices connected to your accounts.””

I nodded.

Before I left, Laura handed me her card.

“One more thing, Sarah.””

“Yes?””

“Don't let anyone convince you that protecting yourself is the same thing as destroying your marriage.””

I swallowed.

“I'll try to remember that.””

At 6:40 p.m., I returned home.

Daniel's car was parked outside.

I stopped.

He was sitting on the front steps.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Where have you been?””

“Working.””

“You've been ignoring my calls.””

“I asked you to put everything in writing.””

He stepped closer.

“Sarah, this has gone too far.””

I unlocked the door.

He followed me inside.

“Mom is devastated.””

I placed my purse on the counter.

“I'm sure.””

“She feels betrayed.””

I turned around.

“By whom?””

“By you.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel, did you borrow money from someone named Victor Hale?””

His face changed.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Then he looked away.

“Who told you that?””

“So it's true.””

“It's not what you think.””

“How much do you owe him?””

He walked toward the living room.

“Sarah, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

He sat down and covered his face.

“It started last year.””

“With gambling?””

He looked up sharply.

“Who told you?””

“Answer me.””

He exhaled.

“Yes.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How much?””

“It's complicated.””

“Daniel, how much?””

He looked at the floor.

“About eighteen thousand.””

I closed my eyes.

Eighteen thousand dollars.

I thought of the four thousand dollars he'd taken from his mother's gift.

The unexplained transfers.

The money he'd asked me to send for emergencies.

“How much did you lose?””

“I don't know.””

“How much do you owe?””

“Eighteen thousand.””

“Are you sure?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was becoming painfully familiar.

“Daniel.””

“Maybe twenty-two.””

I stared at him.

“Twenty-two thousand dollars?””

“Some interest accumulated.””

I sat down opposite him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I was going to stop.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

“You had a year.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“I was embarrassed.””

I let out a slow breath.

“So you borrowed money, lost it, used your mother's money to repay part of it, and then created a family sponsorship agreement using my name.””

He looked at me.

“When you say it like that, it sounds terrible.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“How else should I say it?””

He leaned forward.

“Sarah, I need your help.””

There it was.

The real reason he had come home.

“How much?””

He swallowed.

“Ten thousand. Just to clear the immediate debt. I'll pay you back.””

I stared at him.

“Absolutely not.””

“Please.””

“No.””

“Sarah, this lender is threatening me.””

“Then contact the authorities if he's threatening you.””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Victor knows people. He said if I don't pay by Friday, he'll come to the house.””

I felt a chill run through me.

“Does he know where we live?””

Daniel nodded.

I stood.

“Why would you put our home in danger?””

“I didn't mean for this to happen.””

I looked at him.

“Did you use our address when you borrowed the money?””

He didn't answer.

I took out my phone.

“I'm calling Laura.””

Daniel jumped up.

“No! Don't involve lawyers!””

“Then stop asking me to solve problems you created.””

He reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

“Don't touch me.””

He froze.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered, “If you don't help me, Mom will lose everything.””

I stared at him.

“What does your mother have to do with this?””

His face crumpled.

“Because I borrowed the money against her house.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

He looked at me with frightened eyes.

“I used her property documents as security.””

I could barely breathe.

“Daniel, what exactly did you sign?””

He lowered his head.

And before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was Patricia.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Sarah, you need to come over immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has just delivered a notice to my house.””

I looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely white.

May you like

Patricia continued.

“Apparently, Daniel used my house as collateral for a loan, and the lender is threatening to take it.””
