Amused

Chapter 3: The Celebration They Had Planned Behind My Back

I didn't sleep that night.

At 1:30 a.m., I was still sitting at the dining table, surrounded by printed invoices, screenshots, and copies of documents I had never seen before.

The restaurant manager had sent everything.

Every email.

Every payment request.

Every change Daniel had made.

There were fourteen pages in total.

I read them slowly.

The first few were ordinary booking correspondence.

Daniel had asked about the private room, the menu, and the availability of a Saturday evening.

Then, three weeks before the birthday dinner, his tone changed.

He requested premium upgrades.

He asked whether the restaurant could accommodate additional guests.

He asked about photography and entertainment.

And finally, he wrote:

My wife will be covering the total amount. Please make sure all additional charges are added to her account.

I stopped reading.

My wife.

Not Sarah.

Not Mrs. Thompson.

Just a convenient source of payment.

I continued.

Another email caught my attention.

It was from Melissa.

*Subject: Mom's birthday arrangements*

She had written:

Daniel said Sarah is handling the entire bill. Can you please add the champagne package? Mom deserves something special this year.

The restaurant had replied that the package would cost an additional $480.

Melissa's response was immediate.

That's fine. Add it to Sarah's account.

I sat motionless.

Melissa hadn't merely benefited from the arrangement.

She had participated in it.

Another email showed that she had requested the premium dessert selection.

Another showed that she had asked the restaurant to reserve a separate table for her children.

The total kept growing.

At 2:15 a.m., I called my friend Emily.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Sarah? Are you okay?””

“I'm sorry. I know it's late.””

“What happened?””

I looked at the papers.

“I think Daniel has been using my information to arrange expenses without telling me.””

Emily was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “What do you mean?””

I explained everything.

The birthday dinner.

The forged signature.

The additional charges.

The upcoming reunion.

When I finished, Emily exhaled sharply.

“Sarah, this isn't a misunderstanding.””

“I know.””

“Have you contacted your bank?””

“Not yet.””

“Then do it first thing tomorrow. Change your passwords. Check your credit. And save every document.””

“I will.””

“Has Daniel ever done anything like this before?””

I hesitated.

Then I remembered something.

Six months earlier, Daniel had asked me to send him a copy of my driver's license because he said he needed it for an insurance form.

I'd sent it without thinking.

A few weeks later, he had asked me to confirm my income for a mortgage application.

I had refused because I didn't want to take on additional debt.

At the time, he'd seemed disappointed.

Now I wondered what else he had attempted.

“Emily?””

“Yes?””

“I think there's more.””

“Then we're going to find it.””

At 8:30 the next morning, I called my bank.

I explained that I had discovered unauthorized payment arrangements connected to my personal card.

The representative placed a temporary restriction on the account and advised me to replace the card.

I also changed my banking passwords.

Then I contacted the restaurant again.

Michael was helpful.

He confirmed that no additional payment had been processed and that the future reservation could be canceled without charging me.

I asked him to preserve all communications.

He agreed.

At 10:15, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I let it ring.

He called again.

Then Patricia.

Then Melissa.

Finally, a message appeared.

*Daniel: We need to talk. Call me.*

I replied:

*Sarah: Put everything you want to discuss in writing.*

His response came immediately.

*Daniel: Don't be ridiculous. I'm your husband.*

I didn't answer.

Ten minutes later, Emily arrived at my house carrying coffee and a box of pastries.

She took one look at the papers covering my dining table.

“Oh, Sarah.””

I handed her the folder.

“Read the emails from Melissa.””

Emily sat down.

As she read, her expression changed.

“Your sister-in-law actually requested upgrades and told them to charge you?””

“Yes.””

“She knew?””

“Apparently.””

Emily shook her head.

“This is unbelievable.””

I opened another attachment.

It was the proposed invoice for the family reunion.

The estimated cost was $8,700.

Sixty guests.

Premium buffet.

Open bar.

Live music.

Decorations.

A photographer.

I pointed to the bottom.

“Look at this.””

Emily leaned forward.

There was a handwritten note from Daniel.

Sarah will settle the full amount after the event. Please keep the final invoice separate from the birthday celebration.

Emily looked at me.

“He planned to do this again.””

“Yes.””

“And he thought you wouldn't find out until afterward?””

I nodded.

She put down the papers.

“Have you considered speaking to an attorney?””

“I have.””

“Good.””

I looked at the clock.

“There's something else I want to do first.””

“What?””

“I want to know how much of this has happened before.””

Emily frowned.

“What do you mean?””

I opened my laptop and logged into our shared household spreadsheet.

Daniel and I had created it when we bought our house.

It tracked mortgage payments, utilities, insurance, groceries, and other shared expenses.

I scrolled through the records.

For the past three years, I had contributed roughly seventy percent of our household expenses because I earned more.

That arrangement had been mutually agreed upon.

But there were several unexplained transfers.

$600.

$850.

$1,200.

$450.

All labeled as household expenses.

I clicked on the first transaction.

It was a transfer to Daniel's personal account.

The description said:

Family support.

I checked the second.

Same thing.

The third.

Same thing.

I opened our archived messages.

A conversation from eight months earlier caught my attention.

*Daniel:* Mom needs help with the property taxes.

*Sarah:* How much?

*Daniel:* Around $1,200. I'll cover half.

*Sarah:* Okay. Send me the details.

I remembered sending him $600 that evening.

But the spreadsheet showed I had transferred $1,200.

I opened the bank statement.

The money had gone into our shared account first.

Then Daniel had transferred the full amount to his mother.

He had told me he was paying half.

He had actually used all of my contribution.

I checked another transaction.

A car repair for Melissa.

Daniel had told me the family was splitting the cost.

The bank records showed I had paid the entire amount.

Emily watched me in silence.

“Sarah, how much money are we talking about?””

“I don't know yet.””

I kept scrolling.

Then I found something that made my hands go cold.

A transfer of $4,000.

The description read:

Emergency family expenses.

I searched my messages.

Daniel had asked me for the money ten months earlier.

He'd said his mother had an unexpected medical expense and needed temporary help.

I had sent it without asking questions.

But there was no record of the money being returned.

I called Daniel.

This time, he answered.

“Finally.””

“Daniel, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Where did the four thousand dollars I transferred last December go?””

Silence.

Then he said, “What are you talking about?””

“The emergency family expenses. You said your mother needed help.””

“She did.””

“Then why did you transfer the money to Melissa's account?””

He didn't answer immediately.

I looked at the bank record.

“Daniel?””

“Melissa was having problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

“It's private.””

“You used money I gave you for your mother's emergency and sent it to your sister?””

“She needed it more.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did your mother actually have an emergency?””

“Sarah, why are you interrogating me?””

“Answer the question.””

He sighed.

“She had some bills.””

“How much?””

“I don't remember.””

“You asked me for four thousand dollars.””

“And I explained why.””

“No. You told me your mother needed medical help.””

His voice hardened.

“Are you accusing me of lying?””

I looked at Emily.

She was listening carefully.

“Yes,” I said.

“I am.””

Daniel went quiet.

Then he said something that made my stomach twist.

“Sarah, you have plenty of money. Why are you suddenly acting like every dollar matters?””

I stared at the wall.

“Because it's my money.””

“We're married.””

“Then why didn't you tell me where it was going?””

“Because I knew you'd make a big deal out of it.””

I slowly ended the call.

Emily leaned forward.

“That's enough.””

I nodded.

For the first time, I wasn't interested in arguing with him.

I wanted records.

I wanted answers.

And I wanted to understand how far this had gone.

At noon, Patricia sent a message.

*Patricia: I hope you've calmed down. Daniel tells me you're making accusations about money. This is not how a respectable wife behaves.*

I read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

*Patricia: Melissa is very upset. You embarrassed her in front of the restaurant staff. You need to apologize.*

I typed a response.

*Sarah: Did you know Daniel had arranged the family reunion using my name and signature?*

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally:

*Patricia: I don't know what you're talking about.*

I sent her the screenshot of the reservation.

There was no response for several minutes.

Then my phone rang.

Patricia.

I answered.

“What is this supposed to mean?”” she demanded.

“It means Daniel arranged another event and put my name on the payment agreement.””

“He told me everything was already taken care of.””

“Did you know it would cost $8,700?””

She went quiet.

“Patricia?””

“I didn't ask for an expensive party.””

“But you accepted it.””

“I thought my son was paying.””

“That's what he told you?””

“Yes.””

I leaned back in my chair.

“Then perhaps you should ask him why he used my name.””

She lowered her voice.

“Sarah, I don't want family matters discussed outside the family.””

“Neither do I. That's why I'm speaking to you directly.””

“You're making Daniel look dishonest.””

“He signed my name.””

“I'm sure there was a reason.””

I closed my eyes.

Even now, she was defending him.

“Patricia, would you be comfortable if someone used your signature to arrange an $8,700 expense?””

“Don't be dramatic.””

“That's what I thought.””

I ended the call.

Emily shook her head.

“She knows more than she's admitting.””

“Maybe.””

“Are you going to let them pressure you into paying?””

I looked at the invoice.

“No.””

That afternoon, Daniel came home.

I heard his key in the lock.

When he entered, he found me sitting at the dining table with Emily beside me.

His eyes moved between us.

“Why is she here?””

“She's my friend.””

“This is a private matter.””

Emily stood.

“I can leave if Sarah wants me to.””

I shook my head.

“Stay.””

Daniel dropped his keys onto the counter.

“Sarah, I want to resolve this.””

“Good. Sit down.””

He looked at the folder.

“What is all this?””

“Documentation.””

He sighed.

“Can we please stop treating our marriage like a business?””

I opened the first page.

“Did you authorize the additional restaurant charges?””

“Yes.””

“Did I approve them?””

He hesitated.

“I thought you would.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“No.””

“Did you sign my name?””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“Did you arrange the family reunion using my payment information?””

He looked toward Emily.

“Can we talk alone?””

“No.””

He pulled out a chair.

“Fine. I made some arrangements. That's all.””

“Why?””

“Because Mom wanted to bring the family together.””

“And you decided I would pay?””

“You're the one with the money.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel, do you hear yourself?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I knew you'd be difficult about it.””

“Difficult?””

“You always want every expense explained. You make everything feel transactional.””

I looked at the invoices.

“Because apparently, if I don't ask questions, people spend my money without permission.””

He stood.

“I'm tired of this.””

“So am I.””

He paced toward the window.

“Mom has been telling everyone how wonderful the birthday dinner was supposed to be. Now she's embarrassed.””

I said nothing.

“Melissa is angry because she had to pay for her own meal.””

Still nothing.

“And I look like an idiot because my wife walked out.””

I looked up.

“That's what bothers you?””

He turned.

“What?””

“Not that you forged my signature. Not that you arranged thousands of dollars in charges without telling me. Not that you lied to your mother about who was paying. You're upset because you look like an idiot.””

His face reddened.

“That's not fair.””

“Then tell me what is fair.””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was Melissa.

He answered.

“What?””

I watched his expression change.

“What do you mean?””

He walked toward the hallway.

“No, don't do that.””

A pause.

Then:

“Melissa, I told you I'd handle it.””

Another pause.

His voice dropped.

“Because Sarah wasn't supposed to find out!””

The room went silent.

Emily looked at me.

I slowly stood.

Daniel turned around.

He realized what he had just said.

“Sarah—”

I stared at him.

“What wasn't I supposed to find out?””

He ended the call.

His face had lost all its color.

Then my phone vibrated.

An email notification appeared.

The sender was Michael, the restaurant manager.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: ADDITIONAL DOCUMENT DISCOVERED*

I opened it.

There was another attachment.

This one wasn't a restaurant invoice.

It was a copy of a document Daniel had submitted to the restaurant's event coordinator.

At the top was the title:

*FAMILY CELEBRATION SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT.*

And underneath my name was a statement that made my blood run cold:

Sarah Thompson has agreed to become the primary financial sponsor for all future Thompson family events, with an estimated annual contribution of $25,000.

I looked at Daniel.

“Twenty-five thousand dollars?””

He didn't move.

I held up the phone.

“Daniel, what exactly did you promise your family using my name?””

His silence lasted several seconds.

Then he whispered:

May you like

“Sarah, there's something you don't know about the money Mom gave me…”

And suddenly, I realized the restaurant bill was only the beginning.
