Chapter 9: The Final Target
Every screen in my office showed the same message.
*PROJECT HAWK: FINAL PHASE ACTIVATED.*
*TARGET LOCATION: LISA BENNETT.*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Michael.
Not Ryan.
The words burned into the monitors like a warning from another life.
My life.
The life everyone had been planning before I even knew there was a plan.
Daniel was the first to react.
“Disconnect everything.””
His voice cut through the silence.
Everyone moved at once.
He pulled cables.
Shut down terminals.
Killed network access.
But the message remained.
Even after the computers went dark.
Because it wasn’t coming from the system.
It was coming from somewhere else.
My phone vibrated.
Once.
Then again.
A message.
From Rachel.
I opened it.
*You have approximately twenty minutes.*
My stomach tightened.
Another message followed.
*After that, they will stop protecting you.*
I stared at the screen.
“They?””
Michael stepped closer.
“Who sent it?””
“Rachel.””
His expression changed.
“What did she say?””
I showed him.
Michael looked furious.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know what this means?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
He hesitated.
Again.
Always hesitation.
I grabbed his arm.
“Michael.””
His eyes met mine.
“The original Project HAWK wasn’t built to find criminals.””
I waited.
“What was it built for?””
His voice lowered.
“To identify the person who could expose them.””
I looked around the room.
The truth was finally coming together.
The system.
The files.
My company.
My marriage.
My entire life.
It was never about my technology.
It was about me.
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because you’re the only person who can unlock the original evidence.””
I froze.
“What evidence?””
He looked toward Ryan.
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Lisa…”
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“Not another secret.””
Ryan swallowed.
“The evidence your father left behind.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
“Alexander Hale.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
The man I never met had somehow controlled my entire life.
“What did he leave?””
Michael answered.
“A record of everyone involved.””
Daniel looked up.
“Names?””
Michael nodded.
“Every person. Every account. Every operation.””
“Where?””
Michael looked at me.
“In your DNA.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“What?””
Ryan stepped forward.
“Your father designed the system around a biological key.””
Daniel frowned.
“Biometric encryption?””
“More advanced.””
Ryan looked at me.
“Your identity is the password.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Michael looked heartbroken.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m not a key.””
Nobody spoke.
“I’m not a project.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m not something people get to build around.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
That was the first time I believed he understood.
“But someone is still trying to use you.””
We moved to a secure location outside the city.
A place Daniel owned for emergency investigations.
No cameras.
No digital connections.
No access points.
For the first time in days, I was somewhere nobody had prepared.
Nobody had designed.
I sat at a wooden table while Daniel reviewed everything.
“We need to understand Rachel’s role.””
I looked at him.
“She admitted it.””
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
Michael nodded.
“Rachel was involved from the beginning.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you let her become my friend?””
His expression broke.
“She was the only person who could keep you safe.””
I stared.
“You mean the only person who could watch me.””
Michael didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
That hurt.
More than anger.
More than betrayal.
Because my brother was finally admitting that everyone had turned my life into a prison.
Even the people who loved me.
Ryan sat quietly across the room.
I noticed.
“You’re unusually quiet.””
He looked at me.
“I’m trying to figure out how to apologize for something that can’t be fixed.””
I almost looked away.
But I didn’t.
“Try.””
Ryan took a breath.
“I was assigned to you.””
The words still hurt.
“I was supposed to get close to you, gain access to your company, and deliver information.””
I waited.
“But then I met you.””
He looked down.
“And you weren’t what they told me.””
“What did they tell you?””
“That you were a tool.””
My jaw tightened.
“And what did you think?””
“That you were a person.””
The answer was simple.
That made it worse.
Ryan continued.
“I should have told you everything.””
“Yes.””
“I should have trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have protected you differently.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you?””
He didn’t answer.
Finally:
“Because I was afraid.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I stared at him.
“You already lost me.””
Ryan nodded.
“I know.””
At 4:42 a.m., Daniel found the final connection.
He called everyone into the room.
“We found Rachel.””
My heart tightened.
“Where?””
Daniel turned the screen.
A location.
An abandoned military facility.
Michael looked at it.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
“That’s where everything started.””
Ryan stood.
“We have to go.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Rachel isn’t running.””
Michael nodded.
“She’s finishing something.””
The facility was abandoned.
At least according to official records.
But when we arrived, the lights were on.
Someone was expecting us.
Inside, the walls were covered with files.
Photographs.
Documents.
Names.
My name appeared everywhere.
I felt sick.
A timeline stretched across one wall.
My birth.
My adoption.
My education.
My company.
My marriage.
Everything.
A life planned by strangers.
Then I saw something that stopped me.
A photograph.
Rachel.
Standing beside Alexander Hale.
Decades ago.
Michael walked beside me.
“She knew him.””
I stared.
“She wasn’t just part of Project HAWK.””
Michael nodded.
“She helped create it.””
A voice came from the speakers.
Rachel.
“Good.””
We all froze.
“You finally understand.””
I looked around.
“Rachel!””
No answer.
Only her voice.
“Lisa, I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
“But I need you to understand.””
The lights flickered.
“I was never trying to destroy your life.””
A screen turned on.
A video appeared.
Rachel.
Younger.
Working beside Alexander Hale.
“Your father discovered something dangerous.””
The video continued.
“He discovered that the people funding the network had infiltrated every organization they touched.””
Daniel watched closely.
“So he created Project HAWK.””
Rachel’s voice continued.
“Not as a weapon.””
The screen changed.
A picture of a baby.
Me.
“As a safeguard.””
I felt cold.
“He knew he wouldn’t survive.””
Michael looked away.
“He created a backup plan.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“And that backup plan was you.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Rachel.””
The video stopped.
Then she appeared live.
Standing in another room.
Older.
Tired.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I had to make you hate me.””
The door behind her opened.
Someone walked in.
A man.
Older.
But familiar.
My blood froze.
Because I recognized him from the photographs.
Alexander Hale.
Impossible.
Dead for decades.
Rachel looked at me.
And whispered:
“Lisa, meet your father.””
I couldn’t speak.
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Not lovingly.
Like someone seeing an experiment succeed.
“Hello, daughter.””
The room went silent.
Michael stepped forward.
“You’re alive.””
Alexander ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“I’ve waited a long time.””
I stared at the man who had controlled my life from the shadows.
The man whose name was on my birth certificate.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
“Why?””
His smile faded.
“Because tomorrow, the world learns the truth.””
I looked at Rachel.
At Michael.
At Ryan.
Then back at Alexander.
“What truth?””
Alexander stepped closer to the camera.
“The truth that Project HAWK was never designed to protect you.””
A pause.
“It was designed to activate you.””
My heart stopped.
The lights went dark.
And when they came back on, Alexander was gone.
But one final message appeared on every screen.
